But Jesus asked him
In this moment, Jesus directly addresses Judas, highlighting the personal nature of the betrayal. This interaction occurs in the Garden of Gethsemane, a place Jesus often visited with His disciples. The question posed by Jesus is not for His own understanding, as He is fully aware of Judas's intentions, but rather to confront Judas with the gravity of his actions. This reflects Jesus' omniscience and His role as a teacher, even in moments of personal betrayal.

Judas
Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, is the one who betrays Jesus. His name has become synonymous with betrayal. Historically, Judas was the treasurer for the disciples, and his motivations for betrayal are often linked to greed, as he was paid thirty pieces of silver by the chief priests. Judas's actions fulfill the prophecy found in Psalm 41:9, which speaks of a close friend lifting his heel against the psalmist, a foreshadowing of the betrayal of Jesus.

are you betraying
The act of betrayal is significant in biblical terms, as it involves a breach of trust and loyalty. Judas's betrayal is particularly heinous because it is against Jesus, who had shown him love and trust. This act sets in motion the events leading to the crucifixion, which is central to the Christian understanding of salvation. The betrayal is a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, such as Zechariah 11:12-13, which speaks of the thirty pieces of silver.

the Son of Man
The title "Son of Man" is one Jesus frequently uses for Himself, emphasizing both His humanity and His divine authority. It is a messianic title rooted in Daniel 7:13-14, where the Son of Man is given dominion and glory. By using this title, Jesus underscores His identity and mission, even in the face of betrayal. This title also connects to the suffering servant motif found in Isaiah, highlighting Jesus' role in God's redemptive plan.

with a kiss?
A kiss, in the cultural context of the time, was a common greeting among friends and a sign of respect and affection. Judas's use of a kiss to betray Jesus is particularly poignant and ironic, as it turns a symbol of love into one of treachery. This act of betrayal with a kiss is a stark contrast to the love and loyalty expected among Jesus' followers. It serves as a powerful reminder of the deceitfulness of sin and the depth of human betrayal.

What Does Luke 22:48 Mean
But Jesus asked him

- Jesus is not caught off guard; He initiates the conversation just as He previously foretold His betrayal (Luke 22:21).

- His question highlights His omniscience, echoing earlier moments when He knew what was in people’s hearts (John 2:24-25).

- By addressing Judas directly, Jesus fulfills His own words in John 13:18, “The Scripture must be fulfilled, ‘He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’”

Judas

- Judas had already conspired with the chief priests and officers for thirty pieces of silver (Luke 22:3-6; Matthew 26:14-16).

- Though one of the Twelve, he chose darkness over light (John 12:4-6; John 13:30).

- His name here stands in stark contrast to the loyalty expected of a disciple, much like Demas later forsaking Paul “because he loved this present world” (2 Timothy 4:10).

Are you betraying

- Betrayal was foretold centuries earlier: “Even my close friend in whom I trusted… has lifted up his heel against me” (Psalm 41:9).

- Jesus’ question exposes Judas’s treachery, paralleling the warning, “Friend, why have you come?” spoken in Matthew 26:50.

- The word “betray” carries moral weight; Judas is rejecting fellowship for personal gain, echoing Esau selling his birthright (Hebrews 12:16).

The Son of Man

- This title links Jesus to Daniel 7:13-14, underscoring His divine authority and messianic mission.

- Judas is not merely wronging a rabbi; he is opposing the One who will “sit at the right hand of the Power of God” (Luke 22:69).

- Earlier, Jesus warned that “the Son of Man will be delivered over…and they will kill Him” (Mark 10:33-34), showing this moment fits God’s sovereign plan.

With a kiss?

- A kiss was a customary greeting among disciples (Romans 16:16), intended to show affection and unity.

- The kiss becomes a symbol of hypocrisy, similar to Joab seizing Amasa’s beard to kiss him while planning murder (2 Samuel 20:9-10).

- Proverbs 27:6 contrasts “faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy,” perfectly describing Judas’s act.

- Matthew 26:48-49 details how the pre-arranged signal—“The One I kiss is the Man”—turned an intimate gesture into a tool of arrest.

summary

Luke 22:48 reveals the bitter irony of Judas using an affectionate sign to hand over the Messiah. Jesus’ question lays bare Judas’s heart, fulfills prophecy, and affirms Christ’s foreknowledge and authority. The verse challenges every believer to sincere devotion, reminding us that outward signs of friendship mean nothing without genuine loyalty to the Son of Man.

(48) Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man?--The first three Gospels all record the Traitor's kiss. St. Luke alone reports the question. In our Lord's use of the words, "the Son of Man," we may trace a two-fold purpose. It was the old familiar title by which He had been wont to speak of Himself in converse with the disciples, and so it appealed to memory and conscience. It was the name which was specially connected with His office as Judge and King (Daniel 7:13), and so it came as a warning of the terrible retribution which the Traitor was preparing for himself.
