When Jesus knew that the Pharisees heard He was making and baptizing more disciples than John1When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John
(though Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were),2(although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),
He left Judea and went again to Galilee.3He left Judea and returned to Galilee.
He had to travel through Samaria,4Now He had to pass through Samaria.
so He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property that Jacob had given his son Joseph.5So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, worn out from His journey, sat down at the well. It was about six in the evening. 6Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. "Give Me a drink," Jesus said to her, 7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
for His disciples had gone into town to buy food." 8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
How is it that You, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" she asked Him. For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. 9“You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered, "If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, Give Me a drink,' you would ask Him, and He would give you living water."" 10Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Sir," said the woman, "You don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do You get this 'living water?11“Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?
You aren't greater than our father Jacob, are You? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock." 12Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”
Jesus said, "Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 13Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again--ever! In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up within him for eternal life."" 14But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
Sir," the woman said to Him, "give me this water so I won't get thirsty and come here to draw water." 15The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
"Go call your husband," He told her, "and come back here."" 16Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
I don't have a husband," she answered. "You have correctly said, I don't have a husband,'" Jesus said. 17“I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.
"For you've had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true."" 18In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”
Sir," the woman replied, "I see that You are a prophet. 19“Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, yet you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem." 20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem.”
Jesus told her, "Believe Me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 21“Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.22You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship Him. 23But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.
God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." 24God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will explain everything to us." 25The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
"I am He," Jesus told her, "the One speaking to you." 26Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
Just then His disciples arrived, and they were amazed that He was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, "What do You want?" or "Why are You talking with her?" 27Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the men, "28Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,
Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could this be the Messiah?"29“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
They left the town and made their way to Him. 30So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.
In the meantime the disciples kept urging Him, "Rabbi, eat something." 31Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
But He said, "I have food to eat that you don't know about." 32But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
The disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought Him something to eat?" 33So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
"My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work," Jesus told them. 34Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.
"Don't you say, There are still four more months, then comes the harvest? Listen to what I'm telling you: Open your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ready for harvest. 35Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.
The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life, so the sower and reaper can rejoice together. 36Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.
For in this case the saying is true: One sows and another reaps.'37For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
I sent you to reap what you didn't labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from their labor." 38I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”
Now many Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of what the woman said when she testified, "He told me everything I ever did." 39Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
Therefore, when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed there two days. 40So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
Many more believed because of what He said.41And many more believed because of His message.
And they told the woman, "We no longer believe because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior of the world." 42They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”
After two days He left there for Galilee.43After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.
Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.44Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.
When they entered Galilee, the Galileans welcomed Him because they had seen everything He did in Jerusalem during the festival. For they also had gone to the festival. 45Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all the great things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they had gone there as well.
Then He went again to Cana of Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.46So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and pleaded with Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. 47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.
Jesus told him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe."" 48Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
Sir," the official said to Him, "come down before my boy dies!" 49“Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”
"Go," Jesus told him, "your son will live." The man believed what Jesus said to him and departed. 50“Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed.
While he was still going down, his slaves met him saying that his boy was alive. 51And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
He asked them at what time he got better. "Yesterday at seven in the morning the fever left him," they answered. 52So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”
The father realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, "Your son will live." Then he himself believed, along with his whole household. 53Then the father realized that this was the very hour in which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and all his household believed.
This, therefore, was the second sign Jesus performed after He came from Judea to Galilee. 54This was now the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.
