Then Jesus began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went abroad. 1Then He began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug out a pit for a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away.
At the right time, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect from them a share of the produce from the vineyard. 2At harvest time he sent a slave to the farmers to collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the farmers.
But the farmers grabbed the servant, beat him, and sent him back empty-handed. 3But they took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.
Again, the man sent another servant to them. They beat the servant over the head and treated him shamefully. 4Again he sent another slave to them, and they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully.
Then the man sent another, and that one they killed. So it was with many other servants. Some of these they beat, and others they killed. 5Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; they beat some and they killed some.
He still had one more person to send, a son whom he loved. Finally, he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' 6"He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, They will respect my son.'
But those farmers told one another, 'This is the heir. Come on, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!' 7"But those tenant farmers said among themselves, This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!'
So they grabbed him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.8So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
"Now what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come, execute the farmers, and give the vineyard to others. 9"Therefore, what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers and give the vineyard to others.
Haven't you ever read this Scripture: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. 10Haven't you read this Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
This was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes'?" 11This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes?"
They were trying to arrest him but were afraid of the crowd. Realizing that he had spoken this parable against them, they left him alone and went away.12Because they knew He had said this parable against them, they were looking for a way to arrest Him, but they were afraid of the crowd. So they left Him and went away.
Then they sent some Pharisees and some Herodians to him, intending to trap him in what he said. 13Then they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to Him to trap Him by what He said.
They came and told him, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere. You don't favor any individual, because you pay no attention to external appearance. Rather, you teach the way of God truthfully. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them or shouldn't we?"14When they came, they said to Him, "Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don't show partiality but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
Seeing through their hypocrisy, Jesus replied to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."15Should we pay, or should we not pay?" But knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, "Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at."
So they brought one. Then he asked them, "Whose face and name are on this?" They told him, "Caesar's."16So they brought one. "Whose image and inscription is this?" He asked them." Caesar's," they said.
So Jesus told them, "Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were utterly amazed at him.17Then Jesus told them, "Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at Him.
Then some Sadducees, who claim there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him, 18Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and questioned Him: "
"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no child, he should marry the widow and have children for his brother.19Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaves his wife behind, and leaves no child, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother.
There were seven brothers. The first one married and died without having children. 20There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying, left no offspring.
Then the second married her and died without having children, and so did the third. 21The second also took her, and he died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise.
None of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died, too. 22So the seven left no offspring. Last of all, the woman died too.
In the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since all seven had married her?" 23In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be, since the seven had married her?"
Jesus answered them, "Aren't you mistaken because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power? 24Jesus told them, "Are you not deceived because you don't know the Scriptures or the power of God?
When people rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in heaven. 25For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven.
As for the dead being raised, haven't you read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush, how God said, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?26Now concerning the dead being raised--haven't you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?
He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!"27He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are badly deceived."
Then one of the scribes came near and heard the Sadducees arguing with one another. He saw how well Jesus answered them, so he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of them all?"28One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked Him, "Which command is the most important of all?"
Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord,29"This is the most important," Jesus answered: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is One.
and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.'30Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
The second is this: 'You must love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these."31"The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these."
Then the scribe told him, "Well said, Teacher! You have told the truth that 'God is one, and there is no other besides him.'32Then the scribe said to Him, "You are right, Teacher! You have correctly said that He is One, and there is no one else except Him.
To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices."33And to love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices."
When Jesus saw how wisely the man answered, he told him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that, no one dared to ask him another question.34When Jesus saw that he answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to question Him any longer.
While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he asked, "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is David's son? 35So Jesus asked this question as He taught in the temple complex, "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the Son of David?
David himself said by the Holy Spirit, 'The Lord told my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet."' 36David himself says by the Holy Spirit: The Lord declared to my Lord, Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.'
David himself calls him 'Lord,' so how can he be his son?" And the large crowd kept listening to him with delight.37David himself calls Him 'Lord; how then can the Messiah be his Son?" And the large crowd was listening to Him with delight.
As he taught, he said, "Beware of the scribes! They like to walk around in long robes, to be greeted in the marketplaces, 38He also said in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes, and who want greetings in the marketplaces,
and to have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 39the front seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.
They devour widows' houses and say long prayers to cover it up. They will receive greater condemnation!"40They devour widows' houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher punishment."
As Jesus sat facing the offering box, he watched how the crowd was dropping their money into it. Many rich people were dropping in large amounts. 41Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums.
Then a destitute widow came and dropped in two small copper coins, worth about a cent.42And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little.
He called his disciples and told them, "I tell all of you with certainty, this destitute widow has dropped in more than everyone who is contributing to the offering box, 43Summoning His disciples, He said to them, "I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury.
because all of them contributed out of their surplus, but out of her poverty she has given everything she had to live on."44For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed--all she had to live on."
