Jonah Flees from Yahweh
(Nahum 1:1–15)

1  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And came) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יוֹנָ֥ה (Jonah) בֶן־ (son) אֲמִתַּ֖י (of Amittai), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  ק֠וּם (Arise), לֵ֧ךְ (go) אֶל־ (to) נִֽינְוֵ֛ה (Nineveh), הָעִ֥יר (the city), הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה (great) וּקְרָ֣א (and call out) עָלֶ֑יהָ (against it) כִּֽי־ (for) עָלְתָ֥ה (has come up) רָעָתָ֖ם (their evil) לְפָנָֽי׃ (before My face).

3  וַיָּ֤קָם (And arose) יוֹנָה֙ (Jonah) לִבְרֹ֣חַ (to flee) תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה (to Tarshish) מִלִּפְנֵ֖י (away from the face) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיֵּ֨רֶד (and he went down) יָפ֜וֹ (to Joppa); וַיִּמְצָ֥א (and found) אָנִיָּ֣ה׀ (a ship) בָּאָ֣ה (going) תַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ (to Tarshish), וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (and he paid) שְׂכָרָ֜הּ (its fare) וַיֵּ֤רֶד (and went down) בָּהּ֙ (into it) לָב֤וֹא (to go) עִמָּהֶם֙ (with them) תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה (to Tarshish) מִלִּפְנֵ֖י (away from the face) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

The Great Storm
(Acts 27:13–26)

4  וַֽיהוָ֗ה (And YHWH) הֵטִ֤יל (hurled) רֽוּחַ־ (a wind) גְּדוֹלָה֙ (great) אֶל־ (toward) הַיָּ֔ם (the sea), וַיְהִ֥י (and there was) סַֽעַר־ (a tempest) גָּד֖וֹל (mighty) בַּיָּ֑ם (on the sea), וְהָ֣אֳנִיָּ֔ה (and the ship) חִשְּׁבָ֖ה (was thinking) לְהִשָּׁבֵֽר׃ (to be broken apart). 5  וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ (And were afraid), הַמַּלָּחִ֗ים (the sailors) וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֮ (and cried out) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) אֶל־ (to) אֱלֹהָיו֒ (his god), וַיָּטִ֨לוּ (and they threw) אֶת־ (-) הַכֵּלִ֜ים (the articles) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that were) בָּֽאֳנִיָּה֙ (in the ship) אֶל־ (into) הַיָּ֔ם (the sea), לְהָקֵ֖ל (to lighten it) מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (from them) וְיוֹנָ֗ה (and Jonah) יָרַד֙ (had gone down) אֶל־ (into) יַרְכְּתֵ֣י (the recesses) הַסְּפִינָ֔ה (of the ship); וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב (and he had lain down), וַיֵּרָדַֽם׃ (and was deeply asleep).

6  וַיִּקְרַ֤ב (And came near) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) רַ֣ב (the chief) הַחֹבֵ֔ל (pilot) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (and said) ל֖וֹ (to him) מַה־ (How) לְּךָ֣ (can you) נִרְדָּ֑ם (sleep)? ק֚וּם (Stand up), קְרָ֣א (and call) אֶל־ (to) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God), אוּלַ֞י (perhaps) יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת (will have consideration) הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים (your God) לָ֖נוּ (for us) וְלֹ֥א (and not) נֹאבֵֽד׃ (we will perish).

7  וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ (And they said) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) אֶל־ (to) רֵעֵ֗הוּ (his companion), לְכוּ֙ (Come), וְנַפִּ֣ילָה (and let us cast) גֽוֹרָל֔וֹת (lots), וְנֵ֣דְעָ֔ה (that we may know) בְּשֶׁלְּמִ֛י (by whom) הָרָעָ֥ה (the evil) הַזֹּ֖את (this) לָ֑נוּ (is upon us)

וַיַּפִּ֙לוּ֙ (and they cast) גּֽוֹרָל֔וֹת (lots), וַיִּפֹּ֥ל (and fell) הַגּוֹרָ֖ל (the lot) עַל־ (upon) יוֹנָֽה׃ (Jonah).

