They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes.1On the other side of the sea, they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes.
When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him,2As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs.
and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain;3This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains.
because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.4Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him.
Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones.5Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.
Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;6When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him.
and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!"7And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!”
For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"8For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!”
And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many."9“What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country.10And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region.
Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain.11There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding.
The demons implored Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them."12So the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.”
Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.13He gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water.
Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened.14Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened.15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine.16Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs.
And they began to implore Him to leave their region.17And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region.
As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him.18As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.
And He did not let him, but He said to him, "Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you."19But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own people,” He said, “and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy He has shown you.”
And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.20So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.
When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore.21When Jesus had again crossed by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him beside the sea.
One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet22A synagogue leader named Jairus arrived, and seeing Jesus, he fell at His feet
and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live."23and pleaded with Him urgently, “My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.”
And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.
A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years,25And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years.
and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse--26She had borne much agony under the care of many physicians and had spent all she had, but to no avail. Instead, her condition had only grown worse.
after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.27When the woman heard about Jesus, she came up through the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.
For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well."28For she kept saying, “If only I touch His garments, I will be healed.”
Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.29Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?"30At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him. Turning to the crowd, He asked, “Who touched My garments?”
And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"31His disciples answered, “You can see the crowd pressing in on You, and yet You ask, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.32But He kept looking around to see who had done this.
But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.
And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction."34“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free of your affliction.”
While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?"35While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”
But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe."36But Jesus overheard their conversation and said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”
And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James.37And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
They came to the house of the synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing.38When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the people weeping and wailing loudly.
And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep."39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”
They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was.40And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside, He took the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and went in to see the child.
Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").41Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded.42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk around. She was twelve years old, and at once they were utterly astounded.
And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.43Then Jesus gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat.
