Proverbs 28

The Boldness of the Righteous

1  נָ֣סוּ (Flee) וְאֵין־ (and no one) רֹדֵ֣ף (is pursuing) רָשָׁ֑ע (the wicked),

וְ֝צַדִּיקִ֗ים (and the righteous) כִּכְפִ֥יר (as a young lion) יִבְטָֽח׃ (are confident).

2  בְּפֶ֣שַֽׁע (In the transgression) אֶ֭רֶץ (of the land) רַבִּ֣ים (many) שָׂרֶ֑יהָ (are its princes),

וּבְאָדָ֥ם (and with one man) מֵבִ֥ין (understanding) יֹ֝דֵ֗עַ (and knowing) כֵּ֣ן (so) יַאֲרִֽיךְ׃ (it will last long).

3  גֶּ֣בֶר (A man) רָ֭שׁ (being poor) וְעֹשֵׁ֣ק (and oppressing) דַּלִּ֑ים (the lowly ones)

מָטָ֥ר (is like a rain) סֹ֝חֵ֗ף (beating down) וְאֵ֣ין (and there is no) לָֽחֶם׃ (bread).

4  עֹזְבֵ֣י (Those abandoning) ת֭וֹרָה (instruction) יְהַֽלְל֣וּ (praise) רָשָׁ֑ע (a wicked one),

וְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י (and those guarding) ת֝וֹרָ֗ה (instruction) יִתְגָּ֥רוּ (contend) בָֽם׃פ (with them).

5  אַנְשֵׁי־ (Men) רָ֭ע (of evil) לֹא־ (not) יָבִ֣ינוּ (do understand) מִשְׁפָּ֑ט (justice),

וּמְבַקְשֵׁ֥י (and those seeking) יְ֝הוָ֗ה (YHWH) יָבִ֥ינוּ (understand) כֹֽל׃ (all).

6  טֽוֹב־ (Better) רָ֭שׁ (one being poor) הוֹלֵ֣ךְ (walking) בְּתֻמּ֑וֹ (in his integrity),

מֵעִקֵּ֥שׁ (than one crooked in) דְּ֝רָכַ֗יִם (his ways) וְה֣וּא (and he) עָשִֽׁיר׃ (is rich).

7  נוֹצֵ֣ר (One watching over) תּ֭וֹרָה (the law) בֵּ֣ן (is a son) מֵבִ֑ין (discerning),

וְרֹעֶה (and one associating with) זֽ֝וֹלְלִ֗ים (gluttons) יַכְלִ֥ים (disgraces) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).

8  מַרְבֶּ֣ה (The one multiplying) ה֭וֹנוֹ (his wealth) בְּנֶ֣שֶׁךְ (by interest) וּבְתַרְבִּית (and usury),

לְחוֹנֵ֖ן (it is for one showing favor) דַּלִּ֣ים (to lowly ones) יִקְבְּצֶֽנּוּ׃ (gathers it).

9  מֵסִ֣יר (One turning aside) אָ֭זְנוֹ (his ear) מִשְּׁמֹ֣עַ (from hearing) תּוֹרָ֑ה (instruction)—

גַּֽם־ (even) תְּ֝פִלָּת֗וֹ (his prayer) תּוֹעֵבָֽה׃ (is an abomination).

10  מַשְׁגֶּ֤ה (One causing to stray) יְשָׁרִ֨ים׀ (the upright) בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ (onto a path) רָ֗ע (of evil),

בִּשְׁחוּת֥וֹ (into his pit) הֽוּא־ (he himself) יִפּ֑וֹל (will fall),

וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים (and the blameless ones) יִנְחֲלוּ־ (will inherit) טֽוֹב׃ (good things).

11  חָכָ֣ם (Wise) בְּ֭עֵינָיו (in his own eyes) אִ֣ישׁ (is a man) עָשִׁ֑יר (rich),

וְדַ֖ל (and a poor one) מֵבִ֣ין (being discerning) יַחְקְרֶֽנּוּ׃ (will search him out).

12  בַּעֲלֹ֣ץ (In the rejoicing of) צַ֭דִּיקִים (the righteous), רַבָּ֣ה (is great) תִפְאָ֑רֶת (beauty),

וּבְק֥וּם (and in the rising up of) רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים (wicked ones), יְחֻפַּ֥שׂ (hides himself) אָדָֽם׃ (a man).

13  מְכַסֶּ֣ה (One covering) פְ֭שָׁעָיו (his transgressions) לֹ֣א (not) יַצְלִ֑יחַ (will prosper),

וּמוֹדֶ֖ה (and one confessing) וְעֹזֵ֣ב (and forsaking them) יְרֻחָֽם׃ (will find mercy).

14  אַשְׁרֵ֣י (Blessed is) אָ֭דָם (the man) מְפַחֵ֣ד (being reverent) תָּמִ֑יד (continually),

וּמַקְשֶׁ֥ה (and the one hardening) לִ֝בּ֗וֹ (his heart) יִפּ֥וֹל (will fall) בְּרָעָֽה׃ (into distress).

