Ahab and the False Prophets
(2 Chronicles 18:1–11)

1  וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ (And they dwelt) שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (three) שָׁנִ֑ים (years) אֵ֚ין (without) מִלְחָמָ֔ה (war) בֵּ֥ין (between) אֲרָ֖ם (Aram) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (Israel).

2  וַיְהִ֖י (And it came to pass) בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (in the year) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑ית (third) וַיֵּ֛רֶד (that went down) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט (Jehoshaphat) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) אֶל־ (to) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 3  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) עֲבָדָ֔יו (his servants), הַיְדַעְתֶּ֕ם (Have you⁺ not known) כִּֽי־ (that) לָ֖נוּ (is unto us) רָמֹ֣ת (Ramoth-) גִּלְעָ֑ד (gilead), וַאֲנַ֣חְנוּ (and we) מַחְשִׁ֔ים (are keeping silent) מִקַּ֣חַת (from taking) אֹתָ֔הּ (it) מִיַּ֖ד (out of the hand) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) אֲרָֽם׃ (of Aram)?

4  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said) אֶל־ (to) יְה֣וֹשָׁפָ֔ט (Jehoshaphat), הֲתֵלֵ֥ךְ (Will you go) אִתִּ֛י (with me) לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to fight) רָמֹ֣ת (at Ramoth-)

גִּלְעָ֑ד (gilead)? וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהֽוֹשָׁפָט֙ (Jehoshaphat) אֶל־ (to) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), כָּמ֧וֹנִי (Like me) כָמ֛וֹךָ (like you), כְּעַמִּ֥י (like my people) כְעַמֶּ֖ךָ (like your people), כְּסוּסַ֥י (like my horses) כְּסוּסֶֽיךָ׃ (like your horses).

5  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (Jehoshaphat) אֶל־ (to) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), דְּרָשׁ־ (Seek) נָ֥א (please) כַיּ֖וֹם (today) אֶת־ (for) דְּבַ֥ר (the word) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

6  וַיִּקְבֹּ֨ץ (And gathered together) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (of Israel) אֶֽת־ (-) הַנְּבִיאִים֮ (the prophets), כְּאַרְבַּ֣ע (about four) מֵא֣וֹת (hundred) אִישׁ֒ (men), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them), הַאֵלֵ֞ךְ (Shall I go) עַל־ (against) רָמֹ֥ת (Ramoth-) גִּלְעָ֛ד (gilead) לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to fight), אִם־ (or) אֶחְדָּ֑ל (shall I refrain)?

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said), עֲלֵ֔ה (Go up), וְיִתֵּ֥ן (and will deliver it) אֲדֹנָ֖י (the Lord) בְּיַ֥ד (into the hand) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

7  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) יְה֣וֹשָׁפָ֔ט (Jehoshaphat), הַאֵ֨ין (Is there not) פֹּ֥ה (here) נָבִ֛יא (a prophet) לַיהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) ע֑וֹד (still), וְנִדְרְשָׁ֖ה (that we may inquire) מֵאוֹתֽוֹ׃ (of Him).

8  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל׀ (of Israel) אֶֽל־ (to) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֡ט (Jehoshaphat), ע֣וֹד (There is still) אִישׁ־ (man) אֶחָ֡ד (one) לִדְרֹשׁ֩ (to seek) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH) מֵאֹת֜וֹ (by him). וַאֲנִ֣י (And I) שְׂנֵאתִ֗יו (hate him), כִּ֠י (because) לֹֽא־ (not) יִתְנַבֵּ֨א (he does prophesy) עָלַ֥י (concerning me) טוֹב֙ (good), כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (rather) רָ֔ע (evil): מִיכָ֖יְהוּ (Micaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יִמְלָ֑ה (of Imlah).

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) יְה֣וֹשָׁפָ֔ט (Jehoshaphat), אַל־ (Not) יֹאמַ֥ר (let say) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) כֵּֽן׃ (such things).

9  וַיִּקְרָא֙ (And called) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) סָרִ֖יס (eunuch) אֶחָ֑ד (one) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), מַהֲרָ֖ה (Bring quickly) מִיכָ֥יְהוּ (Micaiah) בֶן־ (son) יִמְלָֽה׃ (of Imlah).

