Josiah Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 34:1–2)

1  בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁמֹנֶ֤ה (of eight) שָׁנָה֙ (years) יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ (Josiah was) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (and thirty) וְאַחַת֙ (and one) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) יְדִידָ֥ה (was Jedidah) בַת־ (daughter) עֲדָ֖יָה (of Adaiah) מִבָּצְקַֽת׃ (of Bozkath). 2  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הַיָּשָׁ֖ר (right) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ (and walked) בְּכָל־ (in all) דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (the ways) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) אָבִ֔יו (his father), וְלֹא־ (and not) סָ֖ר (he did turn aside) יָמִ֥ין (to the right hand) וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃פ (or to the left).

Funding the Temple Repairs
(2 Chronicles 34:8–13)

3  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) בִּשְׁמֹנֶ֤ה (in eight) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and tenth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year) לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of king) יֹאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ (Josiah), שָׁלַ֣ח (that sent) הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ (the King) אֶת־ (-) שָׁפָ֨ן (Shaphan) בֶּן־ (son) אֲצַלְיָ֤הוּ (of Azaliah) בֶן־ (son) מְשֻׁלָּם֙ (of Meshullam), הַסֹּפֵ֔ר (the scribe), בֵּ֥ית (to the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 4  עֲלֵ֗ה (Go up) אֶל־ (to) חִלְקִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Hilkiah) הַכֹּהֵ֣ן (the priest) הַגָּד֔וֹל (high), וְיַתֵּ֣ם (and he will completely count) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֔סֶף (the silver) הַמּוּבָ֖א (that was brought) בֵּ֣ית (into the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) אָסְפ֛וּ (have gathered) שֹׁמְרֵ֥י (the keepers) הַסַּ֖ף (of the threshold) מֵאֵ֥ת (from) הָעָֽם׃ (the people). 5  וְיִתְּנֹה (And let them deliver it) עַל־ (into) יַד֙ (the hand) עֹשֵׂ֣י (of those doing) הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה (the work), הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים (who are the overseers) בְּבֵית (in the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְיִתְּנ֣וּ (and let them give) אֹת֗וֹ (it) לְעֹשֵׂ֤י (to those doing) הַמְּלָאכָה֙ (the work) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that is) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), לְחַזֵּ֖ק (to repair) בֶּ֥דֶק (the damage) הַבָּֽיִת׃ (of the house), 6  לֶחָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים (to the carpenters), וְלַבֹּנִ֖ים (and to the builders), וְלַגֹּֽדְרִ֑ים (and to the masons), וְלִקְנ֤וֹת (and to buy) עֵצִים֙ (timber) וְאַבְנֵ֣י (and stone) מַחְצֵ֔ב (hewn) לְחַזֵּ֖ק (to strengthen) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּֽיִת׃ (the house). 7  אַ֚ךְ (However) לֹא־ (not) יֵחָשֵׁ֣ב (there need be accounting made) אִתָּ֔ם (with them) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (of the silver) הַנִּתָּ֣ן (delivered) עַל־ (into) יָדָ֑ם (their hands), כִּ֥י (because) בֶאֱמוּנָ֖ה (with faithfulness) הֵ֥ם (they) עֹשִֽׂים׃ (work).

Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law
(2 Chronicles 34:14–21)

8  וַ֠יֹּאמֶר (And said) חִלְקִיָּ֜הוּ (Hilkiah) הַכֹּהֵ֤ן (the priest) הַגָּדוֹל֙ (high) עַל־ (to) שָׁפָ֣ן (Shaphan) הַסֹּפֵ֔ר (the scribe), סֵ֧פֶר (The book) הַתּוֹרָ֛ה (of the Law) מָצָ֖אתִי (I have found) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And gave) חִלְקִיָּ֧ה (Hilkiah) אֶת־ (-) הַסֵּ֛פֶר (the Book) אֶל־ (to) שָׁפָ֖ן (Shaphan), וַיִּקְרָאֵֽהוּ׃ (and he read it).

9  וַיָּבֹ֞א (And went) שָׁפָ֤ן (Shaphan) הַסֹּפֵר֙ (the scribe) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), וַיָּ֥שֶׁב (and brought back) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) דָּבָ֑ר (word) וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), הִתִּ֤יכוּ (Have gathered) עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ (Your servants) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ (the silver) הַנִּמְצָ֣א (found) בַבַּ֔יִת (in the house), וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֗הוּ (and they have delivered it) עַל־ (into) יַד֙ (the hand) עֹשֵׂ֣י (of those who do) הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה (the work), הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים (who oversee) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

10  וַיַּגֵּ֞ד (And declared) שָׁפָ֤ן (Shaphan) הַסֹּפֵר֙ (the scribe) לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (to the king), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), סֵ֚פֶר (A book) נָ֣תַן (has given) לִ֔י (to me) חִלְקִיָּ֖ה (Hilkiah) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest). וַיִּקְרָאֵ֥הוּ (And read it) שָׁפָ֖ן (Shaphan) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king).

