When Jesus realized that the Pharisees were aware He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John1Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more disciples than John
(although it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples),2(although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),
He left Judea and returned to Galilee.3he left Judea and set out once more for Galilee.
Now He had to pass through Samaria.4But he had to pass through Samaria.
So He came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.5Now he came to a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.6Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down beside the well. It was about noon.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”7A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me some water to drink."
(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)8(For his disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies.)
“You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)9So the Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you--a Jew--ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”10Jesus answered her, "If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, 'Give me some water to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."
“Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water?11"Sir," the woman said to him, "you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water?
Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?”12Surely you're not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock."
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.13Jesus replied, "Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again.
But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”14But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life."
The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”15The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water."
Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”16He said to her, "Go call your husband and come back here."
“I have no husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said to her, “You are correct to say that you have no husband.17The woman replied, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "Right you are when you said, 'I have no husband,'
In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. You have spoken truthfully.”18for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!"
“Sir,” the woman said, “I see that You are a prophet.19The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet.
Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem.”20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem."
“Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.21Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.22You people worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.
But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.23But a time is coming--and now is here--when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.
God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”24God is spirit, and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”25The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (the one called Christ); "whenever he comes, he will tell us everything."
Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”26Jesus said to her, "I, the one speaking to you, am he."
Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”27Now at that very moment his disciples came back. They were shocked because he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, "What do you want?" or "Why are you speaking with her?"
Then the woman left her water jar, went back into the town, and said to the people,28Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people,
“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”29"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can't be the Messiah, can he?"
So they left the town and made their way toward Jesus.30So they left the town and began coming to him.
Meanwhile the disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”31Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, "Rabbi, eat something."
But He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”32But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”33So the disciples began to say to one another, "No one brought him anything to eat, did they?"
Jesus explained, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.34Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work.
Do you not say, ‘There are still four months until the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are ripe for harvest.35Don't you say, 'There are four more months and then comes the harvest?' I tell you, look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest!
Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.36The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together.
For in this case the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.37For in this instance the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.'
I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.”38I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."
Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Jesus because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”39Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I ever did."
So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.40So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking him to stay with them. He stayed there two days,
And many more believed because of His message.41and because of his word many more believed.
They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”42They said to the woman, "No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world."
After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.43After the two days he departed from there to Galilee.
Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.44(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
Yet when He arrived, the Galileans welcomed Him. They had seen all the great things He had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they had gone there as well.45So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen all the things he had done in Jerusalem at the feast (for they themselves had gone to the feast).
So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.46Now he came again to Cana in Galilee where he had made the water wine. In Capernaum there was a certain royal official whose son was sick.
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.47When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.
Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”48So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders you will never believe!"
“Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”49"Sir," the official said to him, "come down before my child dies."
“Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.” The man took Jesus at His word and departed.50Jesus told him, "Go home; your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and set off for home.
And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.51While he was on his way down, his slaves met him and told him that his son was going to live.
So he inquired as to the hour when his son had recovered, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.”52So he asked them the time when his condition began to improve, and they told him, "Yesterday at one o'clock in the afternoon the fever left him."
Then the father realized that this was the very hour in which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and all his household believed.53Then the father realized that it was the very time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he himself believed along with his entire household.
This was now the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.54Jesus did this as his second miraculous sign when he returned from Judea to Galilee.
