Brethren, my heart's desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. | 1Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation! |
For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. | 2I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. |
For not knowing about God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. | 3Because they disregarded the righteousness from God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted themselves to God's righteousness. |
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. | 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. |
For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness. | 5For Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them. |
But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: "DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, 'WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?' (that is, to bring Christ down), | 6But the righteousness that comes from faith speaks like this: Do not say in your heart, "Who will go up to heaven?" that is, to bring Christ down |
or 'WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)." | 7or, "Who will go down into the abyss?" that is, to bring Christ up from the dead. |
But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART "-- that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, | 8On the contrary, what does it say? The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. This is the message of faith that we proclaim: |
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; | 9If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. |
for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. | 10One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. |
For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." | 11Now the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on Him will not be put to shame, |
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; | 12for there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, since the same Lord of all is rich to all who call on Him. |
for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." | 13For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. |
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? | 14But how can they call on Him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about Him? And how can they hear without a preacher? |
How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!" | 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who announce the gospel of good things! |
However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?" | 16But all did not obey the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message? |
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. | 17So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ. |
But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; "THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH, AND THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD." | 18But I ask, "Did they not hear?" Yes, they did: Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world. |
But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, "I WILL MAKE YOU JEALOUS BY THAT WHICH IS NOT A NATION, BY A NATION WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WILL I ANGER YOU." | 19But I ask, "Did Israel not understand?" First, Moses said: I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that lacks understanding. |
And Isaiah is very bold and says, "I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME, I BECAME MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME." | 20And Isaiah says boldly: I was found by those who were not looking for Me; I revealed Myself to those who were not asking for Me. |
But as for Israel He says, "ALL THE DAY LONG I HAVE STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS TO A DISOBEDIENT AND OBSTINATE PEOPLE." | 21But to Israel he says: All day long I have spread out My hands to a disobedient and defiant people. |
