| 1Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers' households of the sons of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the city of David, which is Zion. | 1At that time Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, all the tribal heads and the ancestral leaders of the Israelites before him at Jerusalem in order to bring the ark of the LORD's covenant from the city of David, that is Zion. |
| 2All the men of Israel assembled themselves to King Solomon at the feast, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month. | 2So all the men of Israel were assembled in the presence of King Solomon in the seventh month, the month of Ethanim, at the festival. |

| 10It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, the cloud filled the house of the LORD, | 10When the priests came out of the holy place, the cloud filled the LORD's temple, |
| 11so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD. | 11and because of the cloud, the priests were not able to continue ministering, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple. |
| 12Then Solomon said, "The LORD has said that He would dwell in the thick cloud. | 12Then Solomon said: The LORD said that He would dwell in thick darkness. |
| 13"I have surely built You a lofty house, A place for Your dwelling forever." | 13I have indeed built an exalted temple for You, a place for Your dwelling forever. |
| 14Then the king faced about and blessed all the assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing. | 14The king turned around and blessed the entire congregation of Israel while they were standing. |
| 15He said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who spoke with His mouth to my father David and has fulfilled it with His hand, saying, | 15He said: May the LORD God of Israel be praised! He spoke directly to my father David, and He has fulfilled the promise by His power. He said," |
| 16Since the day that I brought My people Israel from Egypt, I did not choose a city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house that My name might be there, but I chose David to be over My people Israel.' | 16Since the day I brought My people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city to build a temple in among any of the tribes of Israel, so that My name would be there. But I have chosen David to rule My people Israel." |
| 17"Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. | 17It was in the desire of my father David to build a temple for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. |
| 18"But the LORD said to my father David, 'Because it was in your heart to build a house for My name, you did well that it was in your heart. | 18But the LORD said to my father David," Since it was your desire to build a temple for My name, you have done well to have this desire. |
| 19'Nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son who will be born to you, he will build the house for My name.' | 19Yet you are not the one to build it; instead, your son, your own offspring, will build it for My name." |
| 20"Now the LORD has fulfilled His word which He spoke; for I have risen in place of my father David and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. | 20The LORD has fulfilled what He promised. I have taken the place of my father David, and I sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised. I have built the temple for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. |
| 21"There I have set a place for the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD, which He made with our fathers when He brought them from the land of Egypt." | 21I have provided a place there for the ark, where the LORD's covenant is that He made with our ancestors when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. |
| 22Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven. | 22Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the entire congregation of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven. |
| 23He said, "O LORD, the God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing lovingkindness to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart, | 23He said: LORD God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth below, keeping the gracious covenant with Your servants who walk before You with their whole heart. |
| 24who have kept with Your servant, my father David, that which You have promised him; indeed, You have spoken with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand as it is this day. | 24You have kept what You promised to Your servant, my father David. You spoke directly to him and You fulfilled Your promise by Your power as it is today. |
| 25"Now therefore, O LORD, the God of Israel, keep with Your servant David my father that which You have promised him, saying, 'You shall not lack a man to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way to walk before Me as you have walked.' | 25Therefore, LORD God of Israel, keep what You promised to Your servant, my father David: You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons guard their walk before Me as you have walked before Me. |
| 26"Now therefore, O God of Israel, let Your word, I pray, be confirmed which You have spoken to Your servant, my father David. | 26Now LORD God of Israel, please confirm what You promised to Your servant, my father David. |
| 27"But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built! | 27But will God indeed live on earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built. |
| 28"Yet have regard to the prayer of Your servant and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which Your servant prays before You today; | 28Listen to Your servant's prayer and his petition, LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant prays before You today, |
| 29that Your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, toward the place of which You have said, 'My name shall be there,' to listen to the prayer which Your servant shall pray toward this place. | 29so that Your eyes may watch over this temple night and day, toward the place where You said: My name will be there, and so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place. |