10  וּמֶ֣לֶךְ (And the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל (of Israel) וִֽיהוֹשָׁפָ֣ט (and Jehoshaphat) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֡ה (of Judah) יֹשְׁבִים֩ (were sitting) אִ֨ישׁ (each) עַל־ (on) כִּסְא֜וֹ (his throne), מְלֻבָּשִׁ֤ים (clothed) בְּגָדִים֙ (with garments), בְּגֹ֔רֶן (by the threshing floor) פֶּ֖תַח (at the entrance) שַׁ֣עַר (of the gate) שֹׁמְר֑וֹן (of Samaria). וְכָ֨ל־ (And all) הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים (the prophets) מִֽתְנַבְּאִ֖ים (prophesied) לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ (before them).

11  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And had made) ל֛וֹ (for himself) צִדְקִיָּ֥ה (Zedekiah) בֶֽן־ (son) כְּנַעֲנָ֖ה (of Chenaanah) קַרְנֵ֣י (horns) בַרְזֶ֑ל (of iron), וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and he said), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH): בְּאֵ֛לֶּה (With these) תְּנַגַּ֥ח (you shall gore) אֶת־ (-) אֲרָ֖ם (Aram) עַד־ (until) כַּלֹּתָֽם׃ (they are consumed).

12  וְכָל־ (And all) הַנְּבִאִ֔ים (the prophets) נִבְּאִ֥ים (prophesied) כֵּ֖ן (they are consumed), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), עֲלֵ֞ה (Go up) רָמֹ֤ת (to Ramoth-) גִּלְעָד֙ (gilead) וְהַצְלַ֔ח (and prosper), וְנָתַ֥ן (and will deliver it) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּיַ֥ד (into the hand) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

Micaiah Prophesies against Ahab
(2 Chronicles 18:12–27)

13  וְהַמַּלְאָ֞ךְ (And the messenger) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הָלַ֣ךְ׀ (had gone) לִקְרֹ֣א (to call) מִיכָ֗יְהוּ (Micaiah) דִּבֶּ֤ר (spoke) אֵלָיו֙ (to him), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הִנֵּה־ (Behold) נָ֞א (please), דִּבְרֵ֧י (the words) הַנְּבִיאִ֛ים (of the prophets) פֶּֽה־ (with accord) אֶחָ֥ד (one) ט֖וֹב (are good) אֶל־ (unto) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king). יְהִֽי־ (Let be) נָ֣א (please) דִבְרֶיךָ (your word) כִּדְבַ֛ר (like the word) אַחַ֥ד (of one) מֵהֶ֖ם (of them), וְדִבַּ֥רְתָּ (and speak) טּֽוֹב׃ (good).

14  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And said) מִיכָ֑יְהוּ (Micaiah), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֕ה (YHWH) כִּ֠י (surely) אֶת־ (-) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that which) יֹאמַ֧ר (says) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֖י (to me), אֹת֥וֹ (that) אֲדַבֵּֽר׃ (I will speak).

15  וַיָּבוֹא֮ (And he came) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ (the king). וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), מִיכָ֙יְהוּ֙ (Micaiah), הֲנֵלֵ֞ךְ (shall we go) אֶל־ (against) רָמֹ֥ת (Ramoth-) גִּלְעָ֛ד (gilead) לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (to war), אִם־ (or) נֶחְדָּ֑ל (shall we refrain)?

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And he answered) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) עֲלֵ֣ה (Go up) וְהַצְלַ֔ח (and prosper), וְנָתַ֥ן (and for will deliver it) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּיַ֥ד (into the hand) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king).

16  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), עַד־ (Up to) כַּמֶּ֥ה (how many) פְעָמִ֖ים (times) אֲנִ֣י (I) מַשְׁבִּעֶ֑ךָ (shall make you swear) אֲ֠שֶׁר (that) לֹֽא־ (nothing) תְדַבֵּ֥ר (you speak) אֵלַ֛י (to me), רַק־ (but) אֱמֶ֖ת (the truth) בְּשֵׁ֥ם (in the name) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH)?

