Berean Study Bible The Hurtful TongueThe psalm was prepared for use in Israel’s public worship under the direction of the appointed musical leader. Its prayer of distress was meant to be sung or recited by the congregation as well as remembered by individuals facing danger. Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.… A Psalm of David. David wrote from a life marked by warfare, political opposition, and betrayal. As Israel’s king, he knew both the responsibility of leadership and the vulnerability of being pursued by enemies. Psa 3:1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.… Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; David brings his distress directly to God, trusting that the Lord hears the cries of His servants. His complaint is an honest appeal for help amid a real and threatening situation. Job 10:1 I loathe my own life; I will express my complaint… preserve my life from dread of the enemy. The danger has produced fear as well as outward risk. David asks God to guard him from the enemies who seek his harm and from the terror their threats create. Psa 140:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD,… Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, David asks God to shield him from enemies who secretly plan harm. His life was repeatedly threatened by men such as Saul’s followers and later by conspirators connected with Absalom’s rebellion. He looks to the Lord as his refuge when human strength and vigilance cannot expose every hidden plot. Psa 140:1-2 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD,… from the mob of workers of iniquity, The danger comes from an organized band of evildoers rather than a single opponent. Their united purpose makes them a greater threat, yet their plans remain under God’s judgment. David’s prayer recognizes that the Lord sees the counsel of the wicked and can preserve His servant from their violence. Psa 6:8 Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity,… who sharpen their tongues like swords Swords were instruments of war, prepared deliberately for attack. So too, the wicked prepare their speech to injure, using lies, slander, and accusations with calculated intent. Their words are not careless but formed to wound. Psa 57:4 My soul is among the lions; I lie down with ravenous beasts… and aim their bitter words like arrows, Arrows could strike an enemy from concealment and at a distance. Bitter speech likewise is directed toward a chosen target, carrying resentment and hostility. The image exposes the malice behind verbal attacks and the real damage they inflict. Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.… ambushing the innocent in seclusion, The wicked conceal their plans and target those who have given them no cause for harm. Their secrecy reveals both malice and cowardice, as they seek to injure the righteous where no help or defense is near. Pro 1:11-12 If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood…”… shooting suddenly, Their attack is deliberate but unexpected, like archers striking from concealment. The innocent are not warned or prepared, exposing the cruelty of those who use deception to accomplish violence. Psa 11:2 For behold, the wicked bend their bows.… without fear. They act boldly because they believe they will escape judgment. Their lack of restraint shows hearts hardened against God and indifferent to the suffering they cause. Psa 55:19 God will hear and humiliate them—the One enthroned… They hold fast to their evil purpose; The wicked deliberately strengthen one another in their plans, refusing correction and becoming more settled in rebellion against God. Mic 2:1 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds… they speak of hiding their snares. Their schemes are concealed and calculated, aimed at bringing down the innocent through deception, false accusation, or betrayal. Psa 140:5 The proud hide a snare for me; the cords of their net… “Who will see them?” they say. They act as though their secrecy places them beyond judgment, ignoring that God sees every hidden act and will hold evildoers accountable. Isa 29:15 Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD.… They devise injustice and say, Wickedness begins with deliberate counsel rather than sudden impulse. Their plans are formed in opposition to God’s order and are often directed against the innocent, the righteous, or those who stand in their way. Mic 2:1 Woe to those who devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds… “We have perfected a secret plan.” They take pride in the concealment and apparent success of their conspiracy. Like other plots against God’s servants in Israel’s history, their confidence rests on secrecy and human cunning, yet no plan is hidden from the Lord. Isa 29:15 Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD.… For the inner man and the heart are mysterious. Human motives are deep and often concealed even from others. God alone fully searches the heart, exposing the evil purposes that lie beneath carefully constructed words and actions. Pro 20:5 The intentions of a man’s heart are deep waters… But God will shoot them with arrows; God answers the secret plots of the wicked with direct and certain judgment. Their schemes against the righteous do not escape His notice, and He acts as the divine warrior who defends His people and brings evil to account. Deu 32:23 I will heap disasters upon them; I will spend My arrows… suddenly they will be wounded. The downfall of the wicked comes when they believe themselves secure. God’s judgment overturns their plans swiftly, exposing the consequences of their rebellion and proving that no enemy can finally prevail against Him. Psa 73:19 How suddenly they are laid waste, completely swept away… They will be made to stumble, God brings the wicked down by overturning their schemes. Their rebellion does not escape His judgment, and the harm they intended for others becomes the cause of their own ruin. Isa 8:15 Many will stumble over these; they will fall and be broken;… their own tongues turned against them. Their deceitful words expose them and bring condemnation upon them. The lies, slander, and threats they used against the righteous become evidence of their guilt before God. Pro 6:2 if you have been trapped by the words of your lips… All who see will shake their heads. Their downfall becomes publicly known and recognized as the just result of opposing God. Those who witness it respond with astonishment and contempt, seeing that the wicked have been defeated by the very evil they devised. Psa 22:7 All who see me mock me; they sneer and shake their heads: Then all mankind will fear God’s decisive judgment on the wicked causes people everywhere to recognize His power and righteousness. Such fear includes reverence before the holy Judge who defends the innocent and exposes evil. Psa 67:7 God blesses us, that all the ends of the earth… and proclaim the work of God; His acts cannot remain hidden. Psa 105:1-2 Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name;… so they will ponder what He has done. God’s works call people to ponder, with deep reflection and consideration, His character, His rule over human affairs, and the certainty that He sees and judges every deed. Psa 77:12 I will reflect on all You have done and ponder… Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD God’s judgment on the wicked brings vindication to those who fear Him. Their joy rests in the Lord’s righteousness, faithfulness, and sovereign rule rather than in favorable circumstances. Psa 97:12 Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous ones,… and take refuge in Him; The Lord is a secure shelter for His people amid danger, opposition, and injustice. David’s experience of deliverance from enemies reflects the safety God provides to those who trust Him. Psa 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish… let all the upright in heart exult. Those whose hearts are devoted to God rejoice openly when His justice is revealed. Their celebration recognizes that the Lord sees hidden evil, defends His servants, and acts rightly in all He does.
