Tola

1  וַיָּקָם֩ (And there arose) אַחֲרֵ֨י (after) אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ (Abimelech) לְהוֹשִׁ֣יעַ (to save) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) תּוֹלָ֧ע (Tola) בֶּן־ (son) פּוּאָ֛ה (of Puah), בֶּן־ (son) דּוֹד֖וֹ (of Dodo), אִ֣ישׁ (a man) יִשָּׂשכָ֑ר (of Issachar). וְהֽוּא־ (And he) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (dwelt) בְּשָׁמִ֖יר (in Shamir) בְּהַ֥ר (in the hill country) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (of Ephraim).

2  וַיִּשְׁפֹּט֙ (And He judged) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וְשָׁלֹ֖שׁ (and three) שָׁנָ֑ה (years), וַיָּ֖מָת (and he died), וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר (and he was buried) בְּשָׁמִֽיר׃פ (in Shamir).

Jair

3  וַיָּ֣קָם (And arose) אַחֲרָ֔יו (after him) יָאִ֖יר (Jair), הַגִּלְעָדִ֑י (the Gileadite) וַיִּשְׁפֹּט֙ (and he judged) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וּשְׁתַּ֖יִם (and two) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 4  וַֽיְהִי־ (And there were) ל֞וֹ (unto him) שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (thirty) בָּנִ֗ים (sons) רֹֽכְבִים֙ (who rode) עַל־ (on) שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (thirty) עֲיָרִ֔ים (donkeys), וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (and thirty) עֲיָרִ֖ים (towns) לָהֶ֑ם (unto him), לָהֶ֞ם (which) יִקְרְא֣וּ׀ (are called) חַוֺּ֣ת (Havvoth-) יָאִ֗יר (jair) עַ֚ד (to) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which are) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ (of Gilead).

5  וַיָּ֣מָת (And died) יָאִ֔יר (Jair), וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר (and he was buried) בְּקָמֽוֹן׃פ (in Kamon).

Oppression by the Philistines and Ammonites

6  וַיֹּסִ֣פוּ׀ (And added) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to do) הָרַע֮ (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָה֒ (of YHWH), וַיַּעַבְד֣וּ (and they served) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּעָלִ֣ים (the Baals), וְאֶת־ (and) הָעַשְׁתָּר֡וֹת (the Ashtoreths), וְאֶת־ (and) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) אֲרָם֩ (of Aram), וְאֶת־ (and) אֱלֹהֵ֨י (the gods) צִיד֜וֹן (of Sidon), וְאֵ֣ת׀ (and) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) מוֹאָ֗ב (of Moab), וְאֵת֙ (and) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) בְנֵי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon), וְאֵ֖ת (and) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים (of the Philistines), וַיַּעַזְב֥וּ (and they forsook) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) וְלֹ֥א (and not) עֲבָדֽוּהוּ׃ (did serve Him).

7  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And was hot) אַ֥ף (the anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (against Israel), וַֽיִּמְכְּרֵם֙ (and He sold them) בְּיַד־ (into the hands) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines) וּבְיַ֖ד (and into the hands) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) עַמּֽוֹן׃ (of Ammon). 8  וַֽיִּרְעֲצ֤וּ (And they harassed) וַיְרֹֽצְצוּ֙ (and oppressed) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel)— בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה (from year) הַהִ֑יא (that), שְׁמֹנֶ֨ה (eight) עֶשְׂרֵ֜ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֗ה (years), אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) אֲשֶׁר֙ (who were) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (on the other side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (of the Jordan) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) הָאֱמֹרִ֖י (of the Amorite), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that is) בַּגִּלְעָֽד׃ (in Gilead).

9  וַיַּעַבְר֤וּ (And passed over) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) עַמּוֹן֙ (of Ammon) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (the Jordan) לְהִלָּחֵ֛ם (to fight) גַּם־ (also) בִּיהוּדָ֥ה (against Judah), וּבְבִנְיָמִ֖ין (and against Benjamin), וּבְבֵ֣ית (and against the house) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (of Ephraim). וַתֵּ֥צֶר (And was distressed) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) מְאֹֽד׃ (severely).

10  וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֙ (And cried out) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), חָטָ֣אנוּ (We have sinned) לָ֔ךְ (against You) וְכִ֤י (because) עָזַ֙בְנוּ֙ (we have both forsaken) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (our God) וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֖ד (and served) אֶת־ (-) הַבְּעָלִֽים׃פ (the Baals).

11  וַ֥יֹּאמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), הֲלֹ֤א (Did not I save you) מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ (from Egypt) וּמִן־ (and from) הָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י (the Amorite), וּמִן־ (and from) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) עַמּ֖וֹן (of Ammon), וּמִן־ (and from) פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (the Philistines)? 12  וְצִידוֹנִ֤ים (And the Sidonians) וַֽעֲמָלֵק֙ (and Amalekite) וּמָע֔וֹן (and Maonites) לָחֲצ֖וּ (oppressed) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺), וַתִּצְעֲק֣וּ (and you⁺ cried out) אֵלַ֔י (to Me), וָאוֹשִׁ֥יעָה (and I delivered) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) מִיָּדָֽם׃ (from their hands). 13  וְאַתֶּם֙ (And you⁺) עֲזַבְתֶּ֣ם (have forsaken) אוֹתִ֔י (Me) וַתַּעַבְד֖וּ (and served) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֑ים (other); לָכֵ֥ן (therefore) לֹֽא־ (not) אוֹסִ֖יף (I will add) לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ (to deliver) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 14  לְכ֗וּ (Go) וְזַֽעֲקוּ֙ (and cry out) אֶל־ (to) הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים (the gods) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ have chosen) בָּ֑ם (them); הֵ֛מָּה (them) יוֹשִׁ֥יעוּ (let deliver) לָכֶ֖ם (you⁺) בְּעֵ֥ת (in the time) צָרַתְכֶֽם׃ (of your⁺ distress).

15  וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ (And said) בְנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), חָטָ֔אנוּ (We have sinned). עֲשֵׂה־ (Do) אַתָּ֣ה (You) לָ֔נוּ (to us) כְּכָל־ (according to all) הַטּ֖וֹב (that is good) בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ (in Your eyes). אַ֛ךְ (Only) הַצִּילֵ֥נוּ (deliver us), נָ֖א (please), הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 16  וַיָּסִ֜ירוּ (And they put away) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (gods) הַנֵּכָר֙ (the foreign) מִקִּרְבָּ֔ם (from among them) וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ (and they served) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), וַתִּקְצַ֥ר (was shortened) נַפְשׁ֖וֹ (His soul) בַּעֲמַ֥ל (in the misery) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel).

17  וַיִּצָּֽעֲקוּ֙ (And gathered together) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and encamped) בַּגִּלְעָ֑ד (in Gilead). וַיֵּאָֽסְפוּ֙ (And assembled) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ (and encamped) בַּמִּצְפָּֽה׃ (in Mizpah). 18  וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ (And said) הָעָ֜ם (the people)— שָׂרֵ֤י (the leaders) גִלְעָד֙ (of Gilead)— אִ֣ישׁ (one) אֶל־ (to) רֵעֵ֔הוּ (another), מִ֣י (Who is) הָאִ֔ישׁ (the man) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) יָחֵ֔ל (will begin) לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם (the fight) בִּבְנֵ֣י (against the sons) עַמּ֑וֹן (of Ammon)? יִֽהְיֶ֣ה (He shall be) לְרֹ֔אשׁ (head) לְכֹ֖ל (over all) יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (the dwellers) גִלְעָֽד׃פ (of Gilead).
