When it was early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to execute him.1When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.
They tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor. 2After tying Him up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate, the governor.
Now when Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus had been condemned, he regretted what he had done and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders,3Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders."
saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood!" But they said, "What is that to us? You take care of it yourself!"4I have sinned by betraying innocent blood," he said." What's that to us?" they said. "See to it yourself!"
So Judas threw the silver coins into the temple and left. Then he went out and hanged himself.5So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.
The chief priests took the silver and said, "It is not lawful to put this into the temple treasury, since it is blood money."6The chief priests took the silver and said, "It's not lawful to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money."
After consulting together they bought the Potter's Field with it, as a burial place for foreigners.7So they conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners.
For this reason that field has been called the "Field of Blood" to this day.8Therefore that field has been called "Blood Field" to this day.
Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price of the one whose price had been set by the people of Israel,9Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took the 30 pieces of silver, the price of Him whose price was set by the Israelites,
and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me." 10and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.
Then Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus said, "You say so."11Now Jesus stood before the governor. "Are You the King of the Jews?" the governor asked Him. Jesus answered, "You have said it."
But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not respond.12And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He didn't answer.
Then Pilate said to him, "Don't you hear how many charges they are bringing against you?"13Then Pilate said to Him, "Don't You hear how much they are testifying against You?"
But he did not answer even one accusation, so that the governor was quite amazed. 14But He didn't answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
During the feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whomever they wanted.15At the festival the governor's custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted.
At that time they had in custody a notorious prisoner named Jesus Barabbas.16At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
So after they had assembled, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Christ?"17So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Who is it you want me to release for you--Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Messiah?"
(For he knew that they had handed him over because of envy.)18For he knew they had handed Him over because of envy.
As he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message to him: "Have nothing to do with that innocent man; I have suffered greatly as a result of a dream about him today."19While he was sitting on the judge's bench, his wife sent word to him, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I've suffered terribly in a dream because of Him!"
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed.20The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus.
The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas!"21The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?"" Barabbas!" they answered.
Pilate said to them, "Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Christ?" They all said, "Crucify him!"22Pilate asked them, "What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Messiah?" They all answered, "Crucify Him!"
He asked, "Why? What wrong has he done?" But they shouted more insistently, "Crucify him!" 23Then he said, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they kept shouting, "Crucify Him!" all the more.
When Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but that instead a riot was starting, he took some water, washed his hands before the crowd and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood. You take care of it yourselves!"24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, "I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves!"
In reply all the people said, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"25All the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!"
Then he released Barabbas for them. But after he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.26Then he released Barabbas to them. But after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's residence and gathered the whole cohort around him.27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into headquarters and gathered the whole company around Him.
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe around him,28They stripped Him and dressed Him in a scarlet military robe.
and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, and kneeling down before him, they mocked him: "Hail, king of the Jews!"29They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and placed a reed in His right hand. And they knelt down before Him and mocked Him: "Hail, King of the Jews!"
They spat on him and took the staff and struck him repeatedly on the head.30Then they spit on Him, took the reed, and kept hitting Him on the head.
When they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. 31When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
As they were going out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced to carry his cross.32As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced this man to carry His cross.
They came to a place called Golgotha (which means "Place of the Skull")33When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place),
and offered Jesus wine mixed with gall to drink. But after tasting it, he would not drink it.34they gave Him wine mixed with gall to drink. But when He tasted it, He would not drink it.
When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by throwing dice.35After crucifying Him they divided His clothes by casting lots.
Then they sat down and kept guard over him there.36Then they sat down and were guarding Him there.
Above his head they put the charge against him, which read: "This is Jesus, the king of the Jews."37Above His head they put up the charge against Him in writing: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Then two outlaws were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.38Then two criminals were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.
Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads39Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their heads
and saying, "You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are God's Son, come down from the cross!"40and saying, "The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"
In the same way even the chief priests--together with the experts in the law and elders--were mocking him:41In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him and said, "
"He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the king of Israel! If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in him!42He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
H e trusts in God--let God, if he wants to, deliver him now because he said, 'I am God's Son'!"43He has put His trust in God; let God rescue Him now--if He wants Him! For He said, 'I am God's Son.'"
The robbers who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him. 44In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with Him kept taunting Him.
Now from noon until three, darkness came over all the land.45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over the whole land.
At about three o'clock Jesus shouted with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, "This man is calling for Elijah."47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling for Elijah!"
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink.48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, and offered Him a drink.
But the rest said, "Leave him alone! Let's see if Elijah will come to save him."49But the rest said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to save Him!"
Then Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.50Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.
Just then the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks were split apart.51Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked and the rocks were split.
And tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had died were raised.52The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
(They came out of the tombs after his resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.)53And they came out of the tombs after His resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
Now when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said, "Truly this one was God's Son!"54When the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "This man really was God's Son!"
Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and given him support were also there, watching from a distance.55Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and ministered to Him were there, looking on from a distance.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. 56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
Now when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus.57When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered that it be given to him.58He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Then Pilate ordered that it be released.
Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,59So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen,
and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut in the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away.60and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.
(Now Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there, opposite the tomb.) 61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.
The next day (which is after the day of preparation) the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate62The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
and said, "Sir, we remember that while that deceiver was still alive he said, 'After three days I will rise again.'63and said, "Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive He said, After three days I will rise again.'
So give orders to secure the tomb until the third day. Otherwise his disciples may come and steal his body and say to the people, 'He has been raised from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first."64Therefore give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come, steal Him, and tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' Then the last deception will be worse than the first.""
Pilate said to them, "Take a guard of soldiers. Go and make it as secure as you can."65You have a guard of soldiers," Pilate told them. "Go and make it as secure as you know how."
So they went with the soldiers of the guard and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone. 66Then they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard.
