The church is to seek God’s mercy and blessing for all people, including those in positions of authority. Isa 56:7 I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful… for kings and all those in authority— Christians were to pray even for Roman rulers, whose government could be unjust and hostile to the faith. Such prayer recognizes that civil authority remains under God’s rule and asks Him to restrain evil, grant wisdom, and preserve order. 1Pe 2:13-17 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human… so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives Peaceful conditions allow believers to worship, work, raise families, and proclaim the gospel without needless disruption or persecution. The aim is not withdrawal from society but stability in which the church may live faithfully. 1Th 4:11-12 and to aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own matters… in all godliness and dignity. A quiet life is to be marked by reverence toward God and conduct worthy of respect. Inner devotion and outward integrity together display the order and holiness expected of those who belong to Christ. 2Pe 3:11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way,… This is good Prayer, intercession, and thanksgiving for all people, including rulers and governing authorities, accord with God’s will. Such prayer reflects confidence that God rules over nations and desires peaceable conditions in which the gospel may advance. Mic 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good.… and pleasing God delights in faithful obedience offered from sincere hearts. The prayers commanded here are not empty religious acts but expressions of trust in God’s purpose and concern for human salvation. Eph 5:10 Test and prove what pleases the Lord. in the sight of God All prayer and conduct stand openly before God, who knows both outward actions and inward motives. His judgment is righteous and cannot be evaded by appearances. 2Co 2:17 For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God… our Savior, God is the Savior who delivered Israel and has provided final salvation through Jesus Christ. His saving purpose extends beyond one people or social class to all humanity. 1Ti 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God… who wants everyone to be saved God’s saving purpose extends to all people without distinction of nation, class, gender, or past sin. In a world divided by ethnicity and status, the gospel declared that Christ’s offer of mercy was not limited to one people or social rank. God’s desire for all to be saved does not mean all will be saved, but that salvation is genuinely offered to all through Jesus Christ. 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise… and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Salvation includes receiving and continuing in the truth God has revealed in Christ. The truth is not merely information but the gospel that identifies humanity’s sin, Christ’s saving work, and the call to faith and repentance. Believers are to grow in sound doctrine, resisting false teaching and living in accordance with the truth they have received. 2Ti 2:25 He must gently reprove those who oppose him,… For there is one God, Christianity stands on the belief that the God who revealed Himself to Israel is the only true God. In a world filled with pagan temples and competing deities, the church confessed that all people answer to one Creator and Judge. Jas 2:19 You believe that God is one. Good for you!… and there is one mediator between God and men, Sin separates humanity from God, and no priest, ruler, or religious system can remove that barrier. Earlier mediators in Israel’s history pointed beyond themselves to the need for a lasting representative who could bring sinful people before a holy God. Heb 12:24 Jesus the mediator of a new covenant… the man Christ Jesus, Jesus became truly human while remaining sinless, making Him able to represent mankind before God. As the promised Messiah, He alone reconciles God and man through His sacrificial death and resurrection. Rom 5:15 But the gift is not like the trespass… who gave Himself as a ransom for all— Jesus willingly offered His life to redeem humanity from sin and its penalty. His death fulfilled Isaiah’s portrait of the suffering Servant who bore the sins of many. The ransom was sufficient for all people, revealing God’s purpose to provide salvation without distinction, while its benefits are received by those who believe. Mat 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served… the testimony that was given Christ’s death and resurrection publicly revealed God’s plan of salvation. The apostles proclaimed this message as eyewitnesses, and the Holy Spirit confirmed their witness through the growth and endurance of the church. Jesus’ sacrifice stands at the center of the gospel and declares God’s provision for reconciliation with Himself. 1Co 1:6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. at just the right time. Christ came according to God’s appointed schedule. Under Roman rule, widespread roads, relative political order, and the common use of Greek enabled the gospel to travel rapidly across the Mediterranean world. His arrival also fulfilled God’s promises concerning the Messiah and demonstrated that redemption unfolded according to His sovereign purpose. Rom 5:6 For at just the right time, while we were still powerless… For this reason God’s desire that all people be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth required the Gospel to be proclaimed beyond Israel. 1Ti 1:16 But for this very reason I was shown mercy… I was appointed Paul’s ministry came by God’s calling, not by personal ambition or human approval. Act 9:15 “Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument… as a preacher, He was commissioned to publicly announce the good news of salvation through Christ. 1Co 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach… an apostle, The risen Jesus had sent Paul with divine authority to establish and strengthen churches through the Gospel. Gal 1:1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man,… and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. His particular assignment was to instruct the nations in the truth of Christ, bringing Gentiles into the people of God through faith. 2Ti 1:11 to which I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle,… I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything. Paul solemnly affirms the reality of his calling and mission, especially because his apostleship and work among the Gentiles were disputed by some. Rom 9:1 I speak the truth in Christ; I am not lying… Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, Paul directs Christian men everywhere to take responsibility for public and private prayer, a universal call transcending geographical and cultural boundaries. The instruction follows his call for prayers on behalf of all people, including rulers and those in authority. Prayer was a defining practice of the early church, whether believers gathered in homes or met together for worship. 1Th 5:17 Pray without ceasing. lifting up holy hands, Raised hands were a familiar posture of prayer and worship, expressing dependence on God and reverence before Him. Holiness in this setting includes a life and conscience not marked by open sin or hypocrisy. Those who lead in prayer are to approach God with sincerity and obedience. Psa 24:3-4 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand… without anger or dissension. Prayer is not to be joined with resentment, quarrels, or factional conflict. Anger and disputes damage fellowship and contradict the peace God desires among His people. Paul calls the church to seek God together with hearts free from hostility and division. Jas 1:19-20 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
