My people, hear my instruction; listen to the words from my mouth.1A well-written song by Asaph. Pay attention, my people, to my instruction! Listen to the words I speak!
I will declare wise sayings; I will speak mysteries from the past--2I will sing a song that imparts wisdom; I will make insightful observations about the past.
things we have heard and known and that our fathers have passed down to us.3What we have heard and learned--that which our ancestors have told us--
We will not hide them from their children, but will tell a future generation the praiseworthy acts of the LORD, his might, and the wondrous works he has performed.4we will not hide from their descendants. We will tell the next generation about the LORD's praiseworthy acts, about his strength and the amazing things he has done.
He established a testimony in Jacob and set up a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children5He established a rule in Jacob; he set up a law in Israel. He commanded our ancestors to make his deeds known to their descendants,
so that a future generation--children yet to be born--might know. They were to rise and tell their children6so that the next generation, children yet to be born, might know about them. They will grow up and tell their descendants about them.
so that they might put their confidence in God and not forget God's works, but keep his commands.7Then they will place their confidence in God. They will not forget the works of God, and they will obey his commands.
Then they would not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not loyal and whose spirit was not faithful to God.8Then they will not be like their ancestors, who were a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that was not committed and faithful to God.
The Ephraimite archers turned back on the day of battle.9The Ephraimites were armed with bows, but they retreated in the day of battle.
They did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his law.10They did not keep their covenant with God, and they refused to obey his law.
They forgot what he had done, the wondrous works he had shown them.11They forgot what he had done, the amazing things he had shown them.
He worked wonders in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.12He did amazing things in the sight of their ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
He split the sea and brought them across; the water stood firm like a wall.13He divided the sea and led them across it; he made the water stand in a heap.
He led them with a cloud by day and with a fiery light throughout the night.14He led them with a cloud by day, and with the light of a fire all night long.
He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.15He broke open rocks in the wilderness, and gave them enough water to fill the depths of the sea.
He brought streams out of the stone and made water flow down like rivers.16He caused streams to flow from the rock, and made the water flow like rivers.
But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.17Yet they continued to sin against him, and rebelled against the sovereign One in the desert.
They deliberately tested God, demanding the food they craved.18They willfully challenged God by asking for food to satisfy their appetite.
They spoke against God, saying, "Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?19They insulted God, saying, "Is God really able to give us food in the wilderness?
Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out; torrents overflowed. But can he also provide bread or furnish meat for his people?"20Yes, he struck a rock and water flowed out, streams gushed forth. But can he also give us food? Will he provide meat for his people?"
Therefore, the LORD heard and became furious; then fire broke out against Jacob, and anger flared up against Israel21When the LORD heard this, he was furious. A fire broke out against Jacob, and his anger flared up against Israel,
because they did not believe God or rely on his salvation.22because they did not have faith in God, and did not trust his ability to deliver them.
He gave a command to the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven.23He gave a command to the clouds above, and opened the doors in the sky.
He rained manna for them to eat; he gave them grain from heaven.24He rained down manna for them to eat; he gave them the grain of heaven.
People ate the bread of angels. He sent them an abundant supply of food.25Man ate the food of the mighty ones. He sent them more than enough to eat.
He made the east wind blow in the skies and drove the south wind by his might.26He brought the east wind through the sky, and by his strength led forth the south wind.
He rained meat on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the seas.27He rained down meat on them like dust, birds as numerous as the sand on the seashores.
He made them fall in the camp, all around the tents.28He caused them to fall right in the middle of their camp, all around their homes.
The people ate and were completely satisfied, for he gave them what they craved.29They ate until they were stuffed; he gave them what they desired.
Before they had turned from what they craved, while the food was still in their mouths,30They were not yet filled up, their food was still in their mouths,
God's anger flared up against them, and he killed some of their best men. He struck down Israel's fit young men.31when the anger of God flared up against them. He killed some of the strongest of them; he brought the young men of Israel to their knees.
Despite all this, they kept sinning and did not believe his wondrous works.32Despite all this, they continued to sin, and did not trust him to do amazing things.
He made their days end in futility, their years in sudden disaster.33So he caused them to die unsatisfied and filled with terror.
When he killed some of them, the rest began to seek him; they repented and searched for God.34When he struck them down, they sought his favor; they turned back and longed for God.
They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their Redeemer.35They remembered that God was their protector, and that the sovereign God was their deliverer.