11  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ (when heard) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֖י (the words) סֵ֣פֶר (of the Book) הַתּוֹרָ֑ה (of the Law), וַיִּקְרַ֖ע (that he tore) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדָֽיו׃ (his garments). 12  וַיְצַ֣ו (And commanded) הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) חִלְקִיָּ֣ה (Hilkiah) הַכֹּהֵ֡ן (the priest), וְאֶת־ (and) אֲחִיקָ֣ם (Ahikam) בֶּן־ (son) שָׁ֠פָן (of Shaphan), וְאֶת־ (and) עַכְבּ֨וֹר (Achbor) בֶּן־ (son) מִיכָיָ֜ה (of Micaiah), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) שָׁפָ֣ן (Shaphan) הַסֹּפֵ֗ר (the scribe), וְאֵ֛ת (and) עֲשָׂיָ֥ה (Asaiah) עֶֽבֶד־ (servant) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying): 13  לְכוּ֩ (Go), דִרְשׁ֨וּ (inquire) אֶת־ (of) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) בַּעֲדִ֣י (for me) וּבְעַד־ (and for) הָעָ֗ם (the people), וּבְעַד֙ (and for) כָּל־ (all) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah), עַל־ (concerning) דִּבְרֵ֛י (the words) הַסֵּ֥פֶר (of the book) הַנִּמְצָ֖א (that has been found) הַזֶּ֑ה (this), כִּֽי־ (for) גְדוֹלָ֞ה (great) חֲמַ֣ת (is the wrath) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הִיא֙ (is) נִצְּתָ֣ה (aroused) בָ֔נוּ (against us), עַל֩ (upon) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) שָׁמְע֜וּ (have listened) אֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ (our fathers) עַל־ (to) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the words) הַסֵּ֣פֶר (of the book) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת (to do) כְּכָל־ (according to all) הַכָּת֥וּב (that is written) עָלֵֽינוּ׃ (about us).

Huldah’s Prophecy
(2 Chronicles 34:22–28)

14  וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) חִלְקִיָּ֣הוּ (Hilkiah) הַ֠כֹּהֵן (the priest), וַאֲחִיקָ֨ם (and Ahikam), וְעַכְבּ֜וֹר (and Achbor), וְשָׁפָ֣ן (and Shaphan), וַעֲשָׂיָ֗ה (and Asaiah), אֶל־ (to) חֻלְדָּ֨ה (Huldah) הַנְּבִיאָ֜ה (the prophetess) אֵ֣שֶׁת׀ (the wife) שַׁלֻּ֣ם (of Shallum) בֶּן־ (son) תִּקְוָ֗ה (of Tikvah), בֶּן־ (son) חַרְחַס֙ (of Harhas) שֹׁמֵ֣ר (keeper) הַבְּגָדִ֔ים (of the garments). וְהִ֛יא (And she) יֹשֶׁ֥בֶת (dwelt) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (in Jerusalem) בַּמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה (in the Mishneh), וַֽיְדַבְּר֖וּ (and they spoke) אֵלֶֽיהָ׃ (with her).

15  וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (And she said) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֥ר (says) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), אִמְר֣וּ (Say) לָאִ֔ישׁ (to the man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) שָׁלַ֥ח (sent) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) אֵלָֽי׃ (to Me), 16  כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH): הִנְנִ֨י (Behold) מֵבִ֥יא (I will bring) רָעָ֛ה (calamity) אֶל־ (on) הַמָּק֥וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) וְעַל־ (and on) יֹֽשְׁבָ֑יו (its dwellers) אֵ֚ת (-)— כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵ֣י (the words) הַסֵּ֔פֶר (of the book) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) קָרָ֖א (has read) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah), 17  תַּ֣חַת׀ (because) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עֲזָב֗וּנִי (they have forsaken Me) וַֽיְקַטְּרוּ֙ (and burned incense) לֵאלֹהִ֣ים (to gods) אֲחֵרִ֔ים (other), לְמַ֙עַן֙ (in order) הַכְעִיסֵ֔נִי (to provoke Me to anger) בְּכֹ֖ל (with all) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the works) יְדֵיהֶ֑ם (of their hands). וְנִצְּתָ֧ה (And will be kindled) חֲמָתִ֛י (My wrath) בַּמָּק֥וֹם (against the place) הַזֶּ֖ה (this), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִכְבֶּֽה׃ (shall be quenched).

18  וְאֶל־ (And as for) מֶ֣לֶךְ (the king) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah) הַשֹּׁלֵ֤חַ (who sent) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) לִדְרֹ֣שׁ (to inquire of) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), כֹּ֥ה (in this manner) תֹאמְר֖וּ (you⁺ shall speak) אֵלָ֑יו (to him): כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֤ר (says) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel): הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (The words) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) שָׁמָֽעְתָּ׃ (you have heard)— 19  יַ֠עַן (because) רַךְ־ (was tender) לְבָ֨בְךָ֜ (your heart) וַתִּכָּנַ֣ע׀ (and you humbled yourself) מִפְּנֵ֣י (before) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) בְּֽשָׁמְעֲךָ֡ (when you heard) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (what) דִּבַּרְתִּי֩ (I spoke) עַל־ (against) הַמָּק֨וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) וְעַל־ (and against) יֹשְׁבָ֗יו (its dwellers), לִהְי֤וֹת (that they would become) לְשַׁמָּה֙ (a desolation) וְלִקְלָלָ֔ה (and a curse), וַתִּקְרַע֙ (and you tore) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדֶ֔יךָ (your clothes) וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה (and wept) לְפָנָ֑י (before Me), וְגַ֧ם (and also) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי (have heard) נְאֻם־ (the declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

20  לָכֵן֩ (Therefore) הִנְנִ֨י (behold), אֹֽסִפְךָ֜ (I will gather you) עַל־ (to) אֲבֹתֶ֗יךָ (your fathers), וְנֶאֱסַפְתָּ֣ (and you shall be gathered) אֶל־ (to) קִבְרֹתֶיךָ֮ (your grave) בְּשָׁלוֹם֒ (in peace). וְלֹא־ (And not) תִרְאֶ֣ינָה (shall see) עֵינֶ֔יךָ (your eyes) בְּכֹל֙ (all) הָֽרָעָ֔ה (the calamity) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I) מֵבִ֖יא (will bring) עַל־ (on) הַמָּק֣וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֑ה (this).

וַיָּשִׁ֥יבוּ (And they brought back) אֶת־ (her) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (to the king) דָּבָֽר׃ (word).
