Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery
(2 Chronicles 32:24–31; Isaiah 38:1–8)

1  בַּיָּמִ֣ים (In the days) הָהֵ֔ם (those) חָלָ֥ה (was sick) חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ (Hezekiah) לָמ֑וּת (unto death), וַיָּבֹ֣א (and went) אֵ֠לָיו (to him) יְשַׁעְיָ֨הוּ (Isaiah) בֶן־ (son) אָמ֜וֹץ (of Amoz) הַנָּבִ֗יא (the prophet) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH): צַ֣ו (Set in order) לְבֵיתֶ֔ךָ (your house), כִּ֛י (for) מֵ֥ת (shall die) אַתָּ֖ה (you) וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִֽחְיֶֽה׃ (live).

2  וַיַּסֵּ֥ב (And he turned) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָ֖יו (his face) אֶל־ (toward) הַקִּ֑יר (the wall) וַיִּ֨תְפַּלֵּ֔ל (and prayed) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 3  אָנָּ֣ה (Please), יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), זְכָר־ (remember) נָ֞א (now) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (how) הִתְהַלַּ֣כְתִּי (I have walked) לְפָנֶ֗יךָ (before You) בֶּֽאֱמֶת֙ (in truth) וּבְלֵבָ֣ב (and with a heart) שָׁלֵ֔ם (loyal), וְהַטּ֥וֹב (and good) בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ (in your eyes) עָשִׂ֑יתִי (I have done). וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ (And wept) חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ (Hezekiah) בְּכִ֥י (a weeping) גָדֽוֹל׃ס (great).

4  וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass)— יְשַׁעְיָ֔הוּ (Isaiah) לֹ֣א (not) יָצָ֔א (had gone out) הָעִיר (of the city) הַתִּֽיכֹנָ֑ה (to the middle)— וּדְבַר־ (that the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הָיָ֥ה (came) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 5  שׁ֣וּב (Return), וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ (and say) אֶל־ (to) חִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Hezekiah) נְגִיד־ (the leader) עַמִּ֗י (of My people), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (the God) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) אָבִ֔יךָ (your father): שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ (I have heard) אֶת־ (-) תְּפִלָּתֶ֔ךָ (your prayer); רָאִ֖יתִי (I have seen) אֶת־ (-) דִּמְעָתֶ֑ךָ (your tears). הִנְנִי֙ (Surely) רֹ֣פֶא (I will heal) לָ֔ךְ (you). בַּיּוֹם֙ (On the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י (third) תַּעֲלֶ֖ה (you shall go up) בֵּ֥ית (to the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 6  וְהֹסַפְתִּ֣י (And I will add) עַל־ (to) יָמֶ֗יךָ (your days) חֲמֵ֤שׁ (five) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and ten) שָׁנָ֔ה (years), וּמִכַּ֤ף (and from the hand) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (of the king) אַשּׁוּר֙ (of Assyria) אַצִּ֣ילְךָ֔ (I will snatch you up) וְאֵ֖ת (and) הָעִ֣יר (the city) הַזֹּ֑את (this), וְגַנּוֹתִי֙ (and I will cover) עַל־ (over) הָעִ֣יר (the city) הַזֹּ֔את (this) לְמַֽעֲנִ֔י (for My own sake) וּלְמַ֖עַן (and for the sake) דָּוִ֥ד (of David) עַבְדִּֽי׃ (My servant).

7  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ (Isaiah), קְח֖וּ (Take) דְּבֶ֣לֶת (a cake) תְּאֵנִ֑ים (of figs). וַיִּקְח֛וּ (And they took it) וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ (and laid it) עַֽל־ (on) הַשְּׁחִ֖ין (the boil), וַיֶּֽחִי׃ (and he recovered).

8  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Hezekiah) אֶֽל־ (to) יְשַׁעְיָ֔הוּ (Isaiah), מָ֣ה (What is) א֔וֹת (the sign) כִּֽי־ (that) יִרְפָּ֥א (will heal) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לִ֑י (me), וְעָלִ֛יתִי (that I shall go up) בַּיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י (third) בֵּ֥ית (to the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH)?

9  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְשַׁעְיָ֗הוּ (Isaiah), זֶה־ (This is) לְּךָ֤ (to you) הָאוֹת֙ (the sign) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), כִּ֚י (that) יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (will do) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֖ר (the thing) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבֵּ֑ר (He has spoken): הָלַ֤ךְ (Shall go forward) הַצֵּל֙ (the shadow) עֶ֣שֶׂר (ten) מַֽעֲל֔וֹת (degrees), אִם־ (or) יָשׁ֖וּב (go backward) עֶ֥שֶׂר (ten) מַעֲלֽוֹת׃ (degrees)?

10  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And answered) יְחִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ (Hezekiah), נָקֵ֣ל (It is light) לַצֵּ֔ל (for the shadow) לִנְט֖וֹת (to lengthen) עֶ֣שֶׂר (ten) מַעֲל֑וֹת (degrees). לֹ֣א (No), כִ֔י (but) יָשׁ֥וּב (let go) הַצֵּ֛ל (the shadow) אֲחֹרַנִּ֖ית (backward) עֶ֥שֶׂר (ten) מַעֲלֽוֹת׃ (degrees).

11  וַיִּקְרָ֛א (And cried out) יְשַׁעְיָ֥הוּ (Isaiah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַיָּ֣שֶׁב (and He brought back) אֶת־ (-) הַצֵּ֗ל (the shadow) בַּֽ֠מַּעֲלוֹת (by the degrees) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יָרְדָ֜ה (it had gone down) בְּמַעֲל֥וֹת (on the steps) אָחָ֛ז (of Ahaz)— אֲחֹֽרַנִּ֖ית (backward) עֶ֥שֶׂר (ten) מַעֲלֽוֹת׃פ (degrees).

Hezekiah Shows His Treasures
(Isaiah 39:1–8)

12  בָּעֵ֣ת (At the time) הַהִ֡יא (that), שָׁלַ֡ח (sent) בְּרֹאדַ֣ךְ (Berodach-) בַּ֠לְאֲדָן (baladan) בֶּֽן־ (son) בַּלְאֲדָ֧ן (of Baladan) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֛ל (of Babylon) סְפָרִ֥ים (letters) וּמִנְחָ֖ה (and a present) אֶל־ (to) חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ (Hezekiah), כִּ֣י (for) שָׁמַ֔ע (he heard) כִּ֥י (that) חָלָ֖ה (had been sick) חִזְקִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Hezekiah). 13  וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And listened) עֲלֵיהֶם֮ (to them) חִזְקִיָּהוּ֒ (Hezekiah) וַיַּרְאֵ֣ם (and showed them) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) נְכֹתֹ֡ה (of his treasure)— אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּסֶף֩ (the silver), וְאֶת־ (and) הַזָּהָ֨ב (the gold), וְאֶת־ (and) הַבְּשָׂמִ֜ים (the spices), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) שֶׁ֣מֶן (the ointment) הַטּ֗וֹב (precious), וְאֵת֙ (and) בֵּ֣ית (and the house) כֵּלָ֔יו (of his armor), וְאֵ֛ת (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נִמְצָ֖א (was found) בְּאֽוֹצְרֹתָ֑יו (among his treasures). לֹֽא־ (Not) הָיָ֣ה (there was) דָבָ֗ר (a thing) אֲ֠שֶׁר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) הֶרְאָ֧ם (did show them) חִזְקִיָּ֛הוּ (Hezekiah) בְּבֵית֖וֹ (in his house) וּבְכָל־ (and in all) מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃ (his dominion).

14  וַיָּבֹא֙ (And went) יְשַֽׁעְיָ֣הוּ (Isaiah) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (King) חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ (Hezekiah) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him), מָ֥ה (What) אָמְר֣וּ׀ (did say) הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים (the men) הָאֵ֗לֶּה (these), וּמֵאַ֙יִן֙ (and from where) יָבֹ֣אוּ (did they come) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you)?

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) חִזְקִיָּ֔הוּ (Hezekiah), מֵאֶ֧רֶץ (From a land) רְחוֹקָ֛ה (distant) בָּ֖אוּ (they came), מִבָּבֶֽל׃ (from Babylon).

15  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), מָ֥ה (What) רָא֖וּ (have they seen) בְּבֵיתֶ֑ךָ (in your house)?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) חִזְקִיָּ֗הוּ (Hezekiah) אֵ֣ת (-), כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that is) בְּבֵיתִי֙ (in my house) רָא֔וּ (they have seen). לֹא־ (Not) הָיָ֥ה (there is) דָבָ֛ר (a thing) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) הִרְאִיתִ֖ם (I have shown them) בְּאֹצְרֹתָֽי׃ (among my treasures).

16  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְשַׁעְיָ֖הוּ (Isaiah) אֶל־ (to) חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ (Hezekiah), שְׁמַ֖ע (Hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH): 17  הִנֵּה֮ (Behold), יָמִ֣ים (the days) בָּאִים֒ (are coming), וְנִשָּׂ֣א׀ (and will be lifted) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) בְּבֵיתֶ֗ךָ (in your house) וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר (and that) אָצְר֧וּ (have accumulated) אֲבֹתֶ֛יךָ (your fathers) עַד־ (until) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֖ה (this), בָּבֶ֑לָה (to Babylon). לֹֽא־ (Not) יִוָּתֵ֥ר (will be left) דָּבָ֖ר (a thing), אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 18  וּמִבָּנֶ֜יךָ (And from your sons) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) יֵצְא֧וּ (will go forth) מִמְּךָ֛ (from you), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) תּוֹלִ֖יד (you will beget), יִקָּח (they will be taken) וְהָיוּ֙ (and they will be) סָֽרִיסִ֔ים (eunuchs) בְּהֵיכַ֖ל (in the palace) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) בָּבֶֽל׃ (of Babylon).

19  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Hezekiah) אֶֽל־ (to) יְשַֽׁעְיָ֔הוּ (Isaiah), ט֥וֹב (Is good) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבַּ֑רְתָּ (you have spoken). וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And for he said), הֲל֛וֹא (Why not) אִם־ (if) שָׁל֥וֹם (peace) וֶאֱמֶ֖ת (and security) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there will be) בְיָמָֽי׃ (in my days)?

Manasseh Succeeds Hezekiah

20  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֤י (of the acts) חִזְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (of Hezekiah), וְכָל־ (and all) גְּב֣וּרָת֔וֹ (his might), וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר (and how) עָשָׂ֗ה (he made) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּרֵכָה֙ (the pool) וְאֶת־ (and) הַתְּעָלָ֔ה (the tunnel) וַיָּבֵ֥א (and brought) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּ֖יִם (the water) הָעִ֑ירָה (into the city), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)?

21  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב (And rested) חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ (Hezekiah) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֑יו (his fathers), וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (and reigned) מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה (Manasseh) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
