Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.1Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.2And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
“Hail! King of the Jews!” they mocked, as they slapped him across the face.3And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
Pilate went outside again and said to the people, “I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty.”4Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, “Look, here is the man!”5Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “Take him yourselves and crucify him,” Pilate said. “I find him not guilty.”6When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.”7The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.8When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer.9And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
“Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?”10Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”11Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.”12And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha ).13When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, “Look, here is your king!”14And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
“Away with him,” they yelled. “Away with him! Crucify him!” “What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back.15But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. The Crucifixion So they took Jesus away.16Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha ).17And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.18Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”19And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, “Change it from ‘The King of the Jews’ to ‘He said, I am King of the Jews.’”21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
Pilate replied, “No, what I have written, I have written.”22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.23Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.” So that is what they did.24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.”26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. The Death of Jesus27Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.31The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.32Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn’t break his legs.33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
(This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also may continue to believe. )35And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, “Not one of his bones will be broken,”36For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
and “They will look on the one they pierced.” The Burial of Jesus37And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.38And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.39And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.40Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.42There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