17  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said),

רָאִ֤יתִי (I saw) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) נְפֹצִ֣ים (scattered) אֶל־ (on) הֶהָרִ֔ים (the mountains),

כַּצֹּ֕אן (like the sheep) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אֵין־ (not) לָהֶ֖ם (have) רֹעֶ֑ה (a shepherd).

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), לֹֽא־ (No) אֲדֹנִ֣ים (master) לָאֵ֔לֶּה (these have);

יָשׁ֥וּבוּ (let them return) אִישׁ־ (a man) לְבֵית֖וֹ (to his house) בְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃ (in peace).

18  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט (Jehoshaphat), הֲלוֹא֙ (Did not) אָמַ֣רְתִּי (I say) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you) לֽוֹא־ (that not) יִתְנַבֵּ֥א (he would prophesy) עָלַ֛י (concerning me) ט֖וֹב (good), כִּ֥י (but) אִם־ (rather) רָֽע׃ (evil)?

19  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), לָכֵ֖ן (Therefore) שְׁמַ֣ע (hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). רָאִ֤יתִי (I saw) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) יֹשֵׁ֣ב (sitting) עַל־ (on) כִּסְא֔וֹ (His throne), וְכָל־ (and all) צְבָ֤א (the host) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (of the heavens) עֹמֵ֣ד (standing) עָלָ֔יו (beside him) מִימִינ֖וֹ (on His right) וּמִשְּׂמֹאלֽוֹ׃ (and on His left).

20  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), מִ֤י (Who) יְפַתֶּה֙ (will persuade) אֶת־ (-) אַחְאָ֔ב (Ahab) וְיַ֕עַל (and to go up), וְיִפֹּ֖ל (that he may fall) בְּרָמֹ֣ת (at Ramoth-) גִּלְעָ֑ד (gilead)?

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And spoke) זֶה֙ (this one) בְּכֹ֔ה (thus), וְזֶ֥ה (and this one) אֹמֵ֖ר (spoke) בְּכֹֽה׃ (thus).

21  וַיֵּצֵ֣א (And came forward) הָר֗וּחַ (a spirit) וַֽיַּעֲמֹד֙ (and stood) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and said), אֲנִ֣י (I) אֲפַתֶּ֑נּוּ (will persuade him).

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) בַּמָּֽה׃ (By what)?

22  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said) אֵצֵא֙ (I will go) וְהָיִ֙יתִי֙ (and be) ר֣וּחַ (a spirit) שֶׁ֔קֶר (lying) בְּפִ֖י (in the mouth) כָּל־ (of all) נְבִיאָ֑יו (his prophets).

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And He said), תְּפַתֶּה֙ (Entice him) וְגַם־ (and also) תּוּכָ֔ל (you will prevail). צֵ֖א (Go) וַעֲשֵׂה־ (and do) כֵֽן׃ (so).

23  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) הִנֵּ֨ה (behold), נָתַ֤ן (has put) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) ר֣וּחַ (a spirit) שֶׁ֔קֶר (lying) בְּפִ֖י (in the mouth) כָּל־ (of all) נְבִיאֶ֣יךָ (prophets of yours) אֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַֽיהוָ֔ה (and YHWH) דִּבֶּ֥ר (has declared) עָלֶ֖יךָ (against you) רָעָֽה׃ (disaster).

24  וַיִּגַּשׁ֙ (And went near) צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Zedekiah) בֶֽן־ (son) כְּנַעֲנָ֔ה (of Chenaanah), וַיַּכֶּ֥ה (and he struck) אֶת־ (-) מִיכָ֖יְהוּ (Micaiah) עַל־ (on) הַלֶּ֑חִי (the cheek), וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), אֵי־ (Where) זֶ֨ה (is this that) עָבַ֧ר (has passed over) רֽוּחַ־ (the spirit) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) מֵאִתִּ֖י (from me) לְדַבֵּ֥ר (to speak) אוֹתָֽךְ׃ (with you)?

