Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness. | 6We have sinned like our ancestors; we have done wrong, we have done evil. |
Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. | 7Our ancestors in Egypt failed to appreciate your miraculous deeds, they failed to remember your many acts of loyal love, and they rebelled at the sea, by the Red Sea. |
Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make known his mighty power. | 8Yet he delivered them for the sake of his reputation, that he might reveal his power. |
He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry, and he led them through the deep as through a desert. | 9He shouted at the Red Sea and it dried up; he led them through the deep water as if it were a desert. |
So he saved them from the hand of the foe and redeemed them from the power of the enemy. | 10He delivered them from the power of the one who hated them, and rescued them from the power of the enemy. |
And the waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left. | 11The water covered their enemies; not even one of them survived. |
Then they believed his words; they sang his praise. | 12They believed his promises; they sang praises to him. |
But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel. | 13They quickly forgot what he had done; they did not wait for his instructions. |
But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness, and put God to the test in the desert; | 14In the wilderness they had an insatiable craving for meat; they challenged God in the desert. |

the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram. | 17The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it engulfed the group led by Abiram. |
Fire also broke out in their company; the flame burned up the wicked. | 18Fire burned their group; the flames scorched the wicked. |
They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped a metal image. | 19They made an image of a calf at Horeb, and worshiped a metal idol. |
They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass. | 20They traded their majestic God for the image of an ox that eats grass. |
They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, | 21They rejected the God who delivered them, the one who performed great deeds in Egypt, |
wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. | 22amazing feats in the land of Ham, mighty acts by the Red Sea. |
Therefore he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them. | 23He threatened to destroy them, but Moses, his chosen one, interceded with him and turned back his destructive anger. |
Then they despised the pleasant land, having no faith in his promise. | 24They rejected the fruitful land; they did not believe his promise. |
They murmured in their tents, and did not obey the voice of the LORD. | 25They grumbled in their tents; they did not obey the LORD. |
Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them that he would make them fall in the wilderness, | 26So he made a solemn vow that he would make them die in the desert, |
and would make their offspring fall among the nations, scattering them among the lands. | 27make their descendants die among the nations, and scatter them among foreign lands. |
Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead; | 28They worshiped Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead. |
they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them. | 29They made the LORD angry by their actions, and a plague broke out among them. |
Then Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stayed. | 30Phinehas took a stand and intervened, and the plague subsided. |
And that was counted to him as righteousness from generation to generation forever. | 31This brought him a reward, an eternal gift. |
They angered him at the waters of Meribah, and it went ill with Moses on their account, | 32They made him angry by the waters of Meribah, and Moses suffered because of them, |
for they made his spirit bitter, and he spoke rashly with his lips. | 33for they aroused his temper, and he spoke rashly. |
They did not destroy the peoples, as the LORD commanded them, | 34They did not destroy the nations, as the LORD had commanded them to do. |
but they mixed with the nations and learned to do as they did. | 35They mixed in with the nations and learned their ways. |
They served their idols, which became a snare to them. | 36They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them. |

The land was polluted by bloodshed. |
Thus they became unclean by their acts, and played the whore in their deeds. | 39They were defiled by their deeds, and unfaithful in their actions. |
Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, and he abhorred his heritage; | 40So the LORD was angry with his people and despised the people who belong to him. |
he gave them into the hand of the nations, so that those who hated them ruled over them. | 41He handed them over to the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them. |
Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power. | 42Their enemies oppressed them; they were subject to their authority. |
Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes and were brought low through their iniquity. | 43Many times he delivered them, but they had a rebellious attitude, and degraded themselves by their sin. |
Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress, when he heard their cry. | 44Yet he took notice of their distress, when he heard their cry for help. |
For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. | 45He remembered his covenant with them, and relented because of his great loyal love. |
He caused them to be pitied by all those who held them captive. | 46He caused all their conquerors to have pity on them. |
Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. | 47Deliver us, O LORD, our God! Gather us from among the nations! Then we will give thanks to your holy name, and boast about your praiseworthy deeds. |
Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! And let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the LORD! | 48The LORD God of Israel deserves praise, in the future and forevermore. Let all the people say, "We agree! Praise the LORD!" |
