Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.1Then Pilate had Jesus taken away and whipped.
The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe.2The soldiers twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, put it on his head, and threw a purple robe on him.
And they kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews! ” and were slapping his face.3They kept coming up to him and saying, "Long live the king of the Jews!" Then they began to slap him on the face.
Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.”4Pilate went outside again and told the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."
Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man! ”5Then Jesus came outside, wearing the victor's crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate told them, "Here is the man!"
When the chief priests and the temple servants saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify! ” Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.”6When the high priests and the officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate told them, "You take him and crucify him. I find no basis for a charge against him."
“We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”7The Jewish leaders answered Pilate, "We have a law, and according to that Law he must die because he made himself out to be the Son of God."
When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever.8When Pilate heard this, he became even more afraid.
He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, “Where are you from? ” But Jesus did not give him an answer.9Returning to his headquarters, he asked Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus did not answer him.
So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you? ”10So Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to speak to me? You realize, don't you, that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?"
“You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”11Jesus answered him, "You have no authority over me at all, except what was given to you from above. That's why the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."
From that moment Pilate kept trying to release him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar! ”12From then on, Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you release this fellow, you're not a friend of Caesar! Anyone who claims to be a king is defying Caesar!"
When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Aramaic, Gabbatha ).13When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat in a place called The Pavement, which in Hebrew is called Gabbatha.
It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon. Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king! ”14Now it was the Preparation Day for the Passover, about noon. He told the Jewish leaders, "Here is your king!"
They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him! ” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king? ” “We have no king but Caesar! ” the chief priests answered.15Then they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate asked them, "Should I crucify your king?" The high priests responded, "We have no king but Caesar!"
Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away.16Then Pilate handed him over to be crucified, and they took Jesus away.
Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.17Carrying the cross all by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.
There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.18There they crucified him, along with two others, one on each side of him with Jesus in the middle.
Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: JESUS OF NAZARETH, the KING of the JEWS.19Pilate wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, "Jesus from Nazareth, the King of the Jews."
Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.20Many Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’ ”21Then the Jewish high priests told Pilate, "Don't write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that this fellow said, 'I am the King of the Jews.'"
Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.”22Pilate replied, "What I have written I have written."
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top.23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, and took his cloak as well. The cloak was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down.
So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did.24So they told each other, "Let's not tear it. Instead, let's throw dice to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture that says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they threw dice." So that is what the soldiers did.
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.25Meanwhile, standing near Jesus' cross were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he kept loving standing there, he told his mother, "Dear lady, here is your son."
Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.27Then he told the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.”28After this, when Jesus realized that everything was now completed, he said (in order to fulfill the Scripture), "I'm thirsty."
A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth.29A jar of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth.
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.30After Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.
Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away.31Since it was the Preparation Day, the Jewish leaders did not want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath, because that was a particularly important Sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the men's legs broken and the bodies removed.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him.32So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with him.
When they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead.33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water immediately came out.
He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.35The one who saw this has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows he is telling the truth so that you, too, may believe,
For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken.36because these things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "None of his bones will be broken."
Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the one they pierced.37In addition, another passage of Scripture says, "They will look on the one whom they pierced."
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus --but secretly because of his fear of the Jews --asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away.38Later on, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (though a secret one because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, and he came and removed his body.
Nicodemus (who had previously come to him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes.39Nicodemus, the man who had first come to Jesus at night, also arrived, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about 100 litra.
They took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the fragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.40They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths along with spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.
There was a garden in the place where he was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it.41A garden was located in the place where he was crucified, and in that garden was a new tomb in which no one had yet been placed.
They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish day of preparation and since the tomb was nearby.42Because it was the Jewish Preparation Day, and because the tomb was nearby, they put Jesus there.
