| 1He entered Jericho and was passing through. | 1Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. |
| 2And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. | 2A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. |
| 3Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. | 3He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. |
| 4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. | 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. |
| 5When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house." | 5When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." |
| 6And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly. | 6So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. |
| 7When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." | 7All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner." |
| 8Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much." | 8But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." |
| 9And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. | 9Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. |
| 10"For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." | 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." |
| 11While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. | 11While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. |
| 12So He said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. | 12He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. |
| 13"And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, 'Do business with this until I come back.' | 13So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.' |
| 14"But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' | 14"But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.' |
| 15"When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done. | 15"He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. |
| 16"The first appeared, saying, 'Master, your mina has made ten minas more.' | 16"The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' |
| 17"And he said to him, 'Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.' | 17"'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' |
| 18"The second came, saying, 'Your mina, master, has made five minas.' | 18"The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' |
| 19"And he said to him also, 'And you are to be over five cities.' | 19"His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' |
| 20"Another came, saying, 'Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; | 20"Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. |
| 21for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.' | 21I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' |
| 22"He said to him, 'By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? | 22"His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? |
| 23'Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?' | 23Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?' |
| 24"Then he said to the bystanders, 'Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' | 24"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.' |
| 25"And they said to him, 'Master, he has ten minas already.' | 25"'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!' |
| 26"I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. | 26"He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. |
| 27"But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence." | 27But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me.'" |
| 28After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. | 28After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. |
| 29When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, | 29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, |
| 30saying, "Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. | 30"Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. |
| 31"If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' you shall say, 'The Lord has need of it.'" | 31If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' say, 'The Lord needs it.'" |
| 32So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them. | 32Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. |
| 33As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?" | 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" |
| 34They said, "The Lord has need of it." | 34They replied, "The Lord needs it." |

| 37As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, | 37When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: |
| 38shouting: "BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" | 38"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" |
| 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples." | 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" |
| 40But Jesus answered, "I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!" | 40"I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." |

| 42saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. | 42and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. |
| 43"For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, | 43The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. |
| 44and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation." | 44They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you." |
| 45Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling, | 45When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. |
| 46saying to them, "It is written, 'AND MY HOUSE SHALL BE A HOUSE OF PRAYER,' but you have made it a ROBBERS' DEN." | 46"It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be a house of prayer'; but you have made it 'a den of robbers.'" |
| 47And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him, | 47Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. |
| 48and they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to every word He said. | 48Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words. |
