And He began to speak to them in parables: "A man PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT, AND DUG A VAT UNDER THE WINE PRESS AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey.1Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.
"At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive some of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers.2At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.
"They took him, and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.3But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
"Again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.4Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully.
"And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others.5He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.
"He had one more to send, a beloved son; he sent him last of all to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'6"He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
"But those vine-growers said to one another, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!'7"But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
"They took him, and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.8So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
"What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vine-growers, and will give the vineyard to others.9"What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.
"Have you not even read this Scripture: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;10Haven't you read this passage of Scripture: "'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES '?"11the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He spoke the parable against them. And so they left Him and went away.12Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.
Then they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Him in order to trap Him in a statement.13Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words.
They came and said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?14They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?
"Shall we pay or shall we not pay?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at."15Should we pay or shouldn't we?" But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."
They brought one. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" And they said to Him, "Caesar's."16They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose image is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied.
And Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at Him.17Then Jesus said to them, "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him.
Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying,18Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES and leaves behind a wife AND LEAVES NO CHILD, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.19"Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
"There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no children.20Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children.
"The second one married her, and died leaving behind no children; and the third likewise;21The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third.
and so all seven left no children. Last of all the woman died also.22In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too.
"In the resurrection, when they rise again, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her."23At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?"
Jesus said to them, "Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God?24Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
"For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
"But regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, and the God of Jacob '?26Now about the dead rising--have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
"He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken."27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!"
One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?"28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
Jesus answered, "The foremost is, 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD;29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'
"The second is this, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."
The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM;32"Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.
AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."33To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions.34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
And Jesus began to say, as He taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?
"David himself said in the Holy Spirit, 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET."'36David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."'
"David himself calls Him 'Lord'; so in what sense is He his son?" And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him.37David himself calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?" The large crowd listened to him with delight.
In His teaching He was saying: "Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like respectful greetings in the market places,38As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces,
and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,39and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation."40They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely."
And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.
A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent.42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.
for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on."44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on."
