And David took more wives in Jerusalem

Following his capture of Jerusalem, David strengthened his household as well as his kingdom. Multiple wives were customary among surrounding kings and often served political and dynastic purposes, though such marriages departed from God’s design for marriage in creation. David’s growing family would later bring rivalry, sin, and division within his house.

David’s children increased the size and influence of the royal family and established successors within his dynasty. Two Victories over the Philistines

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel,

David’s rule over the united tribes threatened Philistine control in the region. Israel had long suffered under Philistine pressure, and a strong king with David’s military reputation presented a serious challenge to their dominance.

2Sa 5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
2Sa 5:1-3 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron…
1Ch 11:1-3 Then all Israel came together to David at Hebron and said,…

they all went in search of him;

The Philistine rulers acted quickly to prevent David from strengthening his kingdom. Their united advance shows that they regarded his kingship as a political and military danger.

2Sa 5:18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out…
Psa 2:1-2 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?…
1Sa 23:1-2 Now it was reported to David, “Look, the Philistines…

but David learned of this

David received timely knowledge of their movement and was able to respond rather than be taken by surprise. His awareness reflects the careful leadership needed to secure Israel during this vulnerable transition.

2Sa 5:19 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up…
1Sa 23:4-5 Once again, David inquired of the LORD…
1Sa 30:7-8 Then David said to Abiathar the priest, …

and went out to face them.

David met the threat directly, taking responsibility as Israel’s newly anointed king. His willingness to confront the Philistines demonstrated the courage and faithfulness expected of the leader God had chosen.

2Sa 5:20 So David went to Baal-perazim, where he defeated…
2Sa 5:25 So David did as the LORD had commanded him,…
1Sa 17:48-50 As the Philistine started forward to attack him, David…

Now the Philistines had come

The Philistines, Israel’s longtime enemies along the coastal plain, moved against David soon after he was established as king over all Israel. Their advance challenged his rule and threatened the security of Jerusalem.

2Sa 5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
1Sa 13:5 Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel…
1Sa 17:1 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war…

and raided

Their incursion sought to plunder the land, disrupt Israel’s strength, and reassert Philistine control over the region. David faced a determined enemy with established military power.

1Sa 23:27-28 Then a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Come quickly…
1Sa 13:17 And raiders went out of the Philistine camp…
2Ch 28:18 The Philistines had also raided the cities…

the Valley of Rephaim.

This broad, strategic valley near Jerusalem gave the Philistines a position from which to threaten David’s new capital. Its occupation required a swift response to protect the kingdom.

2Sa 5:18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out…
2Sa 5:22 Once again the Philistines came up and spread out…
Isa 17:5 as the reaper gathers the standing grain…

So David inquired of God,

After the Philistines gathered against him in the Valley of Rephaim, David sought the Lord’s direction before acting. Unlike Saul, David did not rely on his own judgment when facing a national threat.

1Sa 23:2 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go and…
1Sa 30:8 David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders?”…

“Should I go up against the Philistines?

The Philistines remained Israel’s chief military enemy and moved quickly to challenge David after his establishment as king. David considered both the need for action and the timing of it under God’s authority.

2Sa 5:19 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up…
2Sa 5:23 So David inquired of the LORD, who answered…

Will You deliver them into my hand?”

David recognized that Israel’s strength alone could not secure victory. He asked whether the Lord would give the enemy into his control, placing the outcome of the battle in God’s hands.

1Sa 14:10 But if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up…
1Sa 17:46-47 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand.…

“Go,” replied the LORD,

The Lord answered David clearly, authorizing him to meet the Philistine force. David’s victory would come through obedience to God’s command rather than independent ambition.

1Sa 23:4 Once again, David inquired of the LORD…
Jos 1:2-3 Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise…

“for I will deliver them into your hand.”

God promised to defeat the Philistines through David. The victory that followed confirmed David’s rule and showed that the Lord defended His people against their enemies.

Jos 8:1 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid…
Jos 10:19 But you, do not stop there. Pursue your enemies…

So David and his men went up to Baal-perazim,

After David was established as king in Jerusalem, the Philistines moved into the Valley of Rephaim to challenge his rule. David led his forces to Baal-perazim, meaning “Lord of Breakthroughs,” a strategic area southwest of Jerusalem, after seeking the Lord’s direction.

2Sa 5:19 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up…
Isa 28:21 For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim.…

where he defeated the Philistines

Israel’s victory checked a serious Philistine threat near the new capital. David’s army prevailed, securing Jerusalem and strengthening his reign over the united tribes.

2Sa 8:1 Some time later, David defeated the Philistines…
1Sa 7:13 So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped invading…

and said, “Like a bursting flood, God has burst out against my enemies by my hand.”

David recognized that the victory came from God, though God had used him and his men in battle. The sudden force of the defeat resembled floodwaters breaking through a barrier and sweeping away resistance.

2Sa 5:20 So David went to Baal-perazim, where he defeated…
2Ch 20:15 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!…
Exo 14:14 The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

So they called that place Baal-perazim.

The name, meaning “Lord of Breakthroughs,” preserved the memory of God’s decisive intervention against Israel’s enemies.

1Sa 7:12 Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up.…
Gen 22:14 And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide.…

There the Philistines abandoned their gods,

The Philistines had carried their idols into battle, trusting them to bring protection and victory. Their retreat left these images behind, displaying the complete failure of their gods before David’s army.

2Sa 5:21 There the Philistines abandoned their idols, …
1Sa 5:2-4 carried it into the temple of Dagon,…
1Ch 10:10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods…

and David ordered that they be burned in the fire.

