Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. | 1So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes. |
And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, | 2When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. |
who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, | 3This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. |
because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. | 4Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. |
And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. | 5Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones. |
When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. | 6When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. |
And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.” | 7With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!” |
For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” | 8For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.” |
Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” | 9Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” |
Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. | 10Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. |
Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. | 11There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. |
So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” | 12“Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.” |
And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea. | 13So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. |
So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. | 14The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. |
Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. | 15A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. |
And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. | 16Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. |
Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region. | 17And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone. |
And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. | 18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. |
However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” | 19But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” |
And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled. | 20So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them. Jesus Heals in Response to Faith |
Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. | 21Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. |
And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet | 22Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, |
and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.” | 23pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” |
So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him. | 24Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. |
Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, | 25A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. |
and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. | 26She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. |
When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. | 27She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. |
For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” | 28For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” |
Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. | 29Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. |
And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?” | 30Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” |
But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” | 31His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” |
And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. | 32But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. |
But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. | 33Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. |
And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.” | 34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” |
While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” | 35While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” |
As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” | 36But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” |
And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. | 37Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn’t let anyone go with him except Peter, James, and John (the brother of James). |
Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. | 38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. |
When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.” | 39He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” |
And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. | 40The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. |
Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” | 41Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” |
Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. | 42And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed. |
But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat. | 43Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them to give her something to eat. |
