Mordecai Is Honored

1  בַּלַּ֣יְלָה (On the night) הַה֔וּא (that) נָדְדָ֖ה (fled away) שְׁנַ֣ת (the sleep) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and he said) לְהָבִ֞יא (to bring) אֶת־ (-) סֵ֤פֶר (the Book) הַזִּכְרֹנוֹת֙ (of the Records), דִּבְרֵ֣י (of Events) הַיָּמִ֔ים (of the Days), וַיִּהְי֥וּ (and they were) נִקְרָאִ֖ים (called out) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king). 2  וַיִּמָּצֵ֣א (And it was found) כָת֗וּב (written) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) הִגִּ֨יד (had declared) מָרְדֳּכַ֜י (Mordecai) עַל־ (concerning) בִּגְתָ֣נָא (Bigthan) וָתֶ֗רֶשׁ (and Teresh), שְׁנֵי֙ (two) סָרִיסֵ֣י (eunuchs) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king) מִשֹּׁמְרֵ֖י (from the keepers) הַסַּ֑ף (of the threshold) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) בִּקְשׁוּ֙ (sought) לִשְׁלֹ֣חַ (to stretch out) יָ֔ד (a hand) בַּמֶּ֖לֶךְ (against King) אֲחַשְׁוֵרֽוֹשׁ׃ (Ahasuerus).

3  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), מַֽה־ (What) נַּעֲשָׂ֞ה (has been done), יְקָ֧ר (honor) וּגְדוּלָּ֛ה (and greatness), לְמָרְדֳּכַ֖י (for Mordecai) עַל־ (over) זֶ֑ה (this)?

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ (And said) נַעֲרֵ֤י (the young men) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) מְשָׁ֣רְתָ֔יו (who attended him) לֹא־ (Not) נַעֲשָׂ֥ה (has been done) עִמּ֖וֹ (with him) דָּבָֽר׃ (a thing).

4  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king), מִ֣י (Who) בֶחָצֵ֑ר (is in the court)?

וְהָמָ֣ן (And Haman) בָּ֗א (had come) לַחֲצַ֤ר (into the court) בֵּית־ (of the house) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) הַחִ֣יצוֹנָ֔ה (outer) לֵאמֹ֣ר (to say) לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (to the king) לִתְלוֹת֙ (to hang) אֶֽת־ (-) מָרְדֳּכַ֔י (Mordecai) עַל־ (on) הָעֵ֖ץ (the tree) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הֵכִ֥ין (he had prepared) לֽוֹ׃ (for him). 5  וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ (And said) נַעֲרֵ֤י (the young men) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), הָמָ֖ן (Haman) עֹמֵ֣ד (is standing) בֶּחָצֵ֑ר (in the court).

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king), יָבֽוֹא׃ (Let him come in).

6  וַיָּבוֹא֮ (And came in) הָמָן֒ (Haman), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) לוֹ֙ (to him) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), מַה־ (What) לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת (is to be done) בָּאִ֕ישׁ (for the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) חָפֵ֣ץ (delights) בִּיקָר֑וֹ (to honor)?

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) הָמָן֙ (Haman) בְּלִבּ֔וֹ (in his heart), לְמִ֞י (For whom) יַחְפֹּ֥ץ (would delight) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) יְקָ֖ר (honor) יוֹתֵ֥ר (more) מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ (than me).

7  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) הָמָ֖ן (Haman) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), אִ֕ישׁ (The man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) חָפֵ֥ץ (delights) בִּיקָרֽוֹ׃ (to honor) 8  יָבִ֙יאוּ֙ (let them bring) לְב֣וּשׁ (a garment) מַלְכ֔וּת (of royalty) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לָֽבַשׁ־ (has clothed) בּ֖וֹ (himself) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), וְס֗וּס (and a horse) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) רָכַ֤ב (has ridden) עָלָיו֙ (upon it) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and that) נִתַּ֛ן (has been given) כֶּ֥תֶר (a crown) מַלְכ֖וּת (of royalty) בְּרֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ (on its head), 9  וְנָת֨וֹן (and let be given) הַלְּב֜וּשׁ (the garment) וְהַסּ֗וּס (and the horse) עַל־ (upon) יַד־ (the hand) אִ֞ישׁ (of a man) מִשָּׂרֵ֤י (from officials) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) הַֽפַּרְתְּמִ֔ים (the nobles), וְהִלְבִּ֙ישׁוּ֙ (and let them clothe) אֶת־ (-) הָאִ֔ישׁ (the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) חָפֵ֣ץ (delights) בִּֽיקָר֑וֹ (to honor) וְהִרְכִּיבֻ֤הוּ (and have him ride) עַל־ (on) הַסּוּס֙ (the horse) בִּרְח֣וֹב (in the open square) הָעִ֔יר (of the city) וְקָרְא֣וּ (and let them call out) לְפָנָ֔יו (before his face), כָּ֚כָה (Thus) יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה (shall it be done) לָאִ֔ישׁ (for the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) חָפֵ֥ץ (delights) בִּיקָרֽוֹ׃ (to honor).