| 30"Listen to the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place; hear in heaven Your dwelling place; hear and forgive. | 30Hear the petition of Your servant and Your people Israel, which they pray toward this place. May You hear in Your dwelling place in heaven. May You hear and forgive. |
| 31"If a man sins against his neighbor and is made to take an oath, and he comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this house, | 31When a man sins against his neighbor and is forced to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before Your altar in this temple, |
| 32then hear in heaven and act and judge Your servants, condemning the wicked by bringing his way on his own head and justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness. | 32may You hear in heaven and act. May You judge Your servants, condemning the wicked man by bringing what he has done on his own head and providing justice for the righteous by rewarding him according to his righteousness. |
| 33"When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy, because they have sinned against You, if they turn to You again and confess Your name and pray and make supplication to You in this house, | 33When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy, because they have sinned against You, and they return to You and praise Your name, and they pray and plead with You for mercy in this temple, |
| 34then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their fathers. | 34may You hear in heaven and forgive the sin of Your people Israel. May You restore them to the land You gave their ancestors. |
| 35"When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name and turn from their sin when You afflict them, | 35When the skies are shut and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and praise Your name, and they turn from their sins because You are afflicting them, |
| 36then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants and of Your people Israel, indeed, teach them the good way in which they should walk. And send rain on Your land, which You have given Your people for an inheritance. | 36may You hear in heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants and Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way they should walk in. May You send rain on Your land that You gave Your people for an inheritance. |
| 37"If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, locust or grasshopper, if their enemy besieges them in the land of their cities, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is, | 37When there is famine on the earth, when there is pestilence, when there is blight, mildew, locust, or grasshopper, when their enemy besieges them in the region of their fortified cities, when there is any plague or illness, |
| 38whatever prayer or supplication is made by any man or by all Your people Israel, each knowing the affliction of his own heart, and spreading his hands toward this house; | 38whatever prayer or petition anyone from Your people Israel might have-- each man knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple-- |
| 39then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive and act and render to each according to all his ways, whose heart You know, for You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men, | 39may You hear in heaven, Your dwelling place, and may You forgive, act, and repay the man, according to all his ways, since You know his heart, for You alone know every human heart, |
| 40that they may fear You all the days that they live in the land which You have given to our fathers. | 40so that they may fear You all the days they live on the land You gave our ancestors. |
| 41"Also concerning the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel, when he comes from a far country for Your name's sake | 41Even for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your name-- |
| 42(for they will hear of Your great name and Your mighty hand, and of Your outstretched arm); when he comes and prays toward this house, | 42for they will hear of Your great name, mighty hand, and outstretched arm, and will come and pray toward this temple-- |
| 43hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know Your name, to fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by Your name. | 43may You hear in heaven, Your dwelling place, and do according to all the foreigner asks You for. Then all the people on earth will know Your name, to fear You as Your people Israel do and know that this temple I have built is called by Your name. |
| 44"When Your people go out to battle against their enemy, by whatever way You shall send them, and they pray to the LORD toward the city which You have chosen and the house which I have built for Your name, | 44When Your people go out to fight against their enemies, wherever You send them, and they pray to Yahweh in the direction of the city You have chosen and the temple I have built for Your name, |
| 45then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause. | 45may You hear their prayer and petition in heaven and uphold their cause. |
| 46"When they sin against You (for there is no man who does not sin) and You are angry with them and deliver them to an enemy, so that they take them away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near; | 46When they sin against You-- for there is no one who does not sin-- and You are angry with them and hand them over to the enemy, and their captors deport them to the enemy's country-- whether distant or nearby-- |
| 47if they take thought in the land where they have been taken captive, and repent and make supplication to You in the land of those who have taken them captive, saying, 'We have sinned and have committed iniquity, we have acted wickedly'; | 47and when they come to their senses in the land where they were deported and repent and petition You in their captors' land:" We have sinned and done wrong; we have been wicked," |