25  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מִיכָ֔יְהוּ (Micaiah), הִנְּךָ֥ (Behold), רֹאֶ֖ה (you shall see) בַּיּ֣וֹם (on day) הַה֑וּא (that), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (when) תָּבֹ֛א (you go into) חֶ֥דֶר (a chamber) בְּחֶ֖דֶר (of a chamber) לְהֵחָבֵֽה׃ (to hide).

26  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), קַ֚ח (Take) אֶת־ (-) מִיכָ֔יְהוּ (Micaiah) וַהֲשִׁיבֵ֖הוּ (and return him) אֶל־ (to) אָמֹ֣ן (Amon) שַׂר־ (the governor) הָעִ֑יר (of the city) וְאֶל־ (and to) יוֹאָ֖שׁ (Joash) בֶּן־ (son) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (of the king). 27  וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ (And say), כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king): שִׂ֥ימוּ (Put) אֶת־ (-) זֶ֖ה (this one) בֵּ֣ית (in the house) הַכֶּ֑לֶא (of restraint), וְהַאֲכִילֻ֨הוּ (and feed him) לֶ֤חֶם (with bread) לַ֙חַץ֙ (of affliction) וּמַ֣יִם (and water) לַ֔חַץ (of affliction), עַ֖ד (until) בֹּאִ֥י (I come) בְשָׁלֽוֹם׃ (in peace).

28  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מִיכָ֔יְהוּ (Micaiah), אִם־ (If) שׁ֤וֹב (returning) תָּשׁוּב֙ (you return) בְּשָׁל֔וֹם (in peace), לֹֽא־ (not) דִבֶּ֥ר (has spoken) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בִּ֑י (by me). וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), שִׁמְע֖וּ (Take heed), עַמִּ֥ים (peoples), כֻּלָּֽם׃ (all of them).

Ahab’s Defeat and Death
(2 Chronicles 18:28–34)

29  וַיַּ֧עַל (And went up) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) וְיהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט (and Jehoshaphat) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) רָמֹ֥ת (to Ramoth-) גִּלְעָֽד׃ (gilead). 30  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) מֶ֨לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֗ט (Jehoshaphat), הִתְחַפֵּשׂ֙ (I will disguise myself) וָבֹ֣א (and come) בַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (into the battle), וְאַתָּ֖ה (and you) לְבַ֣שׁ (put on) בְּגָדֶ֑יךָ (your robes). וַיִּתְחַפֵּשׂ֙ (And disguised himself) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַיָּב֖וֹא (and went) בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (into the battle).

31  וּמֶ֣לֶךְ (And the king) אֲרָ֡ם (of Aram) צִוָּ֣ה (had commanded) אֶת־ (-) שָׂרֵי֩ (the captains) הָרֶ֨כֶב (of the chariots), אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) ל֜וֹ (unto him) שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (thirty) וּשְׁנַ֙יִם֙ (and two), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), לֹ֚א (Not) תִּלָּ֣חֲמ֔וּ (shall you⁺ fight) אֶת־ (with) קָטֹ֖ן (small) וְאֶת־ (or with) גָּד֑וֹל (great), כִּ֛י (except) אִֽם־ (but) אֶת־ (with) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) לְבַדּֽוֹ׃ (by himself).

32  וַיְהִ֡י (And it came to pass), כִּרְאוֹת֩ (seeing) שָׂרֵ֨י (the commanders) הָרֶ֜כֶב (of the chariots) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֗ט (Jehoshaphat), וְהֵ֤מָּה (that they) אָֽמְרוּ֙ (said), אַ֣ךְ (Surely) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל (of Israel) ה֔וּא (it is). וַיָּסֻ֥רוּ (And they turned aside) עָלָ֖יו (against him) לְהִלָּחֵ֑ם (to fight), וַיִּזְעַ֖ק (and cried out) יְהוֹשָׁפָֽט׃ (Jehoshaphat). 33  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), כִּרְאוֹת֙ (seeing) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הָרֶ֔כֶב (of the chariots) כִּֽי־ (that) לֹא־ (not) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) ה֑וּא (it was), וַיָּשׁ֖וּבוּ (that they turned back) מֵאַחֲרָֽיו׃ (from pursuing him).

