Elijah Taken Up to Heaven

1  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), בְּהַעֲל֤וֹת (at taking up) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah) בַּֽסְעָרָ֖ה (by a whirlwind) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (into the heavens), וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ (that went) אֵלִיָּ֛הוּ (Elijah) וֶאֱלִישָׁ֖ע (and Elisha) מִן־ (from) הַגִּלְגָּֽל׃ (Gilgal). 2  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ (Elijah) אֶל־ (to) אֱלִישָׁ֜ע (Elisha), שֵֽׁב־ (Stay) נָ֣א (please) פֹ֗ה (here), כִּ֤י (for) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) שְׁלָחַ֣נִי (has sent me) עַד־ (as far as) בֵּֽית־ (to Beth-) אֵ֔ל (el).

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (Elisha), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) וְחֵֽי־ (and as lives) נַפְשְׁךָ֖ (your soul), אִם־ (not) אֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ (I will leave you).

וַיֵּרְד֖וּ (And they went down) בֵּֽית־ (to Beth-) אֵֽל׃ (el).

3  וַיֵּצְא֨וּ (And came out) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) הַנְּבִיאִ֥ים (of the prophets) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) בֵּֽית־ (at Beth-) אֵל֮ (el) אֶל־ (to) אֱלִישָׁע֒ (Elisha) וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (and said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), הֲיָדַ֕עְתָּ (Do you know) כִּ֣י (that) הַיּ֗וֹם (today) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לֹקֵ֥חַ (will take away) אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנֶ֖יךָ (your master) מֵעַ֣ל (from over) רֹאשֶׁ֑ךָ (your head)?

וַיֹּ֛אמֶר (And he said), גַּם־ (Yes), אֲנִ֥י (I) יָדַ֖עְתִּי (know). הֶחֱשֽׁוּ׃ (Keep silent).

4  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) ל֨וֹ (to him) אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ (Elijah), אֱלִישָׁ֣ע׀ (Elisha), שֵֽׁב־ (stay) נָ֣א (please) פֹ֗ה (here), כִּ֤י (for) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) שְׁלָחַ֣נִי (has sent me) יְרִיח֔וֹ (to Jericho).

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) וְחֵֽי־ (and as lives) נַפְשְׁךָ֖ (your soul), אִם־ (not) אֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ (I will leave you).

וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (And they came) יְרִיחֽוֹ׃ (to Jericho).

5  וַיִּגְּשׁ֨וּ (And came) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) הַנְּבִיאִ֥ים (of the prophets) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) בִּֽירִיחוֹ֮ (at Jericho) אֶל־ (to) אֱלִישָׁע֒ (Elisha), וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (and they said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), הֲיָדַ֕עְתָּ (Do you know) כִּ֣י (that) הַיּ֗וֹם (today) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לֹקֵ֥חַ (will take away) אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנֶ֖יךָ (your master) מֵעַ֣ל (from over) רֹאשֶׁ֑ךָ (your head)?

וַיֹּ֛אמֶר (And he answered), גַּם־ (Yes), אֲנִ֥י (I) יָדַ֖עְתִּי (know). הֶחֱשֽׁוּ׃ (Keep silent).

6  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) ל֨וֹ (to him) אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ (Elijah), שֵֽׁב־ (Stay) נָ֣א (please) פֹ֗ה (here), כִּ֤י (for) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) שְׁלָחַ֣נִי (has sent me) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔נָה (to the Jordan).

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) וְחֵֽי־ (and as lives) נַפְשְׁךָ֖ (your soul), אִם־ (not) אֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ (I will leave you).

וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ (And went on) שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃ (the two of them).

7  וַחֲמִשִּׁ֨ים (And fifty) אִ֜ישׁ (men) מִבְּנֵ֤י (of the sons) הַנְּבִיאִים֙ (of the prophets) הָֽלְכ֔וּ (went), וַיַּעַמְד֥וּ (and stood) מִנֶּ֖גֶד (facing them) מֵרָח֑וֹק (at a distance), וּשְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם (and the two of them) עָמְד֥וּ (stood) עַל־ (by) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (the Jordan). 8  וַיִּקַּח֩ (And took) אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ (Elijah) אֶת־ (-) אַדַּרְתּ֤וֹ (his cloak), וַיִּגְלֹם֙ (and rolled it up), וַיַּכֶּ֣ה (and he struck) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּ֔יִם (the waters), וַיֵּחָצ֖וּ (and they were divided) הֵ֣נָּה (here) וָהֵ֑נָּה (and here), וַיַּעַבְר֥וּ (and passed over) שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם (the two of them) בֶּחָרָבָֽה׃ (on the dry ground).

