Now we who are strong have an obligation to bear the weaknesses of those without strength, and not to please ourselves. | 1But we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not just please ourselves. |
Each one of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. | 2Let each of us please his neighbor for his good to build him up. |
For even Christ did not please himself. On the contrary, as it is written, The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. | 3For even Christ did not please himself, but just as it is written, "The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me." |
For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures. | 4For everything that was written in former times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and through encouragement of the scriptures we may have hope. |
Now may the God who gives endurance and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, according to Christ Jesus, | 5Now may the God of endurance and comfort give you unity with one another in accordance with Christ Jesus, |
so that you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with one mind and one voice. | 6so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Therefore accept one another, just as Christ also accepted you, to the glory of God. | 7Receive one another, then, just as Christ also received you, to God's glory. |
For I say that Christ became a servant of the circumcised on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises to the fathers, | 8For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of God's truth to confirm the promises made to the fathers, |
and so that Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praise to your name. | 9and thus the Gentiles glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to your name." |
Again it says, Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people! | 10And again it says: "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people." |
And again, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; let all the peoples praise him! | 11And again, "Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him." |
And again, Isaiah says, The root of Jesse will appear, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; the Gentiles will hope in him. | 12And again Isaiah says, "The root of Jesse will come, and the one who rises to rule over the Gentiles, in him will the Gentiles hope." |
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. | 13Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in him, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. |
My brothers and sisters, I myself am convinced about you that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another. | 14But I myself am fully convinced about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another. |
Nevertheless, I have written to remind you more boldly on some points because of the grace given me by God | 15But I have written more boldly to you on some points so as to remind you, because of the grace given to me by God |
to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, serving as a priest of the gospel of God. My purpose is that the Gentiles may be an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. | 16to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I serve the gospel of God like a priest, so that the Gentiles may become an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. |
Therefore I have reason to boast in Christ Jesus regarding what pertains to God. | 17So I boast in Christ Jesus about the things that pertain to God. |
For I would not dare say anything except what Christ has accomplished through me by word and deed for the obedience of the Gentiles, | 18For I will not dare to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in order to bring about the obedience of the Gentiles, by word and deed, |
by the power of miraculous signs and wonders, and by the power of God's Spirit. As a result, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum. | 19in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem even as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. |
My aim is to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named, so that I will not build on someone else's foundation, | 20And in this way I desire to preach where Christ has not been named, so as not to build on another person's foundation, |
but, as it is written, Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand. | 21but as it is written: "Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand." |
That is why I have been prevented many times from coming to you. | 22This is the reason I was often hindered from coming to you. |
But now I no longer have any work to do in these regions, and I have strongly desired for many years to come to you | 23But now there is nothing more to keep me in these regions, and I have for many years desired to come to you |
whenever I travel to Spain. For I hope to see you when I pass through and to be assisted by you for my journey there, once I have first enjoyed your company for a while. | 24when I go to Spain. For I hope to visit you when I pass through and that you will help me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while. |
Right now I am traveling to Jerusalem to serve the saints, | 25But now I go to Jerusalem to minister to the saints. |
because Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. | 26For Macedonia and Achaia are pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. |
Yes, they were pleased, and indeed are indebted to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual benefits, then they are obligated to minister to them in material needs. | 27For they were pleased to do this, and indeed they are indebted to the Jerusalem saints. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are obligated also to minister to them in material things. |
So when I have finished this and safely delivered the funds to them, I will visit you on the way to Spain. | 28Therefore after I have completed this and have safely delivered this bounty to them, I will set out for Spain by way of you, |
I know that when I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ. | 29and I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of Christ's blessing. |
Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, through our Lord Jesus Christ and through the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in fervent prayers to God on my behalf. | 30Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, through our Lord Jesus Christ and through the love of the Spirit, to join fervently with me in prayer to God on my behalf. |
Pray that I may be rescued from the unbelievers in Judea, that my ministry to Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, | 31Pray that I may be rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea and that my ministry in Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, |
and that, by God's will, I may come to you with joy and be refreshed together with you. | 32so that by God's will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. |
May the God of peace be with all of you. Amen. | 33Now may the God of peace be with all of you. Amen. |