But they deceived him with their mouths, they lied to him with their tongues,36But they deceived him with their words, and lied to him.
their hearts were insincere toward him, and they were unfaithful to his covenant.37They were not really committed to him, and they were unfaithful to his covenant.
Yet he was compassionate; he atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them. He often turned his anger aside and did not unleash all his wrath.38Yet he is compassionate. He forgives sin and does not destroy. He often holds back his anger, and does not stir up his fury.
He remembered that they were only flesh, a wind that passes and does not return.39He remembered that they were made of flesh, and were like a wind that blows past and does not return.
How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert.40How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and insulted him in the desert!
They constantly tested God and provoked the Holy One of Israel.41They again challenged God, and offended the Holy One of Israel.
They did not remember his power shown on the day he redeemed them from the foe,42They did not remember what he had done, how he delivered them from the enemy,
when he performed his miraculous signs in Egypt and his wonders in the territory of Zoan.43when he performed his awesome deeds in Egypt, and his acts of judgment in the region of Zoan.
He turned their rivers into blood, and they could not drink from their streams.44He turned their rivers into blood, and they could not drink from their streams.
He sent among them swarms of flies, which fed on them, and frogs, which devastated them.45He sent swarms of biting insects against them, as well as frogs that overran their land.
He gave their crops to the caterpillar and the fruit of their labor to the locust.46He gave their crops to the grasshopper, the fruit of their labor to the locust.
He killed their vines with hail and their sycamore fig trees with a flood.47He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore-fig trees with driving rain.
He handed over their livestock to hail and their cattle to lightning bolts.48He rained hail down on their cattle, and hurled lightning bolts down on their livestock.
He sent his burning anger against them: fury, indignation, and calamity--a band of deadly messengers.49His raging anger lashed out against them, He sent fury, rage, and trouble as messengers who bring disaster.
He cleared a path for his anger. He did not spare them from death but delivered their lives to the plague.50He sent his anger in full force; he did not spare them from death; he handed their lives over to destruction.
He struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the first progeny of the tents of Ham.51He struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their reproductive power in the tents of Ham.
He led his people out like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.52Yet he brought out his people like sheep; he led them through the wilderness like a flock.
He led them safely, and they were not afraid; but the sea covered their enemies.53He guided them safely along, while the sea covered their enemies.
He brought them to his holy territory, to the mountain his right hand acquired.54He brought them to the border of his holy land, to this mountainous land which his right hand acquired.
He drove out nations before them. He apportioned their inheritance by lot and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.55He drove the nations out from before them; he assigned them their tribal allotments and allowed the tribes of Israel to settle down.
But they rebelliously tested the Most High God, for they did not keep his decrees.56Yet they challenged and defied the sovereign God, and did not obey his commands.
They treacherously turned away like their fathers; they became warped like a faulty bow.57They were unfaithful and acted as treacherously as their ancestors; they were as unreliable as a malfunctioning bow.
They enraged him with their high places and provoked his jealousy with their carved images.58They made him angry with their pagan shrines, and made him jealous with their idols.
God heard and became furious; he completely rejected Israel.59God heard and was angry; he completely rejected Israel.
He abandoned the tabernacle at Shiloh, the tent where he resided among mankind.60He abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh, the tent where he lived among men.
He gave up his strength to captivity and his splendor to the hand of a foe.61He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured; he gave the symbol of his splendor into the hand of the enemy.
He surrendered his people to the sword because he was enraged with his heritage.62He delivered his people over to the sword, and was angry with his chosen nation.
Fire consumed his chosen young men, and his young women had no wedding songs.63Fire consumed their young men, and their virgins remained unmarried.
His priests fell by the sword, and the widows could not lament.64Their priests fell by the sword, but their widows did not weep.
The Lord awoke as if from sleep, like a warrior from the effects of wine.65But then the Lord awoke from his sleep; he was like a warrior in a drunken rage.
He beat back his foes; he gave them lasting disgrace.66He drove his enemies back; he made them a permanent target for insults.
He rejected the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.67He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
He chose instead the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.68He chose the tribe of Judah, and Mount Zion, which he loves.
He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.69He made his sanctuary as enduring as the heavens above; as secure as the earth, which he established permanently.
He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;70He chose David, his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.
he brought him from tending ewes to be shepherd over his people Jacob--over Israel, his inheritance.71He took him away from following the mother sheep, and made him the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and of Israel, his chosen nation.
He shepherded them with a pure heart and guided them with his skillful hands.72David cared for them with pure motives; he led them with skill.
