Pashhur Persecutes Jeremiah

1  וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (And heard) פַּשְׁחוּר֙ (Pashhur) בֶּן־ (son) אִמֵּ֣ר (of Immer) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וְהֽוּא־ (and he was) פָקִ֥יד (governor) נָגִ֖יד (chief) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), אֶֽת־ (-) יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ (Jeremiah) נִבָּ֖א (prophesying) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֥ים (things) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these). 2  וַיַּכֶּ֣ה (And struck) פַשְׁח֔וּר (Pashhur) אֵ֖ת (-) יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֑יא (the prophet), וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (and he put) אֹת֜וֹ (him) עַל־ (in) הַמַּהְפֶּ֗כֶת (the stocks) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that were) בְּשַׁ֤עַר (gate) בִּנְיָמִן֙ (of Benjamin), הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן (in the high) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that was) בְּבֵ֥ית (at the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

3  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת (on the next day), וַיֹּצֵ֥א (brought out) פַשְׁח֛וּר (that Pashhur) אֶֽת־ (-) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (Jeremiah) מִן־ (from), הַמַּהְפָּ֑כֶת (the stocks). וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (Said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him) יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ (and Jeremiah) לֹ֤א (Has not) פַשְׁחוּר֙ (Pashhur), קָרָ֤א (called) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) שְׁמֶ֔ךָ (your name) כִּ֖י (but) אִם־ (rather) מָג֥וֹר (Magor-) מִסָּבִֽיב׃פ (missabib). 4  כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֣ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֡ה (YHWH), הִנְנִי֩ (Behold, I) נֹתֶנְךָ֨ (will make you) לְמָג֜וֹר (a terror) לְךָ֣ (to yourself) וּלְכָל־ (and to all) אֹהֲבֶ֗יךָ (your friends); וְנָֽפְל֛וּ (and they will fall) בְּחֶ֥רֶב (by the sword) אֹיְבֵיהֶ֖ם (of their enemies), וְעֵינֶ֣יךָ (and your eyes) רֹא֑וֹת (will see it) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) יְהוּדָ֗ה (Judah) אֶתֵּן֙ (I will give) בְּיַ֣ד (into the hand) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (of the king) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon), וְהִגְלָ֥ם (and he will carry them off) בָּבֶ֖לָה (to Babylon), וְהִכָּ֥ם (and strike them) בֶּחָֽרֶב׃ (with the sword). 5  וְנָתַתִּ֗י (And I will give) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) חֹ֙סֶן֙ (the wealth) הָעִ֣יר (city), הַזֹּ֔את (of this) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) יְגִיעָ֖הּ (its produce) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) יְקָרָ֑הּ (its precious things) וְאֵ֨ת (and) כָּל־ (all) אוֹצְר֜וֹת (the treasures) מַלְכֵ֣י (of the kings) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah) אֶתֵּן֙ (I will give it all) בְּיַ֣ד (into the hand) אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם (of their enemies), וּבְזָזוּם֙ (and they will plunder them) וּלְקָח֔וּם (and seize them) וֶהֱבִיא֖וּם (and bring them) בָּבֶֽלָה׃ (to Babylon). 6  וְאַתָּ֣ה (And you), פַשְׁח֗וּר (Pashhur), וְכֹל֙ (and all) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (those dwelling in) בֵיתֶ֔ךָ (your house) תֵּלְכ֖וּ (shall go) בַּשֶּׁ֑בִי (into captivity); וּבָבֶ֣ל (and to Babylon), תָּב֗וֹא (you will go) וְשָׁ֤ם (and there) תָּמוּת֙ (you will die), וְשָׁ֣ם (and there), תִּקָּבֵ֔ר (you will be buried) אַתָּה֙ (you), וְכָל־ (and all) אֹ֣הֲבֶ֔יךָ (you love), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) נִבֵּ֥אתָ (you have prophesied) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) בַּשָּֽׁקֶר׃ס (lies).

Jeremiah’s Complaint

7  פִּתִּיתַ֤נִי (You have persuaded me) יְהוָה֙ (O YHWH), וָֽאֶפָּ֔ת (and I was persuaded);

חֲזַקְתַּ֖נִי (You are stronger than I) וַתּוּכָ֑ל (and You have prevailed).

הָיִ֤יתִי (I have become) לִשְׂחוֹק֙ (a laughingstock) כָּל־ (all) הַיּ֔וֹם (the day),

כֻּלֹּ֖ה (and every one) לֹעֵ֥ג (is mocking) לִֽי׃ (at me).

8  כִּֽי־ (For) מִדֵּ֤י (whenever) אֲדַבֵּר֙ (I speak), אֶזְעָ֔ק (I cry out),

חָמָ֥ס (Violence) וָשֹׁ֖ד (And destruction); אֶקְרָ֑א (I shout)

כִּֽי־ (for) הָיָ֨ה (has become) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) לִ֛י (to me)

לְחֶרְפָּ֥ה (as a reproach) וּלְקֶ֖לֶס (and as a derision), כָּל־ (all) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (the day).

9  וְאָמַרְתִּ֣י (And I said), לֹֽא־ (Not) אֶזְכְּרֶ֗נּוּ (I will mention Him)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) אֲדַבֵּ֥ר (I will speak) עוֹד֙ (anymore) בִּשְׁמ֔וֹ (in His name).

