Ezekiel Eats the Scroll
(Revelation 10:1–11)

1  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) תִּמְצָ֖א (you find), אֱכ֑וֹל (you must eat). אֱכוֹל֙ (Eat) אֶת־ (-) הַמְּגִלָּ֣ה (the scroll) הַזֹּ֔את (this), וְלֵ֥ךְ (and go) דַּבֵּ֖ר (speak) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

2  וָאֶפְתַּ֖ח (And I opened) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֑י (my mouth), וַיַּ֣אֲכִלֵ֔נִי (and He caused me to eat) אֵ֖ת (-) הַמְּגִלָּ֥ה (the scroll) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this).

3  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) אֵלַ֗י (to me) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָם֙ (of man), בִּטְנְךָ֤ (your belly) תַֽאֲכֵל֙ (feed), וּמֵעֶ֣יךָ (and your bowels) תְמַלֵּ֔א (fill) אֵ֚ת (with) הַמְּגִלָּ֣ה (the scroll) הַזֹּ֔את (this) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אֲנִ֖י (I) נֹתֵ֣ן (am giving) אֵלֶ֑יךָ (to you)

וָאֹ֣כְלָ֔ה (and I ate) וַתְּהִ֥י (and it was) בְּפִ֖י (in my mouth) כִּדְבַ֥שׁ (as honey) לְמָתֽוֹק׃פ (as sweet).

4  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And He said) אֵלָ֑י (to me) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), לֶךְ־ (go), בֹּא֙ (come) אֶל־ (into) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וְדִבַּרְתָּ֥ (and speak) בִדְבָרַ֖י (with My words) אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (to them). 5  כִּ֡י (For) לֹא֩ (not) אֶל־ (to) עַ֨ם (a people) עִמְקֵ֥י (unfathomable) שָׂפָ֛ה (of speech) וְכִבְדֵ֥י (and heay) לָשׁ֖וֹן (of tongue), אַתָּ֣ה (you) שָׁל֑וּחַ (are being sent) אֶל־ (but to) בֵּ֖ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel); 6  לֹ֣א׀ (not) אֶל־ (to) עַמִּ֣ים (peoples) רַבִּ֗ים (many) עִמְקֵ֤י (unfathomable) שָׂפָה֙ (of speech) וְכִבְדֵ֣י (and heavy) לָשׁ֔וֹן (of tongue), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whose) לֹֽא־ (not) תִשְׁמַ֖ע (you can understand). דִּבְרֵיהֶ֑ם (Words) אִם־ (if) לֹ֤א (not) אֲלֵיהֶם֙ (to them) שְׁלַחְתִּ֔יךָ (I had sent you) הֵ֖מָּה (they) יִשְׁמְע֥וּ (would have listened) אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ (to you).

7  וּבֵ֣ית (And the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) לֹ֤א (not) יֹאבוּ֙ (are willing) לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ (to listen) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you) כִּֽי־ (because) אֵינָ֥ם (not) אֹבִ֖ים (are they willing) לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ (to listen) אֵלָ֑י (to Me) כִּ֚י (for) כָּל־ (all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) חִזְקֵי־ (strong) מֵ֥צַח (of forehead) וּקְשֵׁי־ (and hard) לֵ֖ב (of heart) הֵֽמָּה׃ (they are).

8  הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), נָתַ֧תִּי (I have made) אֶת־ (-) פָּנֶ֛יךָ (your face) חֲזָקִ֖ים (strong) לְעֻמַּ֣ת (against) פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (their faces), וְאֶֽת־ (and) מִצְחֲךָ֥ (your forehead) חָזָ֖ק (hard) לְעֻמַּ֥ת (against) מִצְחָֽם׃ (their foreheads). 9  כְּשָׁמִ֛יר (Like a diamond) חָזָ֥ק (stronger) מִצֹּ֖ר (than flint) נָתַ֣תִּי (I have made) מִצְחֶ֑ךָ (your forehead). לֹֽא־ (Not), תִירָ֤א (do be afraid) אוֹתָם֙ (of them) וְלֹא־ (and not) תֵחַ֣ת (be dismayed) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (at their faces), כִּ֛י (for) בֵּֽית־ (a house). מְרִ֖י (Of rebellion) הֵֽמָּה׃פ (they are).

10  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And He said) אֵלָ֑י (to me) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) דְּבָרַי֙ (My words) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) אֲדַבֵּ֣ר (I speak) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to you) קַ֥ח (take) בִּֽלְבָבְךָ֖ (into your heart), וּבְאָזְנֶ֥יךָ (and with your ears) שְׁמָֽע׃ (hear). 11  וְלֵ֨ךְ (And go), בֹּ֤א (come) אֶל־ (to) הַגּוֹלָה֙ (the captivity), אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עַמֶּ֔ךָ (of your people), וְדִבַּרְתָּ֤ (and speak) אֲלֵיהֶם֙ (to them) וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them) כֹּ֥ה (Thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהֹוִ֑ה (YHWH); אִֽם־ (whether) יִשְׁמְע֖וּ (they hear), וְאִם־ (or whether) יֶחְדָּֽלוּ׃ (they refuse).