34  וְאִ֗ישׁ (And a man) מָשַׁ֤ךְ (drew) בַּקֶּ֙שֶׁת֙ (with the bow) לְתֻמּ֔וֹ (in his simplicity), וַיַּכֶּה֙ (and he struck) אֶת־ (-) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בֵּ֥ין (between) הַדְּבָקִ֖ים (the joints) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) הַשִּׁרְיָ֑ן (of armor). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) לְרַכָּב֗וֹ (to the driver of his chariot), הֲפֹ֥ךְ (Turn) יָדְךָ֛ (your hand) וְהוֹצִיאֵ֥נִי (and take me out) מִן־ (of) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה (the battle); כִּ֥י (for) הָחֳלֵֽיתִי׃ (I am wounded).

35  וַתַּעֲלֶ֤ה (And increased) הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ (the battle) בַּיּ֣וֹם (day) הַה֔וּא (that), וְהַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (and the king) הָיָ֧ה (was) מָעֳמָ֛ד (propped up) בַּמֶּרְכָּבָ֖ה (in the chariot) נֹ֣כַח (over against) אֲרָ֑ם (Aram). וַיָּ֣מָת (And he died) בָּעֶ֔רֶב (in the evening), וַיִּ֥צֶק (and ran out) דַּֽם־ (the blood from) הַמַּכָּ֖ה (the wound) אֶל־ (onto) חֵ֥יק (the floor) הָרָֽכֶב׃ (of the chariot). 36  וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר (And went) הָרִנָּה֙ (a shout) בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה (throughout the army) כְּבֹ֥א (at the going in) הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ (of the sun), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying),

אִ֥ישׁ (Each man) אֶל־ (to) עִיר֖וֹ (his city),

וְאִ֥ישׁ (and each man) אֶל־ (to) אַרְצֽוֹ׃ (his own land).

37  וַיָּ֣מָת (And died) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) וַיָּב֖וֹא (and was brought) שֹׁמְר֑וֹן (to Samaria), וַיִּקְבְּר֥וּ (and they buried) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (in Samaria). 38  וַיִּשְׁטֹ֨ף (And one washed) אֶת־ (-) הָרֶ֜כֶב (the chariot) עַ֣ל׀ (at) בְּרֵכַ֣ת (a pool in) שֹׁמְר֗וֹן (Samaria). וַיָּלֹ֤קּוּ (And licked up) הַכְּלָבִים֙ (the dogs) אֶת־ (-) דָּמ֔וֹ (his blood), וְהַזֹּנ֖וֹת (and the prostitutes) רָחָ֑צוּ (bathed), כִּדְבַ֥ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבֵּֽר׃ (He had spoken).

39  וְיֶתֶר֩ (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֨י (of the acts) אַחְאָ֜ב (of Ahab), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֗ה (he did), וּבֵ֤ית (and house) הַשֵּׁן֙ (the ivory) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּנָ֔ה (he built), וְכָל־ (and all) הֶעָרִ֖ים (the cities) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּנָ֑ה (he built), הֲלֽוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (are written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel)?

40  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (And rested) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֑יו (his fathers). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אֲחַזְיָ֥הוּ (Ahaziah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah

41  וִיהֽוֹשָׁפָט֙ (And Jehoshaphat) בֶּן־ (son) אָסָ֔א (of Asa) מָלַ֖ךְ (became king) עַל־ (over) יְהוּדָ֑ה (Judah) בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (in the year) אַרְבַּ֔ע (fourth) לְאַחְאָ֖ב (of Ahab) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 42  יְהוֹשָׁפָ֗ט (Jehoshaphat) בֶּן־ (was a son) שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים (of thirty) וְחָמֵ֤שׁ (and five) שָׁנָה֙ (years) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְעֶשְׂרִ֤ים (and twenty) וְחָמֵשׁ֙ (and five) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) עֲזוּבָ֖ה (was Azubah) בַּת־ (the daughter) שִׁלְחִֽי׃ (of Shilhi).