David destroyed the idols rather than keeping them as trophies or spoils. Their burning removed objects of false worship from the land and affirmed Israel’s allegiance to the Lord alone.

Deu 7:25 You must burn up the images of their gods; do not covet…
Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…
2Ki 23:4-6 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest…

Once again

The renewed invasion shows the Philistines’ continued effort to press Israel after David became king.

2Sa 5:22 Once again the Philistines came up and spread out…
2Sa 21:15 Once again the Philistines waged war against Israel…

the Philistines

Occupying the coastal plain west of Judah, they remained a powerful rival seeking to limit Israel’s growing strength.

2Sa 5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
1Sa 13:5 Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel…
1Sa 17:1 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war…

Their attack was intended to plunder the region and challenge David’s control.

1Sa 13:17 And raiders went out of the Philistine camp…
1Sa 13:18 another toward Beth-horon, and the third…

The Valley of Rephaim, southwest of Jerusalem, offered open ground suitable for Philistine military operations and had become a contested approach to the city.

2Sa 5:18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out…
Isa 17:5 as the reaper gathers the standing grain…

So David again inquired of God,

David did not presume that a previous victory guaranteed the same course of action in a new battle. As king, he sought the Lord’s direction before responding to the renewed Philistine threat.

1Sa 30:8 David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders?”…
1Sa 23:2 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go and…
2Sa 2:1 Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, …

who answered him,

God gave David clear instruction, showing His continuing care for Israel and His guidance of the king He had chosen.

2Sa 5:19 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up…
1Sa 23:4 Once again, David inquired of the LORD…
2Sa 21:1 During the reign of David there was a famine…

“Do not march up after them,

A direct assault was not God’s plan on this occasion. Israel’s victory would not rest on David’s military strength or experience.

2Sa 5:23 So David inquired of the LORD, who answered…
2Ch 20:15-17 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!…
Exo 14:13-14 But Moses told the people, “Do not be afraid.…

but circle around them

David was to move behind the Philistine position, approaching from an unexpected direction and avoiding a frontal engagement.

Jos 8:18-22 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Hold out your battle lance…
Jdg 7:19-22 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts…
2Ch 20:22 The moment they began their shouts and praises, the LORD…

and attack them in front of the balsam trees.

The balsam trees marked the appointed place of attack in the Valley of Rephaim. By following God’s command exactly, David would meet the Philistines where the Lord had determined to give Israel victory.

2Sa 5:24-25 As soon as you hear the sound of marching…
2Ki 7:6-7 For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound…
1Sa 14:15 Then panic struck the Philistines in the camp,…

As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees,

The sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees would signal that the Lord had begun to act against the Philistines. David was not to attack according to his own timing but to wait for God’s direction.

2Sa 5:24 As soon as you hear the sound of marching…
Ezk 1:24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings…
2Ki 7:6 For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound…

move out to battle,

David and his men were then to respond promptly in obedience, confident that the coming victory would not rest on Israel’s strength alone.

Jos 8:1 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid…
Jdg 7:9 That night the LORD said to Gideon, “Get up and go down…
1Sa 14:6 Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come…

because this will mean that God has gone out before you

The sound in the balsam trees would signal that the Lord had gone ahead of David, leading the way in battle and defending Israel against its enemies.

Deu 23:14 For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp…
Deu 20:4 For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you…
Exo 23:20 Behold, I am sending an angel before you to protect you…

to strike the camp of the Philistines.”

The Philistine force would be defeated because God had determined the outcome before David entered the battle.

2Sa 5:25 So David did as the LORD had commanded him,…
1Sa 17:50 Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling…
1Sa 7:10 As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel,…

So David did as God had commanded him,

David followed the battle plan God gave him rather than relying on his own judgment. His obedience marked a decisive contrast with Saul’s earlier refusal to carry out God’s command and established David’s reign under God’s direction.

Jos 11:15 As the LORD had commanded His servant Moses,…
Jos 1:7 Above all, be strong and very courageous.…
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

and they struck down the army of the Philistines

Israel’s forces defeated the Philistine army that had moved against David after his anointing as king. The victory showed that the Lord was securing David’s rule and breaking Philistine control over Israel.

1Ch 18:1 Some time later, David defeated the Philistines,…
1Sa 7:10-11 As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel,…

all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.

The pursuit covered a broad area from Gibeon near Jerusalem westward toward Gezer in the foothills. The extent of the defeat removed an immediate Philistine threat and strengthened Israel’s hold on the surrounding land.

2Sa 5:25 So David did as the LORD had commanded him,…
1Ch 20:4 Some time later, war broke out with the Philistines…
1Sa 17:52 Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward…

And David’s fame went out into every land,

David’s victories over the Philistines and other enemies established Israel as a significant power in the region. His renown spread beyond Israel’s borders, confirming God’s purpose to raise up David and secure his kingdom. The Tel Dan Stele’s reference to the house of David supports the historical recognition of David’s dynasty among neighboring peoples.

2Sa 8:13 And David made a name for himself when he returned…
1Ki 4:31 He was wiser than all men—wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite…
2Ch 26:8 The Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah,…

and the LORD caused all nations to fear him.

Israel’s enemies recognized that David’s success was not merely military strength but the Lord’s protection and blessing. Their fear restrained hostile nations and gave Israel stability during David’s reign. David’s rule, marked by security and victory, foreshadows the righteous reign of Christ, the greater Son of David.

Deu 2:25 This very day I will begin to put the dread and fear…
2Ch 20:29 And the fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the lands…
