Job 38

In your days
This phrase emphasizes the limited lifespan and experience of humans compared to the eternal nature of God. It serves as a reminder of the temporal nature of human life, contrasting with God's eternal existence. This is a theme found throughout Scripture, such as in Psalm 90:2, which speaks of God's everlasting nature.

have you commanded the morning
This question highlights God's sovereign control over creation, specifically the daily cycle of day and night. The morning is depicted as something that God commands, illustrating His authority over time and nature. This echoes the creation account in Genesis 1, where God speaks light into existence. It also reflects the idea that God is actively involved in sustaining the world, as seen in Colossians 1:17, where Christ is described as holding all things together.

or assigned the dawn its place
The dawn is portrayed as having a specific role and position, determined by God. This suggests order and purpose in creation, countering any notion of randomness. The imagery of dawn is often used in Scripture to symbolize new beginnings and hope, as seen in Lamentations 3:22-23, where God's mercies are described as new every morning. The dawn can also be seen as a type of Christ, who is referred to as the "morning star" in Revelation 22:16, symbolizing His role as the bringer of light and salvation.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Job
A man of great faith and patience, Job is the central figure in the Book of Job. He undergoes severe trials and questions God's justice, leading to God's response in Job 38.

2. God
The Creator and Sustainer of the universe, God speaks to Job out of the whirlwind, challenging Job's understanding of divine wisdom and power.

3. The Morning/Dawn
Symbolic of God's control over creation, the morning and dawn represent the daily renewal and order established by God.
Teaching Points
God's Sovereignty Over Creation
God alone has the power to command the morning and assign the dawn its place, demonstrating His ultimate authority over the universe.

Human Limitations
Job is reminded of his human limitations and the vast difference between human understanding and God's infinite wisdom.

Daily Renewal and Hope
The dawn symbolizes new beginnings and the hope that comes with each new day, reflecting God's faithfulness and mercy.

Trust in God's Order
Believers are encouraged to trust in God's established order and His control over the chaos of life.

Humility Before God
Recognizing God's power should lead to humility and reverence, acknowledging our dependence on Him.(12) And caused the dayspring to know his place.--Changing, as it does, from day to day with the changing seasons.

Verse 12. - Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days? rather, by reason of ray length of days - a similar irony to that observable in vers. 5, 21, etc. The third marvel of creation brought before us is the dawn, or daybreak - that standing miracle of combined utility and beauty. Has Job authority to issue his orders to the dawn, and tell it when to make its appearance? Has he caused the dayspring to know his place? Job cannot possibly pretend to any such power.
