King James BibleNET Bible
And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.1Jesus was going through the grain fields on a Sabbath, and his disciples picked some heads of wheat, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.
And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?2But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is against the law on the Sabbath?"
And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;3Jesus answered them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry--
How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?4how he entered the house of God, took and ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for any to eat but the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?"
And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.5Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath."
And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.6On another Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching. Now a man was there whose right hand was withered.
And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.7The experts in the law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find a reason to accuse him.
But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.8But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Get up and stand here." So he rose and stood there.
Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?9Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?"
And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.10After looking around at them all, he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." The man did so, and his hand was restored.
And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.11But they were filled with mindless rage and began debating with one another what they would do to Jesus.
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.12Now it was during this time that Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent all night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;13When morning came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles:
Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,14Simon (whom he named Peter), and his brother Andrew; and James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,15Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,
And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.16Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;17Then he came down with them and stood on a level place. And a large number of his disciples had gathered along with a vast multitude from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon. They came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases,
And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.18and those who suffered from unclean spirits were cured.
And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.19The whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.20Then he looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God belongs to you.
Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.21"Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. "Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.22"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject you as evil on account of the Son of Man!
Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.23Rejoice in that day, and jump for joy, because your reward is great in heaven. For their ancestors did the same things to the prophets.
But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.24"But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort already.
Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.25"Woe to you who are well satisfied with food now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.26"Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for their ancestors did the same things to the false prophets.
But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,27"But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.29To the person who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other as well, and from the person who takes away your coat, do not withhold your tunic either.
Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.30Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your possessions back from the person who takes them away.
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.31Treat others in the same way that you would want them to treat you.
For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.32"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.34And if you lend to those from whom you hope to be repaid, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, so that they may be repaid in full.
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.35But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to ungrateful and evil people.
Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:37"Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.38Give, and it will be given to you: A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into your lap. For the measure you use will be the measure you receive."
And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?39He also told them a parable: "Someone who is blind cannot lead another who is blind, can he? Won't they both fall into a pit?
The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.40A disciple is not greater than his teacher, but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher.
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?41Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye, but fail to see the beam of wood in your own?
Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.42How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me remove the speck from your eye,' while you yourself don't see the beam in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.43"For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,
For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.44for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from brambles.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.45The good person out of the good treasury of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasury produces evil, for his mouth speaks from what fills his heart.
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?46"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do what I tell you?
Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:47"Everyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice--I will show you what he is like:
He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.48He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep, and laid the foundation on bedrock. When a flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.49But the person who hears and does not put my words into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against that house, it collapsed immediately, and was utterly destroyed!"
