Mark 13
ISV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
As Jesus was leaving the Temple, one of his disciples told him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what beautiful buildings!"1And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!”
"Do you see these large buildings?" Jesus responded. "Not one stone here will be left on another that will not be torn down."2And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives facing the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew were asking him privately, 3And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,
"Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign when these things will be put into effect?"4“Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”
Jesus began to say to them, "See to it that no one deceives you. 5And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray.
Many will come in my name and say, 'I AM,' and they will deceive many people.6Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray.
But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, stop being alarmed. These things must take place, but the end hasn't come yet, 7And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet.
because nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes and famines in various places. These things are only the beginning of the birth pains."8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
"As for yourselves, be on your guard! People will hand you over to local councils, and you will be beaten in their synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings to testify to them because of me. 9“But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.
But first, the gospel must be proclaimed to all nations.10And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.
When they take you away and hand you over for trial, don't worry ahead of time about what you will say. Instead, say whatever is given to you at that time, because it won't be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 11And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 12And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated continuously by everyone because of my name. But the person who endures to the end will be saved."13And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
"So when you see the destructive desecration standing where it should not be (let the reader take note), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 14“But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
The one who is on his housetop must not come down and go into his house to take anything out of it, 15Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out,
and the one who's in the field must not turn back to get his coat.16and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.
"How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or who are nursing babies in those days! 17And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!
Pray that it may not be in winter, 18Pray that it may not happen in winter.
because those days will be a time of suffering, a kind that has not happened from the beginning of God's creation until now, and certainly will never happen again. 19For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be.
If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect whom he has chosen, he has shortened those days.20And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.
"At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!', or, 'Look! There he is!' don't believe it, 21And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.
because false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens to deceive, if possible, the elect. 22For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.
So be on your guard! I've told you everything before it happens."23But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.
"But after the suffering of those days, 'The sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light,24“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken loose.' 25and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
Then people will see 'the Son of Man coming in clouds' with great power and glory. 26And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
He'll send out his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven."27And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
"Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches become tender and it produces leaves, you know that summer is near. 28“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things taking place, you will know that the Son of Man is near, right at the door. 29So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.
I tell all of you with certainty, this generation will not disappear until all these things take place. 30Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear."31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
"No one knows when that day or hour will come —not the angels in heaven, not the Son, but only the Father. 32“But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Be careful! Watch out! Because you don't know when the time will come. 33Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.
It's like a man who went on a trip. As he left home, he put his servants in charge, each with his own work, and he ordered the doorkeeper to be alert. 34It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.
So keep on watching, because you don't know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, at three o'clock in the morning, or at dawn. 35Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—
Otherwise, he may come suddenly and find you asleep. 36lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.
I'm telling you what I'm telling everyone: Be alert!"37And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
