Luke 6
KJV Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleInternational Standard Version
And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.1One time Jesus was walking through some grain fields on a Sabbath. His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?2Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what isn't lawful on Sabbath days?"
And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;3Jesus answered them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions became hungry?
How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?4How was it that he went into the house of God, took the Bread of the Presence and ate it, which was not lawful for anyone but the priests to eat, and then gave some of it to his companions?"
And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.5Then he told them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.6Once, on another Sabbath, Jesus went into a synagogue and began teaching. A man whose right hand was paralyzed was there.
And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.7The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, in order to find a way of accusing him of doing something wrong.
But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.8But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he told the man with the paralyzed hand, "Get up, and stand in the middle of the synagogue." So he got up and stood there.
Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?9Then Jesus asked them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?"
And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.10He looked around at all of them and then told the man, "Hold out your hand." The man did so, and his hand was restored to health.
And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.11The others were furious and began to discuss with each other what they could do to Jesus.
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.12Now it was in those days that Jesus went to a mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;13When daylight came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also called apostles:
Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,14Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,15Matthew, Thomas, James (the son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the Zealot),
And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.16Judas (the son of James), and Judas Iscariot (who became a traitor).
And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;17Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place, along with many of his disciples and a large gathering of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.
And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.18They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Even those who were being tormented by unclean spirits were being healed.
And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.19The entire crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing all of them.
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.20Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said, "How blessed are you who are destitute, because the kingdom of God is yours!
Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.21How blessed are you who are hungry now, because you will be satisfied! How blessed are you who are crying now, because you will laugh!
Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.22"How blessed are you whenever people hate you, avoid you, insult you, and slander you because of the Son of Man!
Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because your reward in heaven is great! That's the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.
But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.24"But how terrible it will be for you who are rich, because you have had your comfort!
Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.25How terrible it will be for you who are full now, because you will be hungry! How terrible it will be for you who are laughing now, because you will mourn and cry!
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.26"How terrible it will be for you when everyone says nice things about you, because that's the way their ancestors used to treat the false prophets!"
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,27"But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.
Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.28Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who insult you.
And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.29If someone strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other one as well, and if someone takes your coat, don't keep back your shirt, either.
Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.30Keep on giving to everyone who asks you for something, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not insist on getting it back.
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.31Whatever you want people to do for you, do the same for them.
For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.32"If you love those who love you, what thanks do you deserve? Why, even sinners love those who love them.
And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.33If you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you deserve? Even sinners do that.
And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.34If you lend to those from whom you expect to get something back, what thanks do you deserve? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back what they lend.
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.35Rather, love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind even to ungrateful and evil people.
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:37"Stop judging, and you'll never be judged. Stop condemning, and you'll never be condemned. Forgive, and you'll be forgiven.
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.38Give, and it will be given to you. A large quantity, pressed together, shaken down, and running over will be put into your lap, because you'll be evaluated by the same standard with which you evaluate others."
And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?39He also told them a parable: "One blind person can't lead another blind person, can he? Both will fall into a ditch, won't they?
The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.40A disciple is not better than his teacher. But everyone who is fully-trained will be like his teacher.
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?41"Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.42How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you don't see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you'll see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.43"A good tree doesn't produce rotten fruit, and a rotten tree doesn't produce good fruit,
For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.44because every tree is known by its own fruit. People don't gather figs from thorny plants or pick grapes from a thorn bush.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.45A good person produces good from the good treasure of his heart, and an evil person produces evil from an evil treasure, because the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart."
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?46"Why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord,' but don't do what I tell you?
Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:47I will show you what everyone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them.
He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.48They are like a person building a house, who dug a deep hole to lay the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the floodwaters pushed against that house but couldn't shake it, because it had been founded on the rock.
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.49But the person who hears what I say but doesn't act on it is like someone who built a house on the ground without any foundation. When the floodwaters pushed against it, that house quickly collapsed, and the resulting destruction of that house was extensive."