8  וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) הַגִּידָה־ (Declare) נָּ֣א (now), לָ֔נוּ (to us) בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (with regard) לְמִי־ (to whom) הָרָעָ֥ה (evil) הַזֹּ֖את (is this) לָ֑נוּ (upon us) מַה־ (What is) מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙ (your occupation)? וּמֵאַ֣יִן (And from where) תָּב֔וֹא (do you come) מָ֣ה (What is) אַרְצֶ֔ךָ (your land)? וְאֵֽי־ (And which) מִזֶּ֥ה (from) עַ֖ם (people) אָֽתָּה׃ (are you)?

9  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he said) אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (to them) עִבְרִ֣י (A Hebrew); אָנֹ֑כִי (I am) וְאֶת־ (and) יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH), אֱלֹהֵ֤י (God) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (of the heavens), אֲנִ֣י (I) יָרֵ֔א (fear) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) עָשָׂ֥ה (made) אֶת־ (-) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) וְאֶת־ (and) הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃ (the dry land).

10  וַיִּֽירְא֤וּ (And feared), הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ (the men) יִרְאָ֣ה (with a fear) גְדוֹלָ֔ה (great) וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ (and they said) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) מַה־ (What is) זֹּ֣את (this)? עָשִׂ֑יתָ (You have done) כִּֽי־ (for) יָדְע֣וּ (knew) הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים (the men) כִּֽי־ (that) מִלִּפְנֵ֤י (away from the face) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) ה֣וּא (he) בֹרֵ֔חַ (was fleeing) כִּ֥י (because) הִגִּ֖יד (he had told) לָהֶֽם׃ (them).

Jonah Cast into the Sea

11  וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ (And they said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) מַה־ (What) נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה (shall we do) לָּ֔ךְ (to you) וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק (that may become quiet) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ (around us) כִּ֥י (for) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) הוֹלֵ֥ךְ (was going on), וְסֹעֵֽר׃ (and raging).

12  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (to them) שָׂא֙וּנִי֙ (Pick me up), וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי (and cast me) אֶל־ (into) הַיָּ֔ם (the sea); וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק (and will become quiet) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם (around you⁺) כִּ֚י (for) יוֹדֵ֣עַ (know) אָ֔נִי (I) כִּ֣י (that) בְשֶׁלִּ֔י (because of me) הַסַּ֧עַר (the tempest) הַגָּד֛וֹל (great) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ (is upon you⁺).

13  וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּ (Dug in) הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים (the men) לְהָשִׁ֛יב (to return) אֶל־ (to) הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה (the land); וְלֹ֣א (not); יָכֹ֑לוּ (they were they able) כִּ֣י (for) הַיָּ֔ם (the sea) הוֹלֵ֥ךְ (was going on), וְסֹעֵ֖ר (and raging) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (against them).

14  וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ (And they cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH), וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ (and said), אָנָּ֤ה (Ah), יְהוָה֙ (O YHWH), אַל־ (do not) נָ֣א (please), נֹאבְדָ֗ה (let us perish) בְּנֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ (for the soul), הָאִ֣ישׁ (of the man) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) וְאַל־ (and do not) תִּתֵּ֥ן (put) עָלֵ֖ינוּ (upon us) דָּ֣ם (blood); נָקִ֑יא (innocent) כִּֽי־ (for) אַתָּ֣ה (You), יְהוָ֔ה (O YHWH), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) חָפַ֖צְתָּ (You pleased) עָשִֽׂיתָ׃ (You have done).

15  וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ (And they picked up) אֶת־ (-) יוֹנָ֔ה (Jonah), וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ (and they cast him) אֶל־ (into) הַיָּ֑ם (the sea), וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד (and stood) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃ (from its raging).

16  וַיִּֽירְא֧וּ (And feared) הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים (the men) יִרְאָ֥ה (with fear) גְדוֹלָ֖ה (great), אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH) וַיִּֽזְבְּחוּ־ (and they offered) זֶ֙בַח֙ (a sacrifice) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), וַֽיִּדְּר֖וּ (and they vowed) נְדָרִֽים׃ (vows).

17  וַיְמַ֤ן (And appointed) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) דָּ֣ג (a fish) גָּד֔וֹל (great) לִבְלֹ֖עַ (to swallow) אֶת־ (-) יוֹנָ֑ה (Jonah). וַיְהִ֤י (And was) יוֹנָה֙ (Jonah) בִּמְעֵ֣י (in the bowels) הַדָּ֔ג (of the fish) שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה (three) יָמִ֖ים (days) וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה (and three) לֵילֽוֹת׃ (nights).
