Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went abroad. 1Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a wine vat, and built a watchtower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey.
At the right time, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect from them a share of the produce from the vineyard. 2At harvest time, he sent a servant to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard.
But the farmers grabbed the servant, beat him, and sent him back empty-handed. 3But they seized the servant, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.
Again, the man sent another servant to them. They beat the servant over the head and treated him shamefully. 4Then he sent them another servant, and they struck him over the head and treated him shamefully.
Then the man sent another, and that one they killed. So it was with many other servants. Some of these they beat, and others they killed. 5He sent still another, and this one they killed. He sent many others; some they beat and others they killed.
He still had one more person to send, a son whom he loved. Finally, he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' 6Finally, having one beloved son, he sent him to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
But those farmers told one another, 'This is the heir. Come on, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!' 7But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’
So they grabbed him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.8So they seized the son, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
"Now what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, execute the farmers, and give the vineyard to others. 9What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants, and will give the vineyard to others.
Haven't you ever read this Scripture: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 10Have you never read this Scripture: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
This was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes'?" 11This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
They were trying to arrest him but were afraid of the crowd. Realizing that he had spoken this parable against them, they left him alone and went away.12At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
Then they sent some Pharisees and some Herodians to him, intending to trap him in what he said. 13Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to catch Jesus in His words.
They came and told him, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere. You don't favor any individual, because you pay no attention to external appearance. Rather, you teach the way of God truthfully. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or shouldn't we?"14“Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are honest and seek favor from no one. Indeed, You are impartial and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or not?”
Seeing through their hypocrisy, Jesus replied to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."15But Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to inspect.”
So they brought one. Then he asked them, "Whose face and name are on this?" They told him, "Caesar's."16So they brought it, and He asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they answered.
So Jesus told them, "Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were utterly amazed at him.17Then Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” And they marveled at Him.
Then some Sadducees, who claim there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him, 18Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and questioned Him:
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, he should marry the widow and have children for his brother.19“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.
There were seven brothers. The first one married and died without having children. 20Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died, leaving no children.
Then the second married her and died without having children, and so did the third. 21Then the second one married the widow, but he also died and left no children. And the third did likewise.
None of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died, too. 22In this way, none of the seven left any children. And last of all, the woman died.
In the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since all seven had married her?" 23In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For all seven were married to her.”
Jesus answered them, "Aren't you mistaken because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power? 24Jesus said to them, “Aren’t you mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
When people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in heaven. 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.
As for the dead being raised, haven't you read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush, how God said, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?26But concerning the dead rising, have you not read about the burning bush in the Book of Moses, how God told him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!"27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
Then one of the scribes came near and heard the Sadducees arguing with one another. He saw how well Jesus answered them, so he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of them all?"28Now one of the scribes had come up and heard their debate. Noticing how well Jesus had answered them, he asked Him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”
Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord,29Jesus replied, “This is the most important: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.
and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The second is this: 'You must love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these."31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
Then the scribe told him, "Well said, Teacher! You have told the truth that 'God is one, and there is no other besides him.'32“Right, Teacher,” the scribe replied. “You have stated correctly that God is One and there is no other but Him,
To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices."33and to love Him with all your heart and with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, which is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
When Jesus saw how wisely the man answered, he told him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one dared to ask him another question.34When Jesus saw that the man had answered wisely, He said, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to question Him any further.
While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he asked, "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is David's son? 35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, He asked, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?
David himself said by the Holy Spirit, 'The Lord told my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet."' 36Speaking by the Holy Spirit, David himself declared: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.” ’
David himself calls him 'Lord,' so how can he be his son?" And the large crowd kept listening to him with delight.37David himself calls Him ‘Lord.’ So how can He be David’s son?” And the large crowd listened to Him with delight.
As he taught, he said, "Beware of the scribes! They like to walk around in long robes, to be greeted in the marketplaces, 38In His teaching Jesus also said, “Watch out for the scribes. They like to walk around in long robes, to receive greetings in the marketplaces,
and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 39and to have the chief seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
They devour widows' houses and say long prayers to cover it up. They will receive greater condemnation!"40They defraud widows of their houses, and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will receive greater condemnation.”
As Jesus sat facing the offering box, he watched how the crowd was dropping their money into it. Many rich people were dropping in large amounts. 41As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury, He watched the crowd putting money into it. And many rich people put in large amounts.
Then a destitute widow came and dropped in two small copper coins, worth about a cent.42Then one poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amounted to a small fraction of a denarius.
He called his disciples and told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, this destitute widow has dropped in more than everyone who is contributing to the offering box, 43Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more than all the others into the treasury.
because all of them contributed out of their surplus, but out of her poverty she has given everything she had to live on."44For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