43  וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ (And he walked) בְּכָל־ (in all) דֶּ֛רֶךְ (the ways) אָסָ֥א (of Asa) אָבִ֖יו (his father); לֹא־ (not) סָ֣ר (He did turn aside) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (from them), לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (doing) הַיָּשָׁ֖ר (the right) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

אַ֥ךְ (Nevertheless) הַבָּמ֖וֹת (the high places) לֹֽא־ (not) סָ֑רוּ (they did remove); ע֥וֹד (still) הָעָ֛ם (the people) מְזַבְּחִ֥ים (offered sacrifices) וּֽמְקַטְּרִ֖ים (and burned incense) בַּבָּמֽוֹת׃ (on the high places). 44  וַיַּשְׁלֵ֥ם (And made peace) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (Jehoshaphat) עִם־ (with) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

45  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֧י (of the acts) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט (of Jehoshaphat), וּגְבוּרָת֥וֹ (and the might) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he showed), וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and how) נִלְחָ֑ם (he made war), הֲלֹֽא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)? 46  וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ (And the rest) הַקָּדֵ֔שׁ (of the male shrine prostitutes), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) נִשְׁאַ֔ר (remained) בִּימֵ֖י (from the days) אָסָ֣א (of Asa) אָבִ֑יו (his father), בִּעֵ֖ר (he banished) מִן־ (from) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the land). 47  וּמֶ֥לֶךְ (And a king) אֵ֛ין (was not) בֶּאֱד֖וֹם (in Edom); נִצָּ֥ב (he set up) מֶֽלֶךְ׃ (a king).

48  יְהוֹשָׁפָ֡ט (Jehoshaphat) עָשָׂר (made) אֳנִיּ֨וֹת (ships) תַּרְשִׁ֜ישׁ (of Tarshish) לָלֶ֧כֶת (to go) אוֹפִ֛ירָה (to Ophir) לַזָּהָ֖ב (for the gold), וְלֹ֣א (not) הָלָ֑ךְ (they sailed), כִּֽי־ (for) נִשְׁבְּרָה (were wrecked) אֳנִיּ֖וֹת (the ships) בְּעֶצְי֥וֹן (at Ezion-) גָּֽבֶר׃ (geber). 49  אָ֠ז (Then) אָמַ֞ר (said) אֲחַזְיָ֤הוּ (Ahaziah) בֶן־ (son) אַחְאָב֙ (of Ahab) אֶל־ (to) יְה֣וֹשָׁפָ֔ט (Jehoshaphat), יֵלְכ֧וּ (Let go) עֲבָדַ֛י (my servants) עִם־ (with) עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ (your servants) בָּאֳנִיּ֑וֹת (in the ships). וְלֹ֥א (Not) אָבָ֖ה (was willing) יְהוֹשָׁפָֽט׃ (Jehoshaphat).

50  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) יְהֽוֹשָׁפָט֙ (Jehoshaphat) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵר֙ (and was buried) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) בְּעִ֖יר (in the City) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) אָבִ֑יו (his father). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) יְהוֹרָ֥ם (Joram) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ס (in his place).

Ahaziah Reigns in Israel

51  אֲחַזְיָ֣הוּ (Ahaziah) בֶן־ (son) אַחְאָ֗ב (of Ahab) מָלַ֤ךְ (became king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (in Samaria) בִּשְׁנַת֙ (in the year) שְׁבַ֣ע (seven) עֶשְׂרֵ֔ה (and tenth) לִיהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (of Jehoshaphat) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah). וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ (And he reigned) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) שְׁנָתָֽיִם׃ (two years). 52  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And He did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ (and walked) בְּדֶ֤רֶךְ (in the way) אָבִיו֙ (of his father), וּבְדֶ֣רֶךְ (and in the way) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother), וּבְדֶ֙רֶךְ֙ (and in the way) יָרָבְעָ֣ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָ֔ט (of Nebat) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הֶחֱטִ֖יא (had caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

53  וַֽיַּעֲבֹד֙ (And for he served) אֶת־ (-) הַבַּ֔עַל (the Baal) וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה (and bowed down) ל֑וֹ (to him) וַיַּכְעֵ֗ס (and provoked to anger) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (had done) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).
