Then some Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked, | 1Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him, |
"Why do your disciples disregard the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands when they eat." | 2“Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.” |
But he answered them, "Why do you also disregard the commandment of God because of your tradition? | 3Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? |
Because God said, 'You are to honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.' | 4 For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ |
But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or his mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me has been given to God," | 5 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ |
does not have to honor his father.' Because of your tradition, then, you have disregarded the authority of God's word. | 6 In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents. And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition. |
You hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said, | 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, |
These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. | 8 ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. |
Their worship of me is empty, because they teach human rules as doctrines.'" | 9 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ ” |
Then calling out to the crowd, he addressed them, "Listen and understand! | 10Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand. |
It is not what goes into the mouth that makes a person unclean. It is what comes out of the mouth that makes a person unclean." | 11 It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.” |
Then the disciples came and asked him, "Do you realize that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?" | 12Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?” |
He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be pulled up by the roots. | 13Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted, |
Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If one blind person leads another blind person, both will fall into a ditch." | 14 so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.” |
Then Peter told him, "Explain to us this parable." | 15Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.” |
Jesus said, "Are you still so ignorant? | 16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. |
Don't you know that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and then is expelled as waste? | 17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. |
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and it is those things that make a person unclean. | 18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. |
It is out of the heart that evil thoughts come, as well as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, and slander. | 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. |
These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands doesn't make a person unclean." | 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.” The Faith of a Gentile Woman |
Then Jesus left that place and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. | 21Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon. |
Suddenly, a Canaanite woman from that territory came near and began to shout, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed!" | 22A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.” |
But he didn't answer her at all. Then his disciples came up and kept urging him, "Send her away, because she keeps on screaming as she follows us." | 23But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.” |
But he replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel." | 24Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.” |
Then she came and fell down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!" | 25But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!” |
He replied, "It's not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies." | 26Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” |
She said, "Yes, Lord. But even the puppies eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' tables." | 27She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.” |
Then Jesus answered her, "Lady, your faith is great! What you want is granted." That very hour her daughter was healed. | 28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed. Jesus Heals Many People |
Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a hillside and sat down. | 29Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down. |
Large crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to talk, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he healed them. | 30A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all. |
As a result, the crowd was amazed to see those who were unable to talk speaking, the crippled healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. So they praised the God of Israel. | 31The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel. Jesus Feeds Four Thousand |
Then Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion for the crowd because they have already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away without food, or they may faint on the road." | 32Then Jesus called his disciples and told them, “I feel sorry for these people. They have been here with me for three days, and they have nothing left to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, or they will faint along the way.” |
The disciples asked him, "Where in the wilderness are we to get enough bread to feed such a crowd?" | 33The disciples replied, “Where would we get enough food here in the wilderness for such a huge crowd?” |
Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish." | 34Jesus asked, “How much bread do you have?” They replied, “Seven loaves, and a few small fish.” |
Ordering the crowd to sit down on the ground, | 35So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground. |
he took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks. Then he broke them in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. | 36Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, thanked God for them, and broke them into pieces. He gave them to the disciples, who distributed the food to the crowd. |
All of them ate until they were filled, then the disciples picked up what was left of the broken pieces—seven baskets full. | 37They all ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked up seven large baskets of leftover food. |
Now those who had eaten were four thousand men, besides women and children. | 38There were 4,000 men who were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children. |
After he sent the crowds away, he got into a boat and went to the region of Magadan. | 39Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan. |
