Then some Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked, 1Then Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,
"Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands when they eat." 2"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat."
But he answered them, "Why do you also disregard the commandment of God because of your tradition? 3He answered them, "Why do you break God's commandment because of your tradition?
Because God said, 'You are to honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.'4For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.
But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or his mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me has been given to God,"5But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or mother, "Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,"
does not have to honor his father.' Because of your tradition, then, you have disregarded the authority of God's word.6he does not have to honor his father.' In this way, you have nullified the word of God because of your tradition.
You hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,7Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:
These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
Their worship of me is empty, because they teach human rules as doctrines.'" 9They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands."
Then calling out to the crowd, he addressed them, "Listen and understand! 10Summoning the crowd, he told them, "Listen and understand:
It is not what goes into the mouth that makes a person unclean. It is what comes out of the mouth that makes a person unclean."11It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth--this defiles a person."
Then the disciples came and asked him, "Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?"12Then the disciples came up and told him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?"
He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots. 13He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted.
Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If one blind person leads another blind person, both will fall into a ditch."14Leave them alone! They are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."
Then Peter told him, "Explain to us this parable."15Then Peter said, "Explain this parable to us."
Jesus said, "Are you still so ignorant? 16"Do you still lack understanding?" he asked.
Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste? 17"Don't you realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated?
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean. 18But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person.
It is out of the heart that evil thoughts come, as well as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, and slander.19For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander.
These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands doesn't make a person unclean."20These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person."
Then Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 21When Jesus left there, he withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon.
Suddenly, a Canaanite woman from that territory came near and began to shout, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed!" 22Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely tormented by a demon."
But he didn't answer her at all. Then his disciples came up and kept urging him, "Send her away, because she keeps on screaming as she follows us."23Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples approached him and urged him, "Send her away because she's crying out after us."
But he replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel."24He replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
Then she came and fell down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!"25But she came, knelt before him, and said, "Lord, help me!"
He replied, "It's not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies."26He answered, "It isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."
She said, "Yes, Lord. But even the puppies eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' tables."27"Yes, Lord," she said, "yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."
Then Jesus answered her, "Lady, your faith is great! What you want is granted." That very hour her daughter was healed.28Then Jesus replied to her, "Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want." And from that moment her daughter was healed.
Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a hillside and sat down. 29Moving on from there, Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee. He went up on a mountain and sat there,
Large crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to talk, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he healed them. 30and large crowds came to him, including the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he healed them.
As a result, the crowd was amazed to see those who were unable to talk speaking, the crippled healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. So they praised the God of Israel.31So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they gave glory to the God of Israel.
Then Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion for the crowd because they have already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away without food, or they may faint on the road."32Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way."
The disciples asked him, "Where in the wilderness are we to get enough bread to feed such a crowd?"33The disciples said to him, "Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place to feed such a crowd?"
Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish."34"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked them. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish."
Ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, 35After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground,
he took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks. Then he broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 36he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
All of them ate until they were filled, then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces—seven baskets full. 37They all ate and were satisfied. They collected the leftover pieces--seven large baskets full.
Now those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children. 38Now there were four thousand men who had eaten, besides women and children.
After he sent the crowds away, he got into a boat and went to the region of Magadan. 39After dismissing the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
