The Destruction of Edom
(Jeremiah 49:7–22)

1  חֲז֖וֹן (The vision) עֹֽבַדְיָ֑ה (of Obadiah).

כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַר֩ (says) אֲדֹנָ֨י (the Lord) יְהוִ֜ה (YHWH), לֶאֱד֗וֹם (concerning Edom);

שְׁמוּעָ֨ה (a report) שָׁמַ֜עְנוּ (we have heard) מֵאֵ֤ת (from) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH)

וְצִיר֙ (and a messenger) בַּגּוֹיִ֣ם (among the nations), שֻׁלָּ֔ח (has been sent)

ק֛וּמוּ (Rise up)

וְנָק֥וּמָה (and let us rise) עָלֶיהָ (against her) לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (for battle).

2  הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), קָטֹ֛ן (small) נְתַתִּ֖יךָ (I am making you) בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם (among the nations);

בָּז֥וּי (are despised) אַתָּ֖ה (you) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly).

3  זְד֤וֹן (The pride) לִבְּךָ֙ (of your heart) הִשִּׁיאֶ֔ךָ (has deceived you)

שֹׁכְנִ֥י (O dweller) בְחַגְוֵי־ (in the clefts) סֶּ֖לַע (of the rock),

מְר֣וֹם (in the height); שִׁבְתּ֑וֹ (of his dwelling)

אֹמֵ֣ר (the one saying) בְּלִבּ֔וֹ (in his heart),

מִ֥י (Who) יוֹרִדֵ֖נִי (will bring me down) אָֽרֶץ׃ (to the ground)?

4  אִם־ (Though) תַּגְבִּ֣יהַּ (you may rise high) כַּנֶּ֔שֶׁר (like the eagle),

וְאִם־ (and though) בֵּ֥ין (between) כּֽוֹכָבִ֖ים (the stars), שִׂ֣ים (is set) קִנֶּ֑ךָ (your nest)

מִשָּׁ֥ם (from there) אוֹרִֽידְךָ֖ (will I bring you down),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

5  אִם־ (If) גַּנָּבִ֤ים (thieves) בָּאֽוּ־ (had come) לְךָ֙ (to you)

אִם־ (if) שׁ֣וֹדְדֵי (plunderers) לַ֔יְלָה (by night),

אֵ֣יךְ (how) נִדְמֵ֔יתָה (you have been cut off)

הֲל֥וֹא (would not) יִגְנְב֖וּ (they have stolen) דַּיָּ֑ם (enough for themselves)?

אִם־ (If) בֹּֽצְרִים֙ (grape-gatherers) בָּ֣אוּ (had come) לָ֔ךְ (to you)

הֲל֖וֹא (would not) יַשְׁאִ֥ירוּ (they have left remaining) עֹלֵלֽוֹת׃ (some gleanings)?

6  אֵ֚יךְ (How) נֶחְפְּשׂ֣וּ (has been searched out)! עֵשָׂ֔ו (Esau)

נִבְע֖וּ (how sought)! מַצְפֻּנָֽיו׃ (His hidden treasures).

7  עַֽד־ (Up to) הַגְּב֣וּל (the border), שִׁלְּח֗וּךָ (will force you)

כֹּ֚ל (all) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) בְרִיתֶ֔ךָ (of your alliance)

הִשִּׁיא֛וּךָ (will deceive you) יָכְל֥וּ (and will prevail) לְךָ֖ (against you)

אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) שְׁלֹמֶ֑ךָ (at peace with you)

לַחְמְךָ֗ (those sharing your bread)

יָשִׂ֤ימוּ (will set) מָזוֹר֙ (a trap) תַּחְתֶּ֔יךָ (for you)

אֵ֥ין (there is no) תְּבוּנָ֖ה (understanding) בּֽוֹ׃ (of it).

8  הֲל֛וֹא (Will not) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day), הַה֖וּא (that) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֤י (And I even destroy) חֲכָמִים֙ (the wise men) מֵֽאֱד֔וֹם (from Edom)

וּתְבוּנָ֖ה (and understanding)

מֵהַ֥ר (from the mountains) עֵשָֽׂו׃ (of Esau)?

9  וְחַתּ֥וּ (And will be dismayed), גִבּוֹרֶ֖יךָ (your mighty men)

תֵּימָ֑ן (O Teman),

לְמַ֧עַן (so that) יִכָּֽרֶת־ (will be cut down) אִ֛ישׁ (each man) מֵהַ֥ר (from the mountains)

עֵשָׂ֖ו (of Esau) מִקָּֽטֶל׃ (in the slaughter).

10  מֵחֲמַ֛ס (From the violence) אָחִ֥יךָ (to your brother) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob)

תְּכַסְּךָ֣ (will cover you) בוּשָׁ֑ה (shame)

וְנִכְרַ֖תָּ (and you will be cut off) לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

11  בְּיוֹם֙ (On the day) עֲמָֽדְךָ֣ (of your standing away) מִנֶּ֔גֶד (from before him),

בְּי֛וֹם (on the day) שְׁב֥וֹת (carried away captive) זָרִ֖ים (strangers) חֵיל֑וֹ (his wealth),

וְנָכְרִ֞ים (and foreigners) בָּ֣אוּ (entered) שַׁעֲרוֹ (his gates),

וְעַל־ (and over) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (Jerusalem), יַדּ֣וּ (they cast) גוֹרָ֔ל (lots)

גַּם־ (even) אַתָּ֖ה (you were) כְּאַחַ֥ד (as one) מֵהֶֽם׃ (of them).

