The Soldiers Mock Jesus
(Isaiah 50:4-11; Matthew 27:27-31; Mark 15:16-20; Luke 22:63-65)

1So at that time Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2And the soldiers, having twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head and cast around Him a purple robe. 3And they began coming up to Him and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they kept giving Him blows with the palm.

4And Pilate went forth outside again and says to them, “Behold, I bring Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” 5Therefore Jesus went forth outside, wearing the thorny crown and the purple robe. And he says to them, “Behold the man!”

6Therefore when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify! Crucify!”

Pilate says to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”

7The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.”

8Therefore when Pilate heard this word, he was even more afraid. 9And he went into the Praetorium again, and he says to Jesus, “Where are You from?”

But Jesus did not give him an answer.

10Therefore Pilate says to Him, “Do You not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”

11Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over Me, if it were not given to you from above. Because of this, the one having delivered Me up to you has greater sin.”

12Out of this, Pilate was seeking to release Him; but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar. Everyone making himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

13Therefore Pilate, having heard these words, brought Jesus out and sat down upon the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14Now it was the Day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he says to the Jews, “Behold your king!”

15So they cried out, “Away with Him, away! Crucify Him!”

Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.”

The Crucifixion
(Psalms 22:1-31; 69:1-36; Matthew 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43)

16So then, he delivered Him to them, that He might be crucified. Therefore they took Jesus.

17And bearing His own cross, He went out to the place called the Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha, 18where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, on this side and on that side, and Jesus in between.

19And Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross. And it was written,

20Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. 21Therefore the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’”

22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23Then the soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top all throughout. 24Therefore they said to one another, “Let us not tear it up, but let us cast lots for it, whose it will be,” that Scripture might be fulfilled that said:

“They divided My garments among them,

and for My clothing they cast a lot.”a

So indeed the soldiers did these things.

25Now His mother, and the sister of His mother, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene, had been standing by the cross of Jesus. 26Therefore Jesus, having seen His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing by, says to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” 27Then He says to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her to the own.

The Death of Jesus
(Psalm 22:1-31; Matthew 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49)

28After this, Jesus, knowing that now all things had been accomplished, so that Scripture might be fulfilled, says, “I thirst.” 29A vessel full of sour wine had been set there. So having put on a stalk of hyssop a sponge filled with sour wine, they brought it to the mouth. 30Therefore when Jesus took the sour wine, He said “It has been finished.” And having bowed the head, He yielded up the spirit.

Jesus' Side is Pierced
(Zechariah 12:10-14)

31Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation, so that bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath—for that Sabbath was a high day—asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and they might be taken away. 32So the soldiers came, and indeed they broke the legs of the first, and of the other having been crucified with Him.

33But having come to Jesus, when they saw Him already having been dead, they did not break His legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and blood and water came out immediately. 35And the one having seen has borne witness, and his testimony is true. And He knows that he is speaking truth, so that you also might believe.

36For these things took place so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one bone of Him will be broken.”b 37And again, another Scripture says: “They will look on the One they have pierced.”c

The Burial of Jesus
(Isaiah 53:9-12; Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56)

38And after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed through the fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave permission. So he came and took away His body. 39Now Nicodemus, the one having come to Him by night at the first, also came bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred litras.d 40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as is the custom among the Jews to prepare for burial.

41Now there was a garden in the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid. 42So on account of the Preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus there.
