The Parable of the Wicked Tenants
(Matthew 21:33–46; Luke 20:9–18)

1And He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, and he placed around it a fence and dug a wine vat and built a tower, and he rented it out to farmers and traveled abroad.

2And he sent a servant to the farmers in the season, so that he might receive from the farmers from the fruit of the vineyard. 3And having taken him, they beat him and sent him away empty.

4And again he sent to them another servant, and that one† they struck on the head and dishonored him.†

5And he sent another, and that one they killed—and many others—indeed beating some and killing some.

6Yet having one† beloved son, he sent him to them last, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

7But those farmers said† to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8And having taken him, they killed him and cast him out of the vineyard.

9What therefore† will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and will destroy the farmers, and he will give the vineyard to others. 10Did you⁺ not even read this Scripture:

‘The stone that those building rejected,

this became the head of the corner;

11this was from the Lord,

and it is marvelous in our eyes’†?”

12And they were seeking† to lay hold of Him, and they feared the crowd; for they knew that He spoke the parable against them. And having left Him, they went away.

Paying Taxes to Caesar
(Matthew 22:15–22; Luke 20:19–26)

13And they send to Him some of the Pharisees and Herodians, so that they might catch Him in a word. 14And having come, they say to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and to You there is no care about anyone; for You do not look to the appearance of men, but You teach the way of God on the basis of truth. Is it lawful† to give tribute to Caesar or not? Should we pay or not pay?”

15But knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, “Why do you⁺ test Me? Bring Me a denarius,† so that I might see it.” 16And they brought it. And He says to them, “Whose image is this—and the inscription?”

And they said to Him, “Caesar’s.”

17And† Jesus said to them, “Give back the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God.”

And they were marveling at Him.

The Sadducees and the Resurrection
(Matthew 22:23–33; Luke 20:27–40)

18And some Sadducees, who say there is not a resurrection, come to Him. And they were questioning Him, saying, 19“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if anyone’s brother should die and leave behind a wife and not leave a child, that his brother should take the wife and should raise up seed for his brother.† 20There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and dying, left no seed. 21And the second took her and died, not having left behind seed; and the third likewise. 22And the seven† left no seed. Last of all, the woman also died. 23In the resurrection, when they rise,† of which of them will she be wife? For the seven had her as wife.”

24Jesus was saying to them,† “Do you⁺ not go astray because of this, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God? 25For when they rise out from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but they are like angels in the heavens.

26But concerning the dead, that they rise, did you⁺ not read in the book of Moses, at the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob’†? 27He is not God of the dead, but† of the living. You⁺ go astray† greatly!”

The Greatest Commandment
(Deuteronomy 6:1–19; Matthew 22:34–40)

28And one of the scribes having come, having heard them reasoning together, having seen that He answered them well, questioned Him, “Which commandment is first of all?”

29Jesus answered, “The first† is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One. 30And you shall love the Lord your God out of all your heart and out of all your soul and out of all your mind and out of all your strength.’† 31The second† is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’† There is not another commandment greater than these.”

32And the scribe said to Him, “Right, Teacher; You have spoken according to truth that He is One and that there is not another besides Him, 33and to love Him out of all the heart and out of all the understanding† and out of all the strength, and to love the neighbor as oneself is more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34And Jesus, having seen him that he answered wisely, said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

And no one dared to question Him any longer.

Whose Son Is the Christ?
(Matthew 22:41–46; Luke 20:41–44)

35And answering, Jesus was saying, teaching in the temple,† “How do the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36David himself said in the Holy Spirit:

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at My right hand

until I place Your enemies

as a footstool for Your feet.”’†

37David† himself calls Him ‘Lord.’ And from where is He his son?”

And the great crowd was listening to Him gladly.

Beware of the Scribes
(Luke 20:45–47)

38And in His teaching He was saying,† “Beware of the scribes, who are wanting to walk about in long robes and greetings in the marketplaces, 39and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at the suppers— 40those devouring the houses of widows† and praying long as a pretext. These will receive more abundant judgment.”

The Widow’s Offering
(Luke 21:1–4)

41And having sat down opposite the treasury, He was watching how the crowd casts money into the treasury; and many rich ones were casting in much. 42And having come, one poor widow cast in two lepta, which is a kodrantes.†

43And having summoned His disciples, He said to them, “Truly I say to you⁺ that this poor widow cast in more than all of those casting into the treasury. 44For all cast in out of that which is abounding to them, but she out of her poverty cast in all, as much as she had—her whole livelihood.”