12  וַתִּשָּׂאֵ֣נִי (And lifted me up), ר֔וּחַ (the Spirit) וָאֶשְׁמַ֣ע (and I heard) אַחֲרַ֔י (behind me) ק֖וֹל (the voice) רַ֣עַשׁ (quaking), גָּד֑וֹל (of a great) בָּר֥וּךְ (Blessed is) כְּבוֹד־ (the glory) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) מִמְּקוֹמֽוֹ׃ (from His place). 13  וְק֣וֹל׀ (And the voice) כַּנְפֵ֣י (of the wings) הַחַיּ֗וֹת (of the living creatures) מַשִּׁיקוֹת֙ (touching) אִשָּׁ֣ה (each one) אֶל־ (to) אֲחוֹתָ֔הּ (her sister), וְק֥וֹל (and the voice) הָאוֹפַנִּ֖ים (of the wheels) לְעֻמָּתָ֑ם (beside them) וְק֖וֹל (and the a voice) רַ֥עַשׁ (quaking) גָּדֽוֹל׃ (of a great).

14  וְר֥וּחַ (And the Spirit) נְשָׂאַ֖תְנִי (lifted me up), וַתִּקָּחֵ֑נִי (and took me away), וָאֵלֵ֥ךְ (and I went) מַר֙ (in bitterness), בַּחֲמַ֣ת (in the heat) רוּחִ֔י (of my spirit); וְיַד־ (and the hand) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) עָלַ֖י (upon me) חָזָֽקָה׃ (was strong). 15  וָאָב֨וֹא (And I came) אֶל־ (to) הַגּוֹלָ֜ה (the captivity) תֵּ֣ל (at Tel-) אָ֠בִיב (abib), הַיֹּשְׁבִ֤ים (those dwelling) אֶֽל־ (by) נְהַר־ (the River) כְּבָר֙ (Kebar), וָאֲשֶׁר (and I sat) הֵ֖מָּה (where they) יוֹשְׁבִ֣ים (were sitting) שָׁ֑ם (there) וָאֵשֵׁ֥ב (and I sat), שָׁ֛ם (there) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִ֖ים (days) מַשְׁמִ֥ים (being desolate) בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ (in their midst).

A Watchman for Israel

16  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass) מִקְצֵ֖ה (at the end) שִׁבְעַ֣ת (of seven) יָמִ֑ים פ (days), וַיְהִ֥י (that came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 17  בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), צֹפֶ֥ה (a watchman) נְתַתִּ֖יךָ (I have made you) לְבֵ֣ית (for the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel); וְשָׁמַעְתָּ֤ (and hear) מִפִּי֙ (from My mouth), דָּבָ֔ר (a word) וְהִזְהַרְתָּ֥ (and give a warning) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ (from Me).

18  בְּאָמְרִ֤י (In My saying) לָֽרָשָׁע֙ (to the wicked), מ֣וֹת (Dying) תָּמ֔וּת (you shall die) וְלֹ֣א (and not) הִזְהַרְתּ֗וֹ (you warn him), וְלֹ֥א (and not) דִבַּ֛רְתָּ (speak) לְהַזְהִ֥יר (to warn) רָשָׁ֛ע (the wicked) מִדַּרְכּ֥וֹ (from his way), הָרְשָׁעָ֖ה (wicked) לְחַיֹּת֑וֹ (to save his life); ה֤וּא (that) רָשָׁע֙ (wicked one) בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ (in his iniquity); יָמ֔וּת (will die) וְדָמ֖וֹ (and his blood) מִיָּדְךָ֥ (from your hand) אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ (I will require). 19  וְאַתָּה֙ (And you) כִּֽי־ (if) הִזְהַ֣רְתָּ (you do warn) רָשָׁ֔ע (the wicked), וְלֹא־ (and not) שָׁב֙ (he does turn back) מֵֽרִשְׁע֔וֹ (from his wickedness), וּמִדַּרְכּ֖וֹ (and from his way), הָרְשָׁעָ֑ה (wicked) ה֚וּא (he) בַּעֲוֺנ֣וֹ (in his iniquity); יָמ֔וּת (will die) וְאַתָּ֖ה (and you) אֶֽת־ (-) נַפְשְׁךָ֥ (your own soul) הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ס (will have delivered).