10  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) לְהָמָ֗ן (to Haman), מַ֠הֵר (Hurry), קַ֣ח (take) אֶת־ (-) הַלְּב֤וּשׁ (the garment) וְאֶת־ (and) הַסּוּס֙ (the horse) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) דִּבַּ֔רְתָּ (you have spoken), וַֽעֲשֵׂה־ (and do) כֵן֙ (so) לְמָרְדֳּכַ֣י (for Mordecai) הַיְּהוּדִ֔י (the Jew) הַיּוֹשֵׁ֖ב (the one sitting) בְּשַׁ֣עַר (at the gate) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king). אַל־ (Not) תַּפֵּ֣ל (shall you let fall) דָּבָ֔ר (a word) מִכֹּ֖ל (from all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃ (you have spoken).

11  וַיִּקַּ֤ח (And took) הָמָן֙ (Haman) אֶת־ (-) הַלְּב֣וּשׁ (the garment) וְאֶת־ (and) הַסּ֔וּס (the horse) וַיַּלְבֵּ֖שׁ (and he clothed) אֶֽת־ (-) מָרְדֳּכָ֑י (Mordecai), וַיַּרְכִּיבֵ֙הוּ֙ (and he led him) בִּרְח֣וֹב (in the open square) הָעִ֔יר (of the city) וַיִּקְרָ֣א (and he called out) לְפָנָ֔יו (before his face), כָּ֚כָה (Thus) יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה (shall it be done) לָאִ֔ישׁ (from the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) חָפֵ֥ץ (delights) בִּיקָרֽוֹ׃ (to honor)!

12  וַיָּ֥שָׁב (And returned) מָרְדֳּכַ֖י (Mordecai) אֶל־ (to) שַׁ֣עַר (the gate) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king), וְהָמָן֙ (and Haman) נִדְחַ֣ף (hurried) אֶל־ (to) בֵּית֔וֹ (his house) אָבֵ֖ל (mourning) וַחֲפ֥וּי (and covered) רֹֽאשׁ׃ (his head).

13  וַיְסַפֵּ֨ר (And recounted) הָמָ֜ן (Haman) לְזֶ֤רֶשׁ (to Zeresh) אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ (his wife) וּלְכָל־ (and to all) אֹ֣הֲבָ֔יו (his loved ones) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) קָרָ֑הוּ (had happened to him). וַיֹּ֩אמְרוּ֩ (And said) ל֨וֹ (to him) חֲכָמָ֜יו (his wise men) וְזֶ֣רֶשׁ (and Zeresh) אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ (his wife), אִ֣ם (If) מִזֶּ֣רַע (from the seed) הַיְּהוּדִ֡ים (of the Jews) מָרְדֳּכַ֞י (is Mordecai) אֲשֶׁר֩ (whom) הַחִלּ֨וֹתָ (you have begun) לִנְפֹּ֤ל (before his face) לְפָנָיו֙ (before him), לֹא־ (not) תוּכַ֣ל (you will prevail) ל֔וֹ (against him), כִּֽי־ (but) נָפ֥וֹל (falling) תִּפּ֖וֹל (you will fall) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before his face).

14  עוֹדָם֙ (They were still) מְדַבְּרִ֣ים (speaking) עִמּ֔וֹ (with him), וְסָרִיסֵ֥י (and the eunuchs) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of the king) הִגִּ֑יעוּ (arrived) וַיַּבְהִ֙לוּ֙ (and they hastened) לְהָבִ֣יא (to bring) אֶת־ (-) הָמָ֔ן (Haman) אֶל־ (to) הַמִּשְׁתֶּ֖ה (the feast) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) עָשְׂתָ֥ה (had made) אֶסְתֵּֽר׃ (Esther).