וְהָיָ֤ה (And it is) בְלִבִּי֙ (in my heart) כְּאֵ֣שׁ (like a fire) בֹּעֶ֔רֶת (burning)

עָצֻ֖ר (shut up) בְּעַצְמֹתָ֑י (in my bones),

וְנִלְאֵ֥יתִי (and I become weary) כַּֽלְכֵ֖ל (of containing it),

וְלֹ֥א (and I could not) אוּכָֽל׃ (stay).

10  כִּ֣י (For) שָׁמַ֜עְתִּי (I heard) דִּבַּ֣ת (the whispering) רַבִּים֮ (of many),

מָג֣וֹר (terror) מִסָּבִיב֒ (from every side).

הַגִּ֙ידוּ֙ (Report) וְנַגִּידֶ֔נּוּ (and let us report him)

כֹּ֚ל (every) אֱנ֣וֹשׁ (man) שְׁלוֹמִ֔י (close to me)

שֹׁמְרֵ֖י (was watching for) צַלְעִ֑י (my stumbling),

אוּלַ֤י (Perhaps) יְפֻתֶּה֙ (he can be persuaded),

וְנ֣וּכְלָה (so that we may prevail) ל֔וֹ (against him)

וְנִקְחָ֥ה (and we will take) נִקְמָתֵ֖נוּ (our vengeance) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (on him).

11  וַֽיהוָ֤ה (And YHWH is) אוֹתִי֙ (with me) כְּגִבּ֣וֹר (as a mighty) עָרִ֔יץ (awesome one);

עַל־ (for) כֵּ֛ן (thus) רֹדְפַ֥י (my pursuers) יִכָּשְׁל֖וּ (will stumble), וְלֹ֣א (and will not) יֻכָ֑לוּ (prevail).

בֹּ֤שׁוּ (Ashamed); מְאֹד֙ (they will be greatly) כִּֽי־ (indeed) לֹ֣א (not) הִשְׂכִּ֔ילוּ (they will succeed);

כְּלִמַּ֥ת (disgrace) עוֹלָ֖ם (everlasting) לֹ֥א (not) תִשָּׁכֵֽחַ׃ (will be forgotten).

12  וַיהוָ֤ה (And YHWH) צְבָאוֹת֙ (of Hosts), בֹּחֵ֣ן (the One testing) צַדִּ֔יק (the righteous),

רֹאֶ֥ה (the One seeing) כְלָי֖וֹת (the kidneys) וָלֵ֑ב (and mind),

אֶרְאֶ֤ה (let me see) נִקְמָֽתְךָ֙ (Your vengeance) מֵהֶ֔ם (on them)

כִּ֥י (for) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you) גִּלִּ֥יתִי (I have uncovered) אֶת־ (-) רִיבִֽי׃ס (my dispute).

13  שִׁ֚ירוּ (Sing) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH),

הַֽלְל֖וּ (Praise) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH)!

כִּ֥י (For) הִצִּ֛יל (He has delivered) אֶת־ (-) נֶ֥פֶשׁ (the soul) אֶבְי֖וֹן (of the needy)

מִיַּ֥ד (from the hand) מְרֵעִֽים׃ס (of evildoers).

14  אָר֣וּר (Cursed be) הַיּ֔וֹם (the day) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) יֻלַּ֖דְתִּי (I was born); בּ֑וֹ (in it)

י֛וֹם (the day) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְלָדַ֥תְנִי (bore me) אִמִּ֖י (my mother) אַל־ (not) יְהִ֥י (let it be) בָרֽוּךְ׃ (blessed).

15  אָר֣וּר (Cursed) הָאִ֗ישׁ (be the man) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) בִּשַּׂ֤ר (brought news) אֶת־ (-) אָבִי֙ (to my father),

לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), יֻֽלַּד־ (Has been born) לְךָ֖ (to you) בֵּ֣ן (child) זָכָ֑ר (a male)

שַׂמֵּ֖חַ (bringing joy) שִׂמֳּחָֽהוּ׃ (bringing him joy).

16  וְהָיָה֙ (Be) הָאִ֣ישׁ (man) הַה֔וּא (and let that) כֶּֽעָרִ֛ים (like the cities)

אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הָפַ֥ךְ (overthrew), יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) וְלֹ֣א (and did not); נִחָ֑ם (relent)

וְשָׁמַ֤ע (and let him hear) זְעָקָה֙ (an outcry) בַּבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning),

וּתְרוּעָ֖ה (and a battle cry) בְּעֵ֥ת (at) צָהֳרָֽיִם׃ (noon);

17  אֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) לֹא־ (not) מוֹתְתַ֖נִי (he did kill me) מֵרָ֑חֶם (from the womb);

וַתְּהִי־ (that might have been) לִ֤י (-) אִמִּי֙ (my mother) קִבְרִ֔י (my grave),

וְרַחְמָ֖הֿ (and her womb) הֲרַ֥ת (pregnant) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

18  לָ֤מָּה (Why is) זֶּה֙ (this) מֵרֶ֣חֶם (that from the womb) יָצָ֔אתִי (I came forth)

לִרְא֥וֹת (to see) עָמָ֖ל (trouble) וְיָג֑וֹן (and sorrow),

וַיִּכְל֥וּ (should be consumed) בְּבֹ֖שֶׁת (with shame)? יָמָֽי׃פ (That my days).
