Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain.1One Sabbath Jesus was passing through the grainfields, and His disciples began to pick the heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them.
But some of the Pharisees said, "Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"2But some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
And Jesus answering them said, "Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,3Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?"4He entered the house of God, took the consecrated bread and gave it to his companions, and ate what is lawful only for the priests to eat.”
And He was saying to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."5Then Jesus declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.6On another Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered.
The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.7Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He would heal on the Sabbath.
But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!" And he got up and came forward.8But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and stand among us.” So he got up and stood there.
And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?"9Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
After looking around at them all, He said to him, "Stretch out your hand!" And he did so; and his hand was restored.10And after looking around at all of them, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and it was restored.
But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.11But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.12In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God.
And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:13When daylight came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles:
Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;14Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;
and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;15Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot;
Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.16Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,17Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples was there, along with a great number of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon.
who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured.18They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed.
And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.19The entire crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all.
And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.20Looking up at His disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
"Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.21Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
"Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.22Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man.
"Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets.23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For their fathers treated the prophets in the same way.
"But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full.24But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.
"Woe to you who are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.25Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
"Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way.26Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way.
"But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,27But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
"Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.29If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well.
"Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back.
"Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.31Do to others as you would have them do to you.
"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.32If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
"If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.33If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
"If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.
"But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.37Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
"Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure-- pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return."38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”
And He also spoke a parable to them: "A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?39Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
"A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
"Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?41Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
"Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.42How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while you yourself fail to see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
"For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit.43No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
"For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.44For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles.
"The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.45The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.
"Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?46Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I say?
"Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:47I will show you what he is like who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them:
he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.48He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid his foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the torrent crashed against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
"But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great."49But the one who hears My words and does not act on them is like a man who built his house on ground without a foundation. The torrent crashed against that house, and immediately it fell—and great was its destruction!”