15  אֲרִי־ (A lion) נֹ֭הֵם (roaring) וְדֹ֣ב (and a bear) שׁוֹקֵ֑ק (rushing)

מֹשֵׁ֥ל (is a ruler) רָ֝שָׁ֗ע (wicked) עַ֣ל (over) עַם־ (a people) דָּֽל׃ (poor).

16  נָגִ֗יד (A leader) חֲסַ֣ר (lacking) תְּ֭בוּנוֹת (in understanding) וְרַ֥ב (is also abundant) מַעֲשַׁקּ֑וֹת (of oppressions);

שֹׂנְאֵי (one hating) בֶ֝֗צַע (dishonest gain) יַאֲרִ֥יךְ (prolongs) יָמִֽים׃פ (days).

17  אָ֭דָם (A man) עָשֻׁ֣ק (pressed down) בְּדַם־ (by the bloodshed) נָפֶשׁ (of a soul)

עַד־ (into) בּ֥וֹר (the Pit) יָ֝נ֗וּס (he will flee);

אַל־ (with none) יִתְמְכוּ־ (grabbing hold) בֽוֹ׃ (of him).

18  הוֹלֵ֣ךְ (One walking) תָּ֭מִים (blamelessly) יִוָּשֵׁ֑עַ (will be saved),

וְנֶעְקַ֥שׁ (and one crooked in) דְּ֝רָכַ֗יִם (his ways) יִפּ֥וֹל (will fall) בְּאֶחָֽת׃ (at once).

19  עֹבֵ֣ד (The one working) אַ֭דְמָתוֹ (his land) יִֽשְׂבַּֽע־ (will be filled) לָ֑חֶם (with bread),

וּמְרַדֵּ֥ף (and the one pursuing) רֵ֝קִ֗ים (empty things) יִֽשְׂבַּֽע־ (will be filled) רִֽישׁ׃ (with poverty).

20  אִ֣ישׁ (A man) אֱ֭מוּנוֹת (of faithfulness) רַב־ (has an abundance) בְּרָכ֑וֹת (of blessings),

וְאָ֥ץ (and the one hurrying) לְ֝הַעֲשִׁ֗יר (to be rich) לֹ֣א (not) יִנָּקֶֽה׃ (be acquitted).

21  הַֽכֵּר־ (To regard) פָּנִ֥ים (faces) לֹא־ (is not) ט֑וֹב (good),

וְעַל־ (and over) פַּת־ (a morsel) לֶ֝֗חֶם (of bread) יִפְשַׁע־ (will transgress) גָּֽבֶר׃ (a strong man).

22  נִֽבֳהָ֥ל (Is panicked) לַה֗וֹן (for wealth) אִ֭ישׁ (a man with) רַ֣ע (an evil) עָ֑יִן (eye),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יֵ֝דַע (does he know) כִּי־ (that) חֶ֥סֶר (poverty) יְבֹאֶֽנּוּ׃ (will come upon him).

23  מ֘וֹכִ֤יחַ (The one rebuking) אָדָ֣ם (a man), אַ֭חֲרַי (afterward) חֵ֣ן (favor) יִמְצָ֑א (will find)

מִֽמַּחֲלִ֥יק (more than one being smooth) לָשֽׁוֹן׃ (of tongue).

24  גּוֹזֵ֤ל׀ (One robbing) אָ֘בִ֤יו (his father) וְאִמּ֗וֹ (or his mother) וְאֹמֵ֥ר (and saying), אֵֽין־ (There is no) פָּ֑שַׁע (transgression),

חָבֵ֥ר (a companion) ה֝֗וּא (he is) לְאִ֣ישׁ (to the man) מַשְׁחִֽית׃ (bringing ruin).

25  רְחַב־ (Being wide of) נֶ֭פֶשׁ (appetite) יְגָרֶ֣ה (stirs up) מָד֑וֹן (strife),

וּבוֹטֵ֖חַ (and one trusting) עַל־ (upon) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) יְדֻשָּֽׁן׃ (will be made fat).

26  בּוֹטֵ֣חַ (The one trusting) בְּ֭לִבּוֹ (in his heart), ה֣וּא (he is) כְסִ֑יל (a fool),

וְהוֹלֵ֥ךְ (and the one walking) בְּ֝חָכְמָ֗ה (in wisdom), ה֣וּא (he) יִמָּלֵֽט׃ (will be delivered).

27  נוֹתֵ֣ן (One giving) לָ֭רָשׁ (to the poor) אֵ֣ין (not) מַחְס֑וֹר (will lack),

וּמַעְלִ֥ים (and one hiding) עֵ֝ינָ֗יו (his eyes) רַב־ (has an abundance) מְאֵרֽוֹת׃ (of curses).

28  בְּק֣וּם (With the rising up of) רְ֭שָׁעִים (the wicked), יִסָּתֵ֣ר (hides himself) אָדָ֑ם (a man),

וּ֝בְאָבְדָ֗ם (and with their perishing) יִרְבּ֥וּ (multiply) צַדִּיקִֽים׃ (the righteous).