9  וַיְהִ֣י (And so it was) כְעָבְרָ֗ם (at their passing over), וְאֵ֨לִיָּ֜הוּ (that Elijah) אָמַ֤ר (said) אֶל־ (to) אֱלִישָׁע֙ (Elisha), שְׁאַל֙ (Ask) מָ֣ה (what) אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ (may I do) לָּ֔ךְ (for you) בְּטֶ֖רֶם (before) אֶלָּקַ֣ח (I am taken away) מֵעִמָּ֑ךְ (from you).

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (Elisha), וִֽיהִי־ (And let be) נָ֛א (please) פִּֽי־ (a portion) שְׁנַ֥יִם (double) בְּרוּחֲךָ֖ (of your spirit) אֵלָֽי׃ (upon me).

10  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), הִקְשִׁ֣יתָ (You have made it difficult) לִשְׁא֑וֹל (by asking). אִם־ (If) תִּרְאֶ֨ה (you see) אֹתִ֜י (me) לֻקָּ֤ח (taken) מֵֽאִתָּךְ֙ (from you), יְהִֽי־ (it will be) לְךָ֣ (for you) כֵ֔ן (so). וְאִם־ (But if) אַ֖יִן (not), לֹ֥א (not) יִהְיֶֽה׃ (it will be).

11  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), הֵ֣מָּה (as they) הֹלְכִ֤ים (were walking), הָלוֹךְ֙ (walking on) וְדַבֵּ֔ר (and speaking), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (that behold) רֶֽכֶב־ (a chariot) אֵשׁ֙ (of fire), וְס֣וּסֵי (and horses) אֵ֔שׁ (of fire), וַיַּפְרִ֖דוּ (and they separated) בֵּ֣ין (between) שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם (the two of them), וַיַּ֙עַל֙ (and went up) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah) בַּֽסְעָרָ֖ה (in the whirlwind) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (into the heavens).

12  וֶאֱלִישָׁ֣ע (And Elisha) רֹאֶ֗ה (saw it), וְה֤וּא (and he) מְצַעֵק֙ (cried out), אָבִ֣י׀ (My father), אָבִ֗י (my father), רֶ֤כֶב (the chariot) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) וּפָ֣רָשָׁ֔יו (and its horsemen), וְלֹ֥א (and not) רָאָ֖הוּ (he saw him) ע֑וֹד (anymore). וַֽיַּחֲזֵק֙ (And he took hold) בִּבְגָדָ֔יו (of his own clothes) וַיִּקְרָעֵ֖ם (and tore them) לִשְׁנַ֥יִם (into two) קְרָעִֽים׃ (pieces).

13  וַיָּ֙רֶם֙ (And He took up) אֶת־ (-) אַדֶּ֣רֶת (the cloak) אֵלִיָּ֔הוּ (of Elijah) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָפְלָ֖ה (had fallen) מֵעָלָ֑יו (from him), וַיָּ֥שָׁב (and he returned) וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד (and stood) עַל־ (by) שְׂפַ֥ת (the bank) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (of the Jordan). 14  וַיִּקַּח֩ (And he took) אֶת־ (-) אַדֶּ֨רֶת (the cloak) אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ (of Elijah) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָפְלָ֤ה (had fallen) מֵֽעָלָיו֙ (from him) וַיַּכֶּ֣ה (and struck) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּ֔יִם (the waters), וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (and he said), אַיֵּ֕ה (Where is) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ (of Elijah)— אַף־ (even) ה֣וּא׀ (he)?

וַיַּכֶּ֣ה (And he struck) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּ֗יִם (the waters), וַיֵּֽחָצוּ֙ (and they were divided) הֵ֣נָּה (here) וָהֵ֔נָּה (and here). וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֖ר (And passed over) אֱלִישָֽׁע׃ (Elisha).

Elisha Succeeds Elijah

15  וַיִּרְאֻ֨הוּ (And saw him) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) הַנְּבִיאִ֤ים (of the prophets) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) בִּֽירִיחוֹ֙ (from Jericho) מִנֶּ֔גֶד (facing him), וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and they said), נָ֛חָה (Rests) ר֥וּחַ (the spirit) אֵלִיָּ֖הוּ (of Elijah) עַל־ (on) אֱלִישָׁ֑ע (Elisha). וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (And they came) לִקְרָאת֔וֹ (to meet him) וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ־ (and bowed) ל֖וֹ (before him) אָֽרְצָה׃ (to the ground).

16  וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said) אֵלָ֡יו (to him), הִנֵּה־ (Behold) נָ֣א (now), יֵֽשׁ־ (there are) אֶת־ (with) עֲבָדֶיךָ֩ (your servants) חֲמִשִּׁ֨ים (fifty) אֲנָשִׁ֜ים (men), בְּנֵֽי־ (sons) חַ֗יִל (of valor). יֵ֣לְכוּ (Let them go) נָא֮ (please) וִיבַקְשׁ֣וּ (and search for) אֶת־ (-) אֲדֹנֶיךָ֒ (your master), פֶּן־ (lest) נְשָׂאוֹ֙ (has taken him up) ר֣וּחַ (the Spirit) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) וַיַּשְׁלִכֵ֙הוּ֙ (and cast him) בְּאַחַ֣ד (upon one) הֶהָרִ֔ים (of the mountains), א֖וֹ (or) בְּאַחַ֣ת (into one) הַגְּיָאוֹת (of the valleys).

