Temple Destruction and Other Signs
(Matthew 24:1–8; Luke 21:5–9)

1And on His going forth out of the temple, one of His disciples says to Him, “Teacher, behold what stones and what buildings!”

2And Jesus said to him,” “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone here shall be left upon a stone that shall not be thrown down.”

3And in His sitting at the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him by Himself, 4“Tell us when these things will be, and what is the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

5And Jesus began to say to them, “Take heed, lest anyone may lead you⁺ astray. 6Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and they will lead many astray. 7And when you⁺ shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. It is necessary to happen, but the end is not yet. 8For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

Witnessing to All Nations
(Matthew 24:9–14; Luke 21:10–19)

9But you⁺, take heed to yourselves. They will deliver you⁺ up to courts, and you⁺ will be beaten in synagogues, and you⁺ will stand before governors and kings on account of Me, for a testimony to them. 10And to all the nations first it is necessary for the gospel to be proclaimed. 11But when they might lead you⁺ away, delivering you up, do not be anxious beforehand what you⁺ shall speak; but whatever might be given to you⁺ in that hour, speak that. For you⁺ are not the ones speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12And brother will deliver up brother to death, and father, child; and children will rise up against parents and will put them to death. 13And you⁺ will be hated by all because of My name; but the one having endured to the end, he will be saved.

The Abomination of Desolation
(Matthew 24:15–25; Luke 21:20–24)

14But when you⁺ shall see the ‘abomination of the desolation’ standing where it should not (the one reading, let him understand), then those in Judea, let them flee to the mountains; 15and the one upon the housetop, let him not come down nor go in to take up anything out of his house; 16and the one in the field, let him not return to the things behind to take away his garment.

17And woe to those having in womb and to those nursing in those days! 18And pray that it might not be in winter, 19for those days will be tribulation such as has not been from the beginning of creation that God created until now, and never shall be. 20And if the Lord did not shorten the days, not any flesh would have been saved; but because of the chosen whom He chose, He shortened the days.

21And then if anyone shall say to you⁺, ‘Behold, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Behold, there!’ do not believe it. 22For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will give signs and wonders in order to lead astray, if possible, the chosen. 23But you⁺ take heed; I have forewarned you⁺ of all things.

The Return of the Son of Man
(Matthew 24:26–31; Luke 21:25–28)

24But in those days, after that tribulation:

‘The sun will be darkened,

and the moon will not give her light;

25and the stars will be falling out of the sky,

and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.’

26And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27And then He will send the angels, and He will gather together His chosen from the four winds, from the end of earth to the end of heaven.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree
(Matthew 24:32–35; Luke 21:29–33)

28And from the fig tree, learn the parable: When its branch already shall have become tender, and it puts forth leaves, you⁺ know that summer is near. 29So also you⁺, when you⁺ see these things coming to pass, know that He is near, at the doors. 30Truly I say to you⁺ that this generation shall not have passed away until all these things shall have come to pass. 31The heaven and the earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

Readiness at Any Hour
(Matthew 24:36–51; Luke 12:35–48)

32But concerning that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, except the Father. 33Take heed; stay awake! For you⁺ do not know when the time is.

34It is like a man going on a journey, having left his house and having given his servants authority, to each his work. And he commanded the doorkeeper that he should watch. 35Therefore watch, for you⁺ do not know when the master of the house comes—either at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or morning— 36lest, having come suddenly, he should find you⁺ sleeping. 37And what I say to you⁺, I say to all: Watch!”
