I am the man who has experienced affliction from the rod of his wrath. 1I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God’s wrath.
He drove me into captivity and made me walk in darkness and not light. 2He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness instead of light.
He repeatedly attacks me, he turns his hand against me all day long. 3Indeed, He keeps turning His hand against me all day long.
He has made my mortal skin waste away; he has broken my bones. 4He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones.
He has besieged and surrounded me with bitter hardship. 5He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.
He has made me reside in deepest darkness like those who died long ago. 6He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages.
He has walled me in so that I cannot get out; he has weighted me down with heavy prison chains. 7He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains.
Also, when I cry out desperately for help, he has shut out my prayer. 8Even when I cry out and plead for help, He shuts out my prayer.
He has blocked every road I take with a wall of hewn stones; he has made every path impassable. 9He has barred my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked.
To me he is like a bear lying in ambush, like a hidden lion stalking its prey. 10He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding in ambush.
He has obstructed my paths and torn me to pieces; he has made me desolate. 11He forced me off my path and tore me to pieces; He left me without help.
He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrow. 12He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow.
He shot his arrows into my heart. 13He pierced my kidneys with His arrows.
I have become the laughingstock of all people, their mocking song all day long. 14I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song all day long.
He has given me my fill of bitter herbs and made me drunk with bitterness. 15He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me with wormwood.
He ground my teeth in gravel; he trampled me in the dust. 16He has ground my teeth with gravel and trampled me in the dust.
I am deprived of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is. 17My soul has been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is.
So I said, "My endurance has expired; I have lost all hope of deliverance from the LORD." 18So I say, “My strength has perished, along with my hope from the LORD.”
Remember my impoverished and homeless condition, which is a bitter poison. 19Remember my affliction and wandering, the wormwood and the gall.
I continually think about this, and I am depressed. 20Surely my soul remembers and is humbled within me.
But this I call to mind; therefore I have hope: 21Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope:
The LORD's loyal kindness never ceases; his compassions never end. 22Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail.
They are fresh every morning; your faithfulness is abundant! 23They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
"My portion is the Lord," I have said to myself, so I will put my hope in him. 24“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.”
The LORD is good to those who trust in him, to the one who seeks him. 25The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.
It is good to wait patiently for deliverance from the LORD. 26It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. 27It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is still young.
Let a person sit alone in silence, when the LORD is disciplining him. 28Let him sit alone in silence, for God has disciplined him.
Let him bury his face in the dust; perhaps there is hope. 29Let him bury his face in the dust—perhaps there is still hope.
Let him offer his cheek to the one who hits him; let him have his fill of insults. 30Let him offer his cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with reproach.
For the Lord will not reject us forever. 31For the Lord will not cast us off forever.
Though he causes us grief, he then has compassion on us according to the abundance of his loyal kindness. 32Even if He causes grief, He will show compassion according to His abundant loving devotion.
For he is not predisposed to afflict or to grieve people. 33For He does not willingly afflict or grieve the sons of men.
To crush underfoot all the earth's prisoners, 34To crush underfoot all the prisoners of the land,
to deprive a person of his rights in the presence of the Most High, 35to deny a man justice before the Most High,
to defraud a person in a lawsuit--the Lord does not approve of such things! 36to subvert a man in his lawsuit—of these the Lord does not approve.
Whose command was ever fulfilled unless the Lord decreed it? 37Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?
Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that everything comes--both calamity and blessing? 38Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High?
Why should any living person complain when punished for his sins? 39Why should any mortal man complain, in view of his sins?
Let us carefully examine our ways, and let us return to the LORD. 40Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.
Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven: 41Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:
"We have blatantly rebelled; you have not forgiven." 42“We have sinned and rebelled; You have not forgiven.”
You shrouded yourself with anger and then pursued us; you killed without mercy. 43You have covered Yourself in anger and pursued us; You have killed without pity.
You shrouded yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. 44You have covered Yourself with a cloud that no prayer can pass through.
You make us like filthy scum in the estimation of the nations. 45You have made us scum and refuse among the nations.
All our enemies have gloated over us; 46All our enemies open their mouths against us.
Panic and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction. 47Panic and pitfall have come upon us—devastation and destruction.
Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. 48Streams of tears flow from my eyes over the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Tears flow from my eyes and will not stop; there will be no break 49My eyes overflow unceasingly, without relief,
until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees what has happened. 50until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.
What my eyes see grieves me--all the suffering of the daughters in my city. 51My eyes bring grief to my soul because of all the daughters of my city.
For no good reason my enemies hunted me down like a bird. 52Without cause my enemies hunted me like a bird.
They shut me up in a pit and threw stones at me. 53They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.
The waters closed over my head; I thought I was about to die. 54The waters flowed over my head, and I thought I was going to die.
I have called on your name, O LORD, from the deepest pit. 55I called on Your name, O LORD, out of the depths of the Pit.
You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief!" 56You heard my plea: “Do not ignore my cry for relief.”
You came near on the day I called to you; you said, "Do not fear!" 57You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not be afraid.”
O Lord, you championed my cause, you redeemed my life. 58You defend my cause, O Lord; You redeem my life.
You have seen the wrong done to me, O LORD; pronounce judgment on my behalf! 59You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me; vindicate my cause!
You have seen all their vengeance, all their plots against me. 60You have seen all their malice, all their plots against me.
You have heard their taunts, O LORD, all their plots against me. 61O LORD, You have heard their insults, all their plots against me—
My assailants revile and conspire against me all day long. 62the slander and murmuring of my assailants against me all day long.
Watch them from morning to evening; I am the object of their mocking songs. 63When they sit and when they rise, see how they mock me in song.
Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, according to what they have done. 64You will pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, according to the work of their hands.
Give them a distraught heart; may your curse be on them! 65Put a veil of anguish over their hearts; may Your curse be upon them!
Pursue them in anger and eradicate them from under the LORD's heaven. 66You will pursue them in anger and exterminate them from under Your heavens, O LORD.
