1Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.

1Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!

2Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.

2Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!

3Exult in his holy name; rejoice, you who worship the LORD.

3Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice!

4Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him.

4Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!

5Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given,

5Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,

6you children of his servant Abraham, you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.

6O offspring of Abraham, his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

7He is the LORD our God. His justice is seen throughout the land.

7He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.

8He always stands by his covenant— the commitment he made to a thousand generations.

8He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,

9This is the covenant he made with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac.

9the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac,

10He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant:

10which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,

11“I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession.”

11saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”

12He said this when they were few in number, a tiny group of strangers in Canaan.

12When they were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it,

13They wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.

13wandering from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people,

14Yet he did not let anyone oppress them. He warned kings on their behalf:

14he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account,

15“Do not touch my chosen people, and do not hurt my prophets.”

15saying, “Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!”

16He called for a famine on the land of Canaan, cutting off its food supply.

16When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread,

17Then he sent someone to Egypt ahead of them— Joseph, who was sold as a slave.

17he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.

18They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar.

18His feet were hurt with fetters; his neck was put in a collar of iron;

19Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the LORD tested Joseph’s character.

19until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him.

20Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free; the ruler of the nation opened his prison door.

20The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free;

21Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household; he became ruler over all the king’s possessions.

21he made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions,

22He could instruct the king’s aides as he pleased and teach the king’s advisers.

22to bind his princes at his pleasure and to teach his elders wisdom.

23Then Israel arrived in Egypt; Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham.

23Then Israel came to Egypt; Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

24And the LORD multiplied the people of Israel until they became too mighty for their enemies.

24And the LORD made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their foes.

25Then he turned the Egyptians against the Israelites, and they plotted against the LORD’s servants.

25He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants.

26But the LORD sent his servant Moses, along with Aaron, whom he had chosen.

26He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen.

27They performed miraculous signs among the Egyptians, and wonders in the land of Ham.

27They performed his signs among them and miracles in the land of Ham.

28The LORD blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go.

28He sent darkness, and made the land dark; they did not rebel against his words.

29He turned their water into blood, poisoning all the fish.

29He turned their waters into blood and caused their fish to die.

30Then frogs overran the land and even invaded the king’s bedrooms.

30Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings.

31When the LORD spoke, flies descended on the Egyptians, and gnats swarmed across Egypt.

31He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country.

32He sent them hail instead of rain, and lightning flashed over the land.

32He gave them hail for rain, and fiery lightning bolts through their land.

33He ruined their grapevines and fig trees and shattered all the trees.

33He struck down their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country.

34He spoke, and hordes of locusts came— young locusts beyond number.

34He spoke, and the locusts came, young locusts without number,

35They ate up everything green in the land, destroying all the crops in their fields.

35which devoured all the vegetation in their land and ate up the fruit of their ground.

36Then he killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home, the pride and joy of each family.

36He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their strength.

37The LORD brought his people out of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold; and not one among the tribes of Israel even stumbled.

37Then he brought out Israel with silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.

38Egypt was glad when they were gone, for they feared them greatly.

38Egypt was glad when they departed, for dread of them had fallen upon it.

39The LORD spread a cloud above them as a covering and gave them a great fire to light the darkness.

39He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.

40They asked for meat, and he sent them quail; he satisfied their hunger with manna—bread from heaven.

40They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance.

41He split open a rock, and water gushed out to form a river through the dry wasteland.

41He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river.

42For he remembered his sacred promise to his servant Abraham.

43So he brought his people out of Egypt with joy, his chosen ones with rejoicing.

43So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing.

44He gave his people the lands of pagan nations, and they harvested crops that others had planted.

44And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,

45All this happened so they would follow his decrees and obey his instructions. Praise the LORD!

45that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the LORD!