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), לֹ֥א (Not) תִשְׁלָֽחוּ׃ (you⁺ shall send anyone).

17  וַיִּפְצְרוּ־ (And they urged) ב֥וֹ (him) עַד־ (until) בֹּ֖שׁ (he was ashamed), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said), שְׁלָ֑חוּ (Send them).

וַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ (And they sent) חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים (fifty) אִ֔ישׁ (men), וַיְבַקְשׁ֥וּ (and they searched for) שְׁלֹשָֽׁה־ (three) יָמִ֖ים (days), וְלֹ֥א (not) מְצָאֻֽהוּ׃ (did they find him).

18  וַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּ (And they came back) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), וְה֖וּא (and for he) יֹשֵׁ֣ב (had stayed) בִּירִיח֑וֹ (in Jericho). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), הֲלֽוֹא־ (Did not) אָמַ֥רְתִּי (I say) אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) אַל־ (not) תֵּלֵֽכוּ׃ (to go)?

Elisha Heals the Waters of Jericho

19  וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ (And said) אַנְשֵׁ֤י (the men) הָעִיר֙ (of the city) אֶל־ (to) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (Elisha), הִנֵּה־ (Behold) נָ֞א (please), מוֹשַׁ֤ב (the site) הָעִיר֙ (of the city) ט֔וֹב (is good), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) אֲדֹנִ֖י (my lord) רֹאֶ֑ה (sees). וְהַמַּ֥יִם (And the waters) רָעִ֖ים (are bad) וְהָאָ֥רֶץ (and the ground) מְשַׁכָּֽלֶת׃ (barren).

20  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), קְחוּ־ (Bring) לִי֙ (me) צְלֹחִ֣ית (a bowl) חֲדָשָׁ֔ה (new) וְשִׂ֥ימוּ (and put) שָׁ֖ם (in it) מֶ֑לַח (salt).

וַיִּקְח֖וּ (And they brought it) אֵלָֽיו׃ (to him). 21  וַיֵּצֵא֙ (And he went out) אֶל־ (to) מוֹצָ֣א (the source) הַמַּ֔יִם (of the waters), וַיַּשְׁלֶךְ־ (and he cast) שָׁ֖ם (in there) מֶ֑לַח (the salt), וַיֹּ֜אמֶר (and said), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), רִפִּ֙אתִי֙ (I have healed) לַמַּ֣יִם (the waters) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these). לֹֽא־ (Not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there shall be) מִשָּׁ֛ם (from there) ע֖וֹד (anymore) מָ֥וֶת (death) וּמְשַׁכָּֽלֶת׃ (or barrenness).

22  וַיֵּרָפ֣וּ (And were healed) הַמַּ֔יִם (the waters) עַ֖ד (up to) הַיּ֣וֹם (day) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), כִּדְבַ֥ר (according to the word) אֱלִישָׁ֖ע (of Elisha) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבֵּֽר׃פ (he spoke).

Elisha Mocked

23  וַיַּ֥עַל (And he went up) מִשָּׁ֖ם (from there) בֵּֽית־ (to Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el), וְה֣וּא׀ (and he) עֹלֶ֣ה (was going up) בַדֶּ֗רֶךְ (the road), וּנְעָרִ֤ים (and some youths) קְטַנִּים֙ (little) יָצְא֣וּ (came) מִן־ (from) הָעִ֔יר (the city) וַיִּתְקַלְּסוּ־ (and mocked) בוֹ֙ (him) וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ (and said) ל֔וֹ (to him), עֲלֵ֥ה (Go up), קֵרֵ֖חַ (baldhead)! עֲלֵ֥ה (Go up), קֵרֵֽחַ׃ (baldhead)!

24  וַיִּ֤פֶן (And he turned) אַֽחֲרָיו֙ (around) וַיִּרְאֵ֔ם (and looked at them) וַֽיְקַלְלֵ֖ם (and he cursed them) בְּשֵׁ֣ם (in the name) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH).

וַתֵּצֶ֨אנָה (And came) שְׁתַּ֤יִם (two) דֻּבִּים֙ (female bears) מִן־ (out) הַיַּ֔עַר (of the woods) וַתְּבַקַּ֣עְנָה (and mauled) מֵהֶ֔ם (of them) אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) וּשְׁנֵ֖י (and two) יְלָדִֽים׃ (youths).

25  וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And he went) מִשָּׁ֖ם (from there) אֶל־ (to) הַ֣ר (Mount) הַכַּרְמֶ֑ל (Carmel), וּמִשָּׁ֖ם (and from there) שָׁ֥ב (he returned) שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃פ (to Samaria).
