Manasseh Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 33:1–9)

1  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁתֵּ֨ים (of two) עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה (and ten) שָׁנָה֙ (years) מְנַשֶּׁ֣ה (Manasseh was) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וַחֲמִשִּׁ֤ים (and five) וְחָמֵשׁ֙ (and fifty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֥ם (And the name) אִמּ֖וֹ (of his mother) חֶפְצִי־ (was Hephzi-) בָֽהּ׃ (bah). 2  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כְּתֽוֹעֲבֹת֙ (according to the abominations) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations) אֲשֶׁר֙ (whom) הוֹרִ֣ישׁ (had cast out) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מִפְּנֵ֖י (before) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 3  וַיָּ֗שָׁב (And he turned) וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ (and built) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּמ֔וֹת (the high places) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אִבַּ֖ד (had destroyed) חִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Hezekiah) אָבִ֑יו (his father), וַיָּ֨קֶם (and he raised up) מִזְבְּחֹ֜ת (altars) לַבַּ֗עַל (for Baal) וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (and made) אֲשֵׁרָה֙ (an Asherah pole) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשָׂ֗ה (had done) אַחְאָב֙ (Ahab) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ (and he worshiped) לְכָל־ (all) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (of the heavens) וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֖ד (and served) אֹתָֽם׃ (them).

4  וּבָנָ֥ה (And He built) מִזְבְּחֹ֖ת (altars) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁר֙ (of which) אָמַ֣ר (had said) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (In Jerusalem) אָשִׂ֥ים (I will put) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמִֽי׃ (My Name). 5  וַיִּ֥בֶן (And he built) מִזְבְּח֖וֹת (altars) לְכָל־ (for all) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens) בִּשְׁתֵּ֖י (in the two) חַצְר֥וֹת (courts) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 6  וְהֶעֱבִ֤יר (And he made pass through) אֶת־ (-) בְּנוֹ֙ (his son) בָּאֵ֔שׁ (the fire), וְעוֹנֵ֣ן (and he practiced divination), וְנִחֵ֔שׁ (and used witchcraft), וְעָ֥שָׂה (and consulted) א֖וֹב (a medium) וְיִדְּעֹנִ֑ים (and spiritists). הִרְבָּ֗ה (He multiplied) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) הָרַ֛ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לְהַכְעִֽיס׃ (to provoke Him to anger).

7  וַיָּ֕שֶׂם (And he set) אֶת־ (-) פֶּ֥סֶל (a carved image) הָאֲשֵׁרָ֖ה (of Asherah) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (He had made) בַּבַּ֗יִת (in the house), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (of which) אָמַ֤ר (had said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִד֙ (David) וְאֶל־ (and to) שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה (Solomon) בְנ֔וֹ (his son), בַּבַּ֨יִת (In the house) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (and in Jerusalem), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) בָּחַ֙רְתִּי֙ (I have chosen) מִכֹּל֙ (out of all) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (the tribes) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), אָשִׂ֥ים (I will put) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמִ֖י (My name) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever). 8  וְלֹ֣א (And not) אֹסִ֗יף (I will add) לְהָנִיד֙ (to make wander) רֶ֣גֶל (the feet) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מִן־ (from) הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֖תִּי (I gave) לַֽאֲבוֹתָ֑ם (to their fathers), רַ֣ק׀ (only) אִם־ (if) יִשְׁמְר֣וּ (they are careful) לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת (to do) כְּכֹל֙ (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) צִוִּיתִ֔ים (I have commanded them) וּלְכָל־ (and according to all) הַ֨תּוֹרָ֔ה (the law) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֥ה (commanded) אֹתָ֖ם (them) עַבְדִּ֥י (My servant) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses).

9  וְלֹ֖א (And not) שָׁמֵ֑עוּ (they listened), וַיַּתְעֵ֤ם (and led them astray) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (Manasseh) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to do) אֶת־ (-) הָרָ֔ע (more evil) מִן־ (than) הַ֨גּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations) אֲשֶׁר֙ (whom) הִשְׁמִ֣יד (had destroyed) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) מִפְּנֵ֖י (before) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

Manasseh’s Idolatries Rebuked
(2 Chronicles 33:10–20)

10  וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) בְּיַד־ (by) עֲבָדָ֥יו (His servants) הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים (the prophets), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 11  יַעַן֩ (Because) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשָׂ֜ה (has done) מְנַשֶּׁ֤ה (Manasseh) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) הַתֹּעֵב֣וֹת (the abominations) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these), הֵרַ֕ע (he has acted more wickedly) מִכֹּ֛ל (than all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשׂ֥וּ (did) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (the Amorite) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) לְפָנָ֑יו (before him), וַיַּחֲטִ֥א (and he has caused to sin) גַֽם־ (also) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָ֖ה (Judah) בְּגִלּוּלָֽיו׃פ (with his idols). 12  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel): הִנְנִי֙ (Behold), מֵבִ֣יא (I am bringing in) רָעָ֔ה (calamity) עַל־ (upon) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (Jerusalem) וִֽיהוּדָ֑ה (and Judah), אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) כָּל־ (everyone) שֹׁמְעָיו (who hears it) תִּצַּ֖לְנָה (will tingle) שְׁתֵּ֥י (the two) אָזְנָֽיו׃ (of his ears).

13  וְנָטִ֣יתִי (And I will stretch out) עַל־ (over) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (Jerusalem) אֵ֚ת (-) קָ֣ו (the measuring line) שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן (of Samaria) וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁקֹ֖לֶת (and the plumb line) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) אַחְאָ֑ב (of Ahab), וּמָחִ֨יתִי (and I will wipe out) אֶת־ (-) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (Jerusalem) כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־ (as) יִמְחֶ֤ה (one wipes) אֶת־ (-) הַצַּלַּ֙חַת֙ (the bowl), מָחָ֔ה (wiping it) וְהָפַ֖ךְ (and turning it) עַל־ (upon) פָּנֶֽיהָ׃ (its face). 14  וְנָטַשְׁתִּ֗י (And I will forsake) אֵ֚ת (-) שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) נַחֲלָתִ֔י (of My inheritance) וּנְתַתִּ֖ים (and I will give them) בְּיַ֣ד (into the hand) אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֑ם (of their enemies), וְהָי֥וּ (and they shall become) לְבַ֛ז (plunder) וְלִמְשִׁסָּ֖ה (and spoil) לְכָל־ (to all) אֹיְבֵיהֶֽם׃ (their enemies), 15  יַ֗עַן (because) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשׂ֤וּ (they have done) אֶת־ (-) הָרַע֙ (evil) בְּעֵינַ֔י (in My eyes) וַיִּהְי֥וּ (and have) מַכְעִסִ֖ים (provoked to anger) אֹתִ֑י (Me) מִן־ (since) הַיּ֗וֹם (the day) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יָצְא֤וּ (came) אֲבוֹתָם֙ (their fathers) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (out of Egypt), וְעַ֖ד (and up to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

16  וְגַם֩ (And also) דָּ֨ם (blood) נָקִ֜י (innocent) שָׁפַ֤ךְ (shed) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (Manasseh) הַרְבֵּ֣ה (much) מְאֹ֔ד (very), עַ֛ד (until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) מִלֵּ֥א (he had filled) אֶת־ (-) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (Jerusalem) פֶּ֣ה (from one end) לָפֶ֑ה (to another), לְבַ֤ד (besides) מֵֽחַטָּאתוֹ֙ (his sin) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (by which) הֶחֱטִ֣יא (he caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (by doing) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

17  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֤י (of the acts) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (of Manasseh), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔ה (he did), וְחַטָּאת֖וֹ (and his sin) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חָטָ֑א (he committed), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)?

18  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (Manasseh) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר (and was buried) בְּגַן־ (in the garden) בֵּית֖וֹ (of his own house), בְּגַן־ (in the garden) עֻזָּ֑א (of Uzza). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אָמ֥וֹן (Amon) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

Amon Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 33:21–25)

19  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וּשְׁתַּ֤יִם (and two) שָׁנָה֙ (years) אָמ֣וֹן (Amon was) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁתַּ֣יִם (and two) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) מְשֻׁלֶּ֥מֶת (was Meshullemeth) בַּת־ (daughter) חָר֖וּץ (of Haruz) מִן־ (of) יָטְבָֽה׃ (Jotbah). 20  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) עָשָׂ֖ה (had done) מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה (Manasseh) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father). 21  וַיֵּ֕לֶךְ (And he walked) בְּכָל־ (in all) הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ (the ways) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הָלַ֣ךְ (had walked) אָבִ֑יו (his father), וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֗ד (and he served) אֶת־ (-) הַגִּלֻּלִים֙ (the idols) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָבַ֣ד (had served) אָבִ֔יו (his father), וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and he bowed low) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them). 22  וַיַּעֲזֹ֕ב (And He forsook) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אֲבֹתָ֑יו (of his fathers) וְלֹ֥א (and not) הָלַ֖ךְ (he did walk) בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ (in the way) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

23  וַיִּקְשְׁר֥וּ (And conspired) עַבְדֵֽי־ (the servants) אָמ֖וֹן (of Amon) עָלָ֑יו (against him) וַיָּמִ֥יתוּ (and killed) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) בְּבֵיתֽוֹ׃ (in his own house). 24  וַיַּךְ֙ (And struck) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַקֹּשְׁרִ֖ים (those who had conspired) עַל־ (against) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (King) אָמ֑וֹן (Amon), וַיַּמְלִ֧יכוּ (and made king) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֛רֶץ (of the land) אֶת־ (-) יֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ (Josiah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ (in his place).

25  וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) אָמ֖וֹן (of Amon) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)? 26  וַיִּקְבֹּ֥ר (And he was buried) אֹת֛וֹ (-) בִּקְבֻרָת֖וֹ (in his tomb) בְּגַן־ (in the garden) עֻזָּ֑א (of Uzza). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) יֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ (Josiah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
