1 These are the nations that the LORD left to test all the Israelites who had not known any of the wars in Canaan, Now these are the nations that the LORD left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan. Now these <i>are</i> the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, <i>even</i> as many <i>of Israel</i> as had not known all the wars of Canaan; Now these are the nations that the LORD left, to test Israel by them (<i>that is,</i> all <i>the Israelites</i> who had not experienced any of the wars of Canaan; These are the nations the LORD left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan
2 if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly: It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before. Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof; only in order that the generations of the sons of Israel might be taught war, those who had not experienced it previously). (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience):
3 the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath. These are the nations: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath. <i>Namely</i>, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath. <i>These nations are:</i> the five governors of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath. the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon to Lebo Hamath.
4 These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses. They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. They were <i>left</i> to test Israel by them, to find out if they would obey the commandments of the LORD, which He had commanded their fathers through Moses. They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the LORD’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.
5 Thus the Israelites continued to live among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites: The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
6 And they took the daughters of these people in marriage, gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods. And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods. 8 Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years. Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years. Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, so that He sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia; and the sons of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim for eight years. The anger of the LORD burned against Israel so that he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim, to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years.
9 But when the Israelites cried out to the LORD, He raised up Othniel son of Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz as a deliverer to save them. But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, <i>even</i> Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. But the sons of Israel cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to set them free, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, who saved them.
10 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him. The Spirit of the LORD was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim. And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went to war, the LORD handed over to him Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia, so that he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. The Spirit of the LORD came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.
11 So the land had rest for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died. So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died. And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died. Then the land was at rest for forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died. So the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
12 Once again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD. So He gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD. And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD. Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD. Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel.
13 After enlisting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join forces with him, Eglon attacked and defeated Israel, taking possession of the City of Palms. He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of the city of palms. And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees. And he gathered to himself the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and defeated Israel, and they took possession of the city of the palm trees. Getting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.
14 The Israelites served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years. And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. And the sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab for eighteen years. The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.
15 And again they cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed Benjamite, as their deliverer. So they sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Then the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab. But when the sons of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer—Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab.
16 Now Ehud had made for himself a double-edged sword a cubit long. He strapped it to his right thigh under his cloak And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his clothes. But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh. Now Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and he strapped it on his right thigh under his cloak. Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a cubit long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing.
17 and brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was an obese man. And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon <i>was</i> a very fat man. Then he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 After Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he ushered out those who had carried it. And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present. And it came about, when he had finished presenting the tribute, that <i>Ehud</i> sent away the people who had carried the tribute. After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it.
19 But upon reaching the idols near Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him. But he himself turned back at the idols near Gilgal and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he commanded, “Silence.” And all his attendants went out from his presence. But he himself turned again from the quarries that <i>were</i> by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him. But he himself turned back from the idols which were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And <i>the king</i> said, “Silence!” And all who were attending him left him. But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.” The king said to his attendants, “Leave us!” And they all left.
20 Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat. And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat. And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of <i>his</i> seat. Then Ehud came to him while he was sitting in his cool roof chamber alone. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he got up from his seat. Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace and said, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king rose from his seat,
21 And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon’s belly. And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly: Then Ehud reached out with his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly.
22 Even the handle sank in after the blade, and Eglon’s fat closed in over it, so that Ehud did not withdraw the sword from his belly. And Eglon’s bowels emptied. And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the dung came out. And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out. The hilt <i>of the sword</i> also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade because he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the refuse came out. Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it.
23 Then Ehud went out through the porch, closing and locking the doors of the upper room behind him. Then Ehud went out into the porch and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them. Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them. Then Ehud went out into the vestibule, and shut the doors of the roof chamber behind him, and locked <i>them.</i> Then Ehud went out to the porch; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.
24 After Ehud was gone, Eglon’s servants came in and found the doors of the upper room locked. “ He must be relieving himself in the cool room,” they said. When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, “Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.” When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour <i>were</i> locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber. When he had left, the king’s servants came and looked, and behold, the doors of the roof chamber were locked; and they said, “Undoubtedly he is relieving himself in the cool room.” After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, “He must be relieving himself in the inner room of the palace.”
25 So they waited until they became worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upper room. Then they took the key and opened the doors— and there was their lord lying dead on the floor. And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor. And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened <i>them</i>: and, behold, their lord <i>was</i> fallen down dead on the earth. So they waited until it would have been shameful <i>to wait longer;</i> but behold, he did not open the doors of the roof chamber. So they took the key and opened <i>them,</i> and behold, their master had fallen to the floor dead. They waited to the point of embarrassment, but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead.
26 Ehud, however, had escaped while the servants waited. He passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah. Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond the idols and escaped to Seirah. And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath. Now Ehud escaped while they were hesitating, and he passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah. While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah.
27 On arriving in Seirah, he blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hills, and he became their leader. When he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader. And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them. And when he arrived, he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he <i>was</i> leading them. When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.
28 “Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. And he said to them, “Follow after me, for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over. And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over. Then he said to them, “Pursue <i>them,</i> for the LORD has handed your enemies the Moabites over to you.” So they went down after him and took control of the crossing places of the Jordan opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross. “Follow me,” he ordered, “for the LORD has given Moab, your enemy, into your hands.” So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan that led to Moab; they allowed no one to cross over.
29 At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men. Not one of them escaped. And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped. And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man. They struck and killed about ten thousand Moabites at that time, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped. At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped.
30 So Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel that day, and the land had rest for eighty years. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years. So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was at rest for eighty years. That day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for eighty years.
31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. And he too saved Israel, striking down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel. And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel. Now after him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck and killed six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel. After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.