| 48if they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who have taken them captive, and pray to You toward their land which You have given to their fathers, the city which You have chosen, and the house which I have built for Your name; | 48and when they return to You with their whole mind and heart in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and when they pray to You in the direction of their land that You gave their ancestors, the city You have chosen, and the temple I have built for Your name, |
| 49then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven Your dwelling place, and maintain their cause, | 49may You hear in heaven, Your dwelling place, their prayer and petition and uphold their cause. |
| 50and forgive Your people who have sinned against You and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You, and make them objects of compassion before those who have taken them captive, that they may have compassion on them | 50May You forgive Your people who sinned against You and all their rebellions against You, and may You give them compassion in the eyes of their captors, so that they may be compassionate to them. |
| 51(for they are Your people and Your inheritance which You have brought forth from Egypt, from the midst of the iron furnace), | 51For they are Your people and Your inheritance; You brought them out of Egypt, out of the middle of an iron furnace. |
| 52that Your eyes may be open to the supplication of Your servant and to the supplication of Your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they call to You. | 52May Your eyes be open to Your servant's petition and to the petition of Your people Israel, listening to them whenever they call to You. |
| 53"For You have separated them from all the peoples of the earth as Your inheritance, as You spoke through Moses Your servant, when You brought our fathers forth from Egypt, O Lord GOD." | 53For You, Lord GOD, have set them apart as Your inheritance from all the people on earth, as You spoke through Your servant Moses when You brought their ancestors out of Egypt. |
| 54When Solomon had finished praying this entire prayer and supplication to the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread toward heaven. | 54When Solomon finished praying this entire prayer and petition to the LORD, he got up from kneeling before the altar of the LORD, with his hands spread out toward heaven, |
| 55And he stood and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying: | 55and he stood and blessed the whole congregation of Israel with a loud voice: " |
| 56"Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised; not one word has failed of all His good promise, which He promised through Moses His servant. | 56May the LORD be praised! He has given rest to His people Israel according to all He has said. Not one of all the good promises He made through His servant Moses has failed. |
| 57"May the LORD our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; may He not leave us or forsake us, | 57May the LORD our God be with us as He was with our ancestors. May He not abandon us or leave us |
| 58that He may incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, which He commanded our fathers. | 58so that He causes us to be devoted to Him, to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commands, statutes, and ordinances, which He commanded our ancestors. |
| 59"And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, that He may maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day requires, | 59May my words I have made my petition with before the LORD be near the LORD our God day and night, so that He may uphold His servant's cause and the cause of His people Israel, as each day requires, |
| 60so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no one else. | 60and so that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh is God. There is no other! |
| 61"Let your heart therefore be wholly devoted to the LORD our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day." | 61Let your heart be completely devoted to the LORD our God to walk in His statutes and to keep His commands, as it is today." |
| 62Now the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifice before the LORD. | 62The king and all Israel with him were offering sacrifices in the LORD's presence. |
| 63Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to the LORD, 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep. So the king and all the sons of Israel dedicated the house of the LORD. | 63Solomon offered a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to the LORD: 22,000 cattle and 120,000 sheep. In this manner the king and all the Israelites dedicated the LORD's temple. |
| 64On the same day the king consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD, because there he offered the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat of the peace offerings; for the bronze altar that was before the LORD was too small to hold the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat of the peace offerings. | 64On the same day, the king consecrated the middle of the courtyard that was in front of the LORD's temple because that was where he offered the burnt offering, the grain offering, and the fat of the fellowship offerings since the bronze altar before the LORD was too small to accommodate the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the fellowship offerings. |
| 65So Solomon observed the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of Egypt, before the LORD our God, for seven days and seven more days, even fourteen days. | 65Solomon and all Israel with him--a great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath to the Brook of Egypt--observed the festival at that time in the presence of the LORD our God, seven days, and seven more days--14 days. |
| 66On the eighth day he sent the people away and they blessed the king. Then they went to their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the LORD had shown to David His servant and to Israel His people. | 66On the fifteenth day he sent the people away. So they blessed the king and went home to their tents rejoicing and with joyful hearts for all the goodness that the LORD had done for His servant David and for His people Israel. |
