Isaiah 27
1. The Deliverance of Israel

I, the LORD, am its keeper;
This phrase emphasizes God's role as the protector and caretaker of His people, often symbolized as a vineyard. The imagery of God as a keeper is consistent with the biblical theme of God as a shepherd (Psalm 23:1) and a gardener (John 15:1). The vineyard represents Israel, and God's personal involvement signifies His commitment to their well-being. This reflects the covenant relationship where God promises to be with His people, guiding and protecting them.

I water it continually.
Watering symbolizes sustenance and blessing, essential for growth and fruitfulness. In the arid climate of the Middle East, water is a precious resource, and its provision indicates God's abundant grace and provision. This can be connected to the spiritual nourishment God provides through His Word and Spirit (John 4:14, Ephesians 5:26). The continual aspect underscores God's unceasing care and faithfulness, ensuring that His people are spiritually nourished and sustained.

I guard it night and day
The phrase highlights God's constant vigilance and protection over His people. The mention of both night and day indicates a 24/7 watchfulness, suggesting that there is never a moment when God is not attentive to the needs and safety of His vineyard. This can be related to Psalm 121:4, which states that God neither slumbers nor sleeps. It reassures believers of God's omnipresence and His role as a divine protector against spiritual and physical threats.

so no one can disturb it;
This part of the verse assures that God’s protection is effective against any potential harm or disturbance. The vineyard, representing God's people, is safeguarded from enemies and destructive forces. This can be seen as a promise of peace and security, echoing the protection God offers against spiritual adversaries (Ephesians 6:11-12). It also reflects the eschatological hope of ultimate peace and security in God's kingdom, where His people will dwell in safety (Revelation 21:4).

Persons / Places / Events

The covenant-keeping God of Israel, who is portrayed as the vigilant and nurturing keeper of His vineyard.

Symbolically represents Israel, God's chosen people, whom He tends and protects.

3. Isaiah
The prophet through whom God delivers this message, providing hope and assurance to the people of Israel.

4. Israel
The nation chosen by God, often depicted as a vineyard in the Old Testament, which God promises to protect and nurture.

5. Enemies/Disturbers

Teaching Points
God's Faithful Protection
Just as God promises to guard His vineyard, He is faithful to protect and sustain His people today. We can trust in His constant vigilance over our lives.

Continuous Nurturing
The imagery of God watering the vineyard continually reminds us of His provision and care. We should seek to remain connected to Him, the source of our spiritual nourishment.

Vigilance Against Disturbance
God’s guarding of the vineyard night and day highlights the importance of spiritual vigilance. We must be aware of spiritual threats and rely on God’s protection.

Covenant Relationship
The relationship between God and Israel as depicted in the vineyard metaphor underscores the importance of maintaining our covenant relationship with God through faith and obedience.(3) I the Lord do keep it.--The words imply a distinct reversal of the sentence passed in Isaiah 5:1-7. Instead of abandonment, there is constant care. Instead of the clouds being commanded to give no rain, the vineyard is watered whenever it requires watering. Instead of being wasted by the wild boar or by spoilers, Jehovah tends it both by day and night.

Verse 3. - I the Lord do keep it; or, guard it (comp. Isaiah 26:3; Isaiah 42:6; Isaiah 49:8; Psalm 121:5). Vineyards were considered to require special watching, since they were liable to damage both from thieves and foxes (Song of Solomon 2:15). It was usual to build towers in them, from which a watch could be kept (Isaiah 5:2; Matthew 21:33). I will water it every moment (compare the threat in Isaiah 5:6, "I will command my clouds that they rain no rain upon it"). The Church needs and receives "the continual dew of God's blessing."