20  וּבְשׁ֨וּב (And in the turning away of) צַדִּ֤יק (a righteous one) מִצִּדְקוֹ֙ (from his righteousness), וְעָ֣שָׂה (so that he does) עָ֔וֶל (iniquity), וְנָתַתִּ֥י (and I set) מִכְשׁ֛וֹל (a stumbling block) לְפָנָ֖יו (before him) ה֣וּא (he) יָמ֑וּת (will die); כִּ֣י (because) לֹ֤א (not) הִזְהַרְתּוֹ֙ (you did give him warning), בְּחַטָּאת֣וֹ (in his sin), יָמ֔וּת (he will die) וְלֹ֣א (and not) תִזָּכַ֗רְןָ (will be remembered); צִדְקֹתָו֙ (his righteousness) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔ה (he did) וְדָמ֖וֹ (and his blood) מִיָּדְךָ֥ (from your hand) אֲבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ (I will require). 21  וְאַתָּ֞ה (And you) כִּ֧י (if) הִזְהַרְתּ֣וֹ (you do warn) צַדִּ֗יק (the righteous) לְבִלְתִּ֥י (not), חֲטֹ֛א (to sin) צַדִּ֖יק (the righteous one) וְה֣וּא (and he) לֹא־ (not) חָטָ֑א (does sin), חָי֤וֹ (living) יִֽחְיֶה֙ (he shall live), כִּ֣י (because) נִזְהָ֔ר (he was warned); וְאַתָּ֖ה (and you) אֶֽת־ (-) נַפְשְׁךָ֥ (your own soul) הִצַּֽלְתָּ׃ס (will have delivered).

22  וַתְּהִ֥י (And was) עָלַ֛י (upon me) שָׁ֖ם (there) יַד־ (the hand) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and He said) אֵלַ֗י (to me) ק֥וּם (Rise), צֵא֙ (go out) אֶל־ (into) הַבִּקְעָ֔ה (the plain), וְשָׁ֖ם (and there) אֲדַבֵּ֥ר (I will speak) אוֹתָֽךְ׃ (with you).

23  וָאָקוּם֮ (And I arose), וָאֵצֵ֣א (and went out) אֶל־ (into) הַבִּקְעָה֒ (the plain); וְהִנֵּה־ (and behold), שָׁ֤ם (there), כְּבוֹד־ (the glory) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) עֹמֵ֔ד (was standing) כַּכָּב֕וֹד (like the glory) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) רָאִ֖יתִי (I saw) עַל־ (by) נְהַר־ (the River) כְּבָ֑ר (Kebar), וָאֶפֹּ֖ל (and I fell) עַל־ (upon) פָּנָֽי׃ (my face).

24  וַתָּבֹא־ (And came) בִ֣י (into me) ר֔וּחַ (the Spirit) וַתַּעֲמִדֵ֖נִי (and set me) עַל־ (upon) רַגְלָ֑י (my feet), וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר (and He spoke) אֹתִי֙ (with me) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) בֹּ֥א (Go), הִסָּגֵ֖ר (shut yourself up) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) בֵּיתֶֽךָ׃ (of your house). 25  וְאַתָּ֣ה (And you), בֶן־ (son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), הִנֵּ֨ה (behold), נָתְנ֤וּ (they will place) עָלֶ֙יךָ֙ (around you) עֲבוֹתִ֔ים (ropes) וַאֲסָר֖וּךָ (and shall bind you) בָּהֶ֑ם (with them) וְלֹ֥א (so that not) תֵצֵ֖א (you can go out) בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ (in their midst). 26  וּלְשֽׁוֹנְךָ֙ (And your tongue) אַדְבִּ֣יק (I will make cling) אֶל־ (to) חִכֶּ֔ךָ (the roof of your mouth), וְנֶֽאֱלַ֔מְתָּ (and you will be mute), וְלֹא־ (and not) תִֽהְיֶ֥ה (and you will be) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) לְאִ֣ישׁ (as a man) מוֹכִ֑יחַ (rebuking); כִּ֛י (for) בֵּ֥ית (a house) מְרִ֖י (of rebellion) הֵֽמָּה׃ (they are).

27  וּֽבְדַבְּרִ֤י (And in My speaking) אֽוֹתְךָ֙ (with you) אֶפְתַּ֣ח (I will open) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֔יךָ (your mouth), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and you shall say) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them) כֹּ֥ה (Thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהֹוִ֑ה (YHWH) הַשֹּׁמֵ֤עַ׀ (the one hearing), יִשְׁמָע֙ (let him hear); וְהֶחָדֵ֣ל׀ (and the one refusing), יֶחְדָּ֔ל (let him refuse); כִּ֛י (for) בֵּ֥ית (a house). מְרִ֖י (Of rebellion) הֵֽמָּה׃ס (they are).
