As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.4As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one shouting in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways,5Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low, and the crooked will be made straight, and the rough ways will be made smooth,
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”6and all humanity will see the salvation of God.'"
He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?7So John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.8Therefore produce fruit that proves your repentance, and don't begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!
Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”9Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?”10So the crowds were asking him, "What then should we do?"
And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”11John answered them, "The person who has two tunics must share with the person who has none, and the person who has food must do likewise."
Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”12Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"
And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.”13He told them, "Collect no more than you are required to."
Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”14Then some soldiers also asked him, "And as for us--what should we do?" He told them, "Take money from no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your pay."
As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ,15While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ,
John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.16John answered them all, "I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming--I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”17His winnowing fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire."
So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people.18And in this way, with many other exhortations, John proclaimed good news to the people.
But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done,19But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the evil deeds that he had done,
added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.20Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison.
Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened,21Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. And while he was praying, the heavens opened,
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”22and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.