Instructions to WomenWomen gathered for worship were to dress in a manner fitting for those who profess faith in Christ. Clothing should reflect dignity, humility, and reverence rather than status, sensuality, or a desire for attention. Pro 31:25 Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh… with modesty, Modesty governs both appearance and conduct. It reflects a proper awareness of God, others, and oneself, rejecting displays meant to provoke admiration or temptation. 1Pe 5:5 Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves… and with self-control, Self-control calls for restraint in personal presentation. Believers are not to be ruled by vanity, fashion, wealth, or social pressure, but by a settled commitment to honor God. Gal 5:23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things… not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, Elaborate hairstyles, jewelry, pearls, and costly garments were common marks of wealth and public display in the Roman world. The instruction forbids using appearance to advertise prosperity or seek distinction within the church, directing attention instead to godly character. 1Pe 3:3-4 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment,… but with good deeds, Christian women were to be recognized not by costly display or social status but by lives marked by service, purity, generosity, and faithfulness. Their conduct was to reflect genuine devotion to God. 1Pe 2:12 Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles… as is proper for women The standard was not the changing customs of the surrounding culture but behavior fitting for those who belong to God. Modesty and godliness were expressed in both appearance and conduct. Tit 2:3-5 Older women, likewise, are to be reverent in their behavior,… who profess to worship God. A public confession of faith carried the responsibility of a consistent life. Worship of God was shown not merely in gathered worship but in obedient conduct that honored Him. Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions… A woman must learn Women were to receive instruction in the faith alongside the gathered church, a significant responsibility in a setting where formal religious education was often centered on men. Learning was expected, not withheld. 1Co 14:35 If they wish to inquire about something,… in quietness Their learning was to take place in a peaceful, orderly manner that did not disrupt the teaching of the church. 1Co 14:34 Women are to be silent in the churches… and full submissiveness. They were to receive sound doctrine under the authority God had established in the congregation, with humility and respect for its teaching and order. 1Pe 3:1 Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your husbands,… I do not permit a woman to teach Paul gives Timothy instruction for the church at Ephesus, where sound doctrine required careful protection. Public teaching in the gathered church carried responsibility for instructing believers and guarding the faith, a duty entrusted to qualified men. Women were to receive biblical instruction and serve faithfully in many areas of church life, but not assume the teaching office over men. Tit 2:3-5 Older women, likewise, are to be reverent in their behavior,… or to exercise authority over a man; The order of the church recognizes distinct responsibilities for men and women. Authority in the congregation belongs to those appointed to oversee, teach, and protect the flock. Paul grounds this order in God’s design rather than local custom alone. 1Co 11:3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man… she is to remain quiet. This calls for a peaceful, teachable demeanor in the assembly, not disorderly interruption or the assumption of authority reserved for church leaders. The instruction preserves reverence, order, and clear accountability in public worship. 1Co 14:34-35 Women are to be silent in the churches… For Adam was formed first, God formed Adam from the dust before creating Eve, establishing the order recorded in Genesis. Paul appeals to this historical order to show that men and women were created with equal dignity yet distinct responsibilities. Adam’s priority in formation also corresponds to his representative headship, later fulfilled perfectly in Christ, the last Adam. Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground… and then Eve. God created Eve from Adam’s side as his fitting companion, sharing his human nature and appointed to stand beside him in marriage, signifying partnership and complementarity. Her later creation does not suggest lesser worth, but reflects God’s design for partnership, family, and order. Gen 2:21-22 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep,… And it was not Adam who was deceived, Adam knowingly disobeyed God’s command after Eve gave him the fruit. His sin was deliberate, and as the first man and head of the human race, his disobedience brought sin and death into the world. Gen 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely… but the woman who was deceived Eve was misled by the serpent’s challenge to God’s word and character. She believed the serpent’s promise that disobedience would bring wisdom and freedom rather than judgment. Gen 3:13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this… and fell into transgression. Having accepted the serpent’s lie, Eve ate from the forbidden tree and disobeyed God. The fall brought corruption, guilt, and death into human experience, revealing the need for redemption through Christ. Gen 3:6-7 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food… Women, however, will be saved through childbearing, Paul does not teach that motherhood earns eternal salvation, which comes through faith in Christ alone. In the setting of Genesis, Eve’s transgression brought judgment, yet God promised that the woman’s offspring would bring victory over the serpent. The birth of Christ through a woman fulfilled that promise. Childbearing also remains an honorable calling within God’s order, not a mark of inferiority or exclusion from His grace. Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman,… if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. Women who belong to Christ are to persevere in the marks of genuine faith: trust in God, love toward others, holy conduct, and disciplined lives. These qualities do not purchase salvation but show the continuing work of God in those He has saved. Col 1:23 if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com.
