Jesus Before Pilate
(Matthew 27:11-14; John 18:28-40)

1And having risen up, all the multitude of them led Him to Pilate. 2And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation, and forbidding tribute to be given to Caesar, and declaring Himself to be Christ, a king.”

3And Pilate questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

And answering him, He was saying, “You say.”

4And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.”

5But they kept insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all of Judea, and He has begun from Galilee even to here.”

Jesus Before Herod

6And Pilate having heard, asked whether the man is a Galilean, 7and having learned that He is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent Him up to Herod, he himself being also in Jerusalem in those days.

8And Herod, having seen Jesus, was exceedingly glad; for of a long time he is wishing to see Him, because of hearing concerning Him; and he was hoping to see some sign done by Him. 9And He kept questioning Him in many words, but He answered him nothing.

10And the chief priests and the scribes had been standing by, vehemently accusing Him. 11And Herod, with his troops, having set Him at naught and also having mocked Him, having put on Him splendid apparel, sent Him back to Pilate.

12And both Herod and Pilate became friends with one another on that day; for previously it had been that they were at enmity between themselves.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas
(Matthew 27:15-23; Mark 15:6-11)

13And Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14said to them, “You brought to me this man as one misleading the people; and behold, having examined Him before you, I found nothing in this man guilty of that accusation you are bringing against Him. 15No, not even Herod did; for he sent Him back to us. And behold, nothing worthy of death is done by Him. 16Therefore having chastised Him, I will release Him.”a

18But they cried out all together, saying, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas,” 19who was one having been cast into the prison on account of a certain insurrection having been made in the city, and murder.

20Therefore Pilate, wishing to release Jesus, called to them again. 21But they were crying out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify Him!”

22And he said to them a third time, “What evil indeed did this man commit? I found no cause of death in Him. Therefore having chastised Him, I will release Him.”

23But they were urgent, asking with loud voices for Him to be crucified. And their voicesb were prevailing. 24And Pilate sentenced their demand to be done. 25And he released the one having been cast into prison on account of insurrection and murder, whom they had asked for; and Jesus he delivered to their will.

The Crucifixion
(Psalms 22:1-31; 69:1-36; Matthew 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; John 19:16-27)

26And as they led Him away, having laid hold on Simon, a certain man of Cyrene coming from the country, they put upon him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.

27And a great multitude of the people were following Him, and of women, who were mourning and lamenting for Him. 28And having turned to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For behold, the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never did bear, and breasts that never nursed.’ 30Then

‘they will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall upon us,”

and to the hills, “Cover us.”’c

31For if they do these things in the green tree, what might take place in the dry?”

32And two other criminals also were being led away to be put to death with Him.

33And when they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right, and one on the left.

34And Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”d And they cast lots, dividing His garments.

35And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also were deriding Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself, if this is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

36And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming near, offering Him sour wine, 37and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!”

38And there was also this inscriptione over Him:

The King of the Jews.

39And one of the criminals having been hanged was railing at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!”

40And the other answering, was rebuking him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, that you are under the same judgment, 41and we indeed justly? For we are receiving things worthy of what we did, but this man did nothing wrong.” 42And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

43And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

The Death of Jesus
(Psalm 22:1-31; Matthew 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; John 19:28-30)

44And now it was about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 45The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in the middle.

46And having called out in a loud voice, Jesus said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.”f And having said this, He breathed His last.

47And having seen that which had taken place, the centurion began glorifying God, saying, “Certainly this man was righteous.” 48And all the crowds having come together to this spectacle, having seen the things that had taken place, were returning home, beating the breasts. 49And all from those who knew Him, and women, those having followed Him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

The Burial of Jesus
(Isaiah 53:9-12; Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; John 19:38-42)

50And behold, a man named Joseph, being also a Council member, a good and righteous man— 51he was not having consented to their counsel and deed—from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52He having gone to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. 53And having taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in a rock, in which no one yet had been laid. 54And it was the Day of Preparation, and Sabbath was just beginning.

55And the women who were come with Him out of Galilee, having followed, saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56And having returned, they prepared spices and anointing oils. And they rested indeed on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
