John 11
KJV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleEnglish Standard Version
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)2It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.”
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.4But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.6So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?8The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?”
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.11After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.12The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.14Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died,
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.16So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.17Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:18Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off,
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.
Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.22But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.27She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.29And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.31When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.32Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.
And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.34And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”
Jesus wept.35Jesus wept.
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!36So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.”
Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.41So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”
And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.44The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him,
But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.47So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.
If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all.
Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.50Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”
And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;51He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.52and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.53So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.54Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.
And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.
Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?56They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
