In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.2Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
He went into all the region around the Jordan River, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 3And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one shouting in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight. 4As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low, and the crooked will be made straight, and the rough ways will be made smooth, 5Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
and all humanity will see the salvation of God.'" 6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
So John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?7Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Therefore produce fruit that proves your repentance, and don't begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!8Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire." 9And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
So the crowds were asking him, "What then should we do?"10And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
John answered them, "The person who has two tunics must share with the person who has none, and the person who has food must do likewise."11He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"12Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
He told them, "Collect no more than you are required to."13And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
Then some soldiers also asked him, "And as for us--what should we do?" He told them, "Take money from no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your pay." 14And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ,15And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
John answered them all, "I baptize you with water, but one more powerful than I am is coming--I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
His winnowing fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire." 17Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
And in this way, with many other exhortations, John proclaimed good news to the people.18And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the evil deeds that he had done,19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison. 20Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. And while he was praying, the heavens opened,21Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight." 22And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