12  וְאַל־ (And not) תֵּ֤רֶא (look) בְיוֹם־ (on the day) אָחִ֙יךָ֙ (of your brother)

בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) נָכְר֔וֹ (of his captivity);

וְאַל־ (and not) תִּשְׂמַ֥ח (rejoice) לִבְנֵֽי־ (at the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah)

בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) אָבְדָ֑ם (of their destruction);

וְאַל־ (and not) תַּגְדֵּ֥ל (should you enlarge) פִּ֖יךָ (your mouth)

בְּי֥וֹם (in the day) צָרָֽה׃ (of distress).

13  אַל־ (Not) תָּב֤וֹא (should you come) בְשַֽׁעַר־ (into the gate) עַמִּי֙ (of My people)

בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) אֵידָ֔ם (of their calamity);

אַל־ (not) תֵּ֧רֶא (look) גַם־ (yes), אַתָּ֛ה (you) בְּרָעָת֖וֹ (on his affliction)

בְּי֣וֹם (in the day) אֵיד֑וֹ (of his calamity),

וְאַל־ (and not) תִּשְׁלַ֥חְנָה (should you⁺ send forth) בְחֵיל֖וֹ (upon his wealth)

בְּי֥וֹם (in the day) אֵידֽוֹ׃ (of his calamity);

14  וְאַֽל־ (and not) תַּעֲמֹד֙ (should you stand) עַל־ (at) הַפֶּ֔רֶק (the crossroad),

לְהַכְרִ֖ית (to cut down) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִיטָ֑יו (his fugitives);

וְאַל־ (and not) תַּסְגֵּ֥ר (should you deliver up) שְׂרִידָ֖יו (his survivors)

בְּי֥וֹם (in the day) צָרָֽה׃ (of distress).

The Deliverance of Israel

15  כִּֽי־ (For) קָר֥וֹב (is near) יוֹם־ (the day) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH)

עַל־ (upon) כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (the nations).

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (As) עָשִׂ֙יתָ֙ (you have done), יֵעָ֣שֶׂה (it will be done) לָּ֔ךְ (to you)

גְּמֻלְךָ֖ (your recompense) יָשׁ֥וּב (will return) בְּרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃ (upon your own head).

16  כִּ֗י (For) כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֤ר (according to how) שְׁתִיתֶם֙ (you⁺ drank) עַל־ (on) הַ֣ר (the mountain), קָדְשִׁ֔י (of my holiness)

יִשְׁתּ֥וּ (will drink) כָֽל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (the nations) תָּמִ֑יד (continually),

וְשָׁת֣וּ (and they will drink), וְלָע֔וּ (and they will swallow),

וְהָי֖וּ (and they will be) כְּל֥וֹא (as though not) הָיֽוּ׃ (they had existed).

17  וּבְהַ֥ר (And on Mount) צִיּ֛וֹן (Zion) תִּהְיֶ֥ה (there will be) פְלֵיטָ֖ה (an escape),

וְהָ֣יָה (and there will be) קֹ֑דֶשׁ (holiness);

וְיָֽרְשׁוּ֙ (and will repossess) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob)

אֵ֖ת (-) מוֹרָֽשֵׁיהֶם׃ (their possessions).

18  וְהָיָה֩ (And will become) בֵית־ (the house) יַעֲקֹ֨ב (of Jacob) אֵ֜שׁ (a fire),

וּבֵ֧ית (and the house) יוֹסֵ֣ף (of Joseph) לֶהָבָ֗ה (a flame),

וּבֵ֤ית (and the house) עֵשָׂו֙ (of Esau) לְקַ֔שׁ (as stubble),

וְדָלְק֥וּ (and they will burn) בָהֶ֖ם (them) וַאֲכָל֑וּם (and consume them)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִֽהְיֶ֤ה (will there be) שָׂרִיד֙ (a survivor)

לְבֵ֣ית (to the house) עֵשָׂ֔ו (of Esau);

כִּ֥י (for) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) דִּבֵּֽר׃ (has spoken).

19  וְיָרְשׁ֨וּ (And will possess) הַנֶּ֜גֶב (the Negev) אֶת־ (-) הַ֣ר (the mountains) עֵשָׂ֗ו (of Esau);

וְהַשְּׁפֵלָה֙ (and the Shephelah) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines);

וְיָרְשׁוּ֙ (and they will possess) אֶת־ (-) שְׂדֵ֣ה (the land) אֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim), וְאֵ֖ת (and) שְׂדֵ֣ה (the land) שֹׁמְר֑וֹן (of Samaria),

וּבִנְיָמִ֖ן (and Benjamin) אֶת־ (-) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (Gilead).

20  וְגָלֻ֣ת (And the captivity) הַֽחֵל־ (host) הַ֠זֶּה (of this) לִבְנֵ֨י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל (of Israel)

אֲשֶֽׁר־ (that) כְּנַעֲנִים֙ (of the Canaanites), עַד־ (as far as) צָ֣רְפַ֔ת (Zarephath);

וְגָלֻ֥ת (and the captives) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (of Jerusalem), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who are) בִּסְפָרַ֑ד (in Sepharad),

יִֽרְשׁ֕וּ (will possess) אֵ֖ת (-) עָרֵ֥י (the cities) הַנֶּֽגֶב׃ (of the Negev).

21  וְעָל֤וּ (And will go up) מֽוֹשִׁעִים֙ (those delivering) בְּהַ֣ר (onto Mount) צִיּ֔וֹן (Zion)

לִשְׁפֹּ֖ט (to judge) אֶת־ (-) הַ֣ר (the mountains) עֵשָׂ֑ו (of Esau);

וְהָיְתָ֥ה (and will be) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (unto YHWH) הַמְּלוּכָֽה׃ (the kingdom).
